Nocturnal Radiant Cooling Experiment by a Plate Viewing the Sky (야간 하늘에 노출된 평판의 복사냉각 실험)

  • The purpose of this experiment is to study the radiant cooling effects by a plate directly viewing the nighttime sky. The measurements are performed on a rooftop of the Engineering building at the Dongguk University in Seoul during the month of August in 2004. The radiant cooling effects are compared using three different types of plate sufaces, namely, galvanized iron, black painted, and aluminum film coated galvanized iron plate. Among these plates, the black Painted surface showed the lowest temperature that is lower than the ambient temperature. The maximum radiant cooling temperature difference, which is ambient temperature minus plate temperature, observed is about 5 K.

  • Numerical investigation on dynamic characteristics of sandwich plates under periodic and thermal loads has been presented by assuming that the plate has three layers which are a foam core and two skins. The foam core made of Aluminum has porosities with uniform and graded dispersions. The sandwich plate has been supposed to be affected by periodical compressive loads. Also, temperature variation causes uniform thermal load. The formulation has been established based upon a higher-order plate theory and Ritz method has been used to solve the equations of motion. The stability boundaries have also been obtained performing Bolotin's method. It will be indicated that stability boundaries of the sandwich plate depend on periodical load parameters, porosities, skin thickness and temperature.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the preliminary thermal performance of a plastic coated aluminum material(PCAM) plate heat exchanger. Plastic coating which has high corrosion resistivity and thermal conductivity can overcome corrosive weakness of aluminum material. The heat exchangers are modeled for STS316, Titanium and PCAM materials, and analyzed numerically using HTRI and ANSYS Fluent CFD softwares. The results show that PCAM heat exchanger is superior in heat transfer performance compared to existing materials. For chevron angle of $60^{\circ}$, thermal performances of Titanium and PCAM are higher by 12.2% and 48.9% when compared to STS316, respectively.

Fatigue Life Prediction of Composite Patch for Edge Cracked Aluminum Plate (모서리균열이 있는 알루미늄판의 복합재 패치보수시 수명예측 연구)

  • One of the hot issues in composite patching is to reduce the thermal residual stresses between composite patch and aluminum surface which occurs after bonding of composite patch. In this study, the edge crack patching is adopted for different curing cycles. For the analysis, three layer Mindlin plate elements are used, and Paris' law is adopted to predict the fatigue life of composite patch plate. The analysis results show a good agreement with the experimental fatigue life and this technique can be applied for the prediction of fatigue life of aircraft structures.

  • 하나로 핵연료의 피복관과 봉단마개 재료로 사용되는 Aluminum 1060의 전자빔 용접부의 비드 특성을 조사하기 위하여 bead-on-plate 용접을 하였다. 비드의 단면을 절단하여 가속전압, 빔 전류, 용접속도에 따른 비드의 폭과 용입 깊이의 변화를 측정하고 용접부에 발생한 용접결함을 관찰하였다. 실험결과 가속전압과 범 전류의 증가에 따라 용입 깊이는 직선 비례적으로 계속 증가하였지만 비드폭은 그 증가율이 감소하는 경향이었다. 용접속도의 증가에 따라서 비드 폭과 용입깊이는 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 또한 범 출력이 높은 용접부의 root부에 다수의 porosity 가 발생하는 것을 관찰 할 수 있었으며 핵연료 봉단 마개의 porosity와는 다른 것을 확인하였다.

  • In this study, semi-solid thin plate of A 356 aluminum alloy was fabricated by using slope plate apparatus and vacuum pressurization. Slope plate was used to produce semi-solid material with spheroidal microstructures. After molten metal was poured into the slope plate connected to the pouring hole of die, semi-solid material flowed into the die cavity by vacuum degree. The primary crystals of the cast metal became spheroidal. In order to increase the working pressure, gas pressurization of U shape was designed for fabrication of thin plate. For 3 bar of gas pressure and 60 mmHg of vacuum degree, thin plate was fabricated without defects on surface.

  • Composite honeycomb sandwich plate is light and strong. It is easy to produce. It began to be applied to the bodyshell of rolling stock. Generally, weight saving amounts to 27%. However, the material cost of it is much higher than that of aluminum extrusion profile, which prevents popular use of it for bodyshell. In this paper, manufacturing processes of two light materials were compared to investigate cost impact. After cost breakdown was defined, economics of two materials was analyzed using the previous cost data. Easy production of composite bodyshell could compensate for higher material cost. Mass production of composite bodyshell can make the equipment cost lower for the composite bodyshell so that it may have strong competitiveness to the aluminum bodyshell. Operational energy saving due to weight reduction was also presented referring to the actual statistical data in a metro line.

  • In the extrusion process, the working material is forced to flow through a die with the desired profile. In general, the width of an extruded section is limited to about an inch less than the diameter of the round billet. But through the lip die, material is spreaded to produce a wider extruded section than the diameter of round billet. In this study, the extrusion process of an aluminum plate using the lip die is investigated. The width of the extruded plate is 450mm that is formed from the round billet with a diameter of 250mm. The flow characteristic through the lip die is considered to produce the wide-extruded plate with a small billet using rigid plastic FE analysis. Based on the result of FE analysis, new designs of lip die are proposed.

  • In this work, we propose a new ultrasonic damage inspection method in plate structures. The proposed method employs an OPMT(orientation-adjustable patch-type magnetostrictive transducer) in order to make the ultrasonic waves directed to a specific target point. For experiments, virtual grid points were set up at every 50 mm in an aluminum plate and two OPMTs were used for inspection. If there exists a crack in a plate, the reflected Lamb wave from the crack is measured in addition to the direct waves from the transmitting transducer to the receiving transducer.

  • Buckling behavior was studied for the square plate with bead and hole under shear load. Plates were made to examine the effect of bead and hole to the material, aluminum and composite, the effect of flange angle, bead height and bead radius of curvature. There was little difference between buckling loads obtained by the experiment and Rayleigh-Ritz method to the plate. Buckling load could be increased highly when stress concentration to the hole was dispersed effectively using flange. A well-designed plate using bead and flange showed 3 times as much as stiffness to the plate without bead and flange.
