  • Background The erbium:yttrium scandium gallium garnet (Er:YSGG) laser differs from other laser techniques by having a faster and higher cure rate. Since the Er:YSGG laser causes an appropriate proportion of ablation and coagulation, it has advantages over the conventional carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) laser and the erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser, including heating tendencies and explosive vaporization. This research was conducted to explore the effects and safety of the Er:YSGG laser. Methods Twenty patients participated in the pilot study of a resurfacing system using a 2,790-nm Er:YSGG laser. All patients received facial treatment by the 2,790-nm Er:YSGG laser system (Cutera) twice with a 4-week interval. Wrinkle reduction, reduction in pigment inhomogeneity, and improvement in tone and texture were measured. Results Study subjects included 15 women and five men. Re-epithelization occurred in all subjects 3 to 4 days after treatment, and wrinkle reduction, reduction in pigment inhomogeneity, and improvement in tone and texture within 6 months of treatment. Conclusions The 2,790-nm YSGG laser technique had fewer complications and was effective in the improvement of scars, pores, wrinkles, and skin tone and color with one or two treatments. We expect this method to be effective for people with acne scars, pore scars, deep wrinkles, and uneven skin texture and color.

  • In the past, making IR photography needed somewhat complicated process, so its application fields were limited. However, it has become easy to make IR photography with advanced digital technology, so it is expected that the fields of IR photography and existing limit due to difficult making process will be expanded. Therefore, in this study, it is decided that the need of IR standard chart which allows us to manage exposure and tone of IR photography for scientific purpose will increase. Two methods were used to make IR standard chart. First method is to use aluminum. When aluminum has oxide coating through anodic oxidation, it has high durability, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Also, IR reflectance of aluminum can be controlled in some degree depending on the thickness of oxide coating. Second method is to use pigments. Yellow 10P150 pigment is used for the brightest patch. This pigment is appropriate in this study due to high heat resistance and IR reflectance. Carbon black is used for the darkest patch. Carbon black absorbs much IR, and its color is not faded by any source of light. IR reflectance is adjusted elaborately by mixing two pigments. Finally, 6 patches are selected with consideration for actual IR reflectance of patches. As a result, IR reflectance of random subjects can be known approximately and IR photographs can have appropriate contrast with the IR standard chart.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare two different gingival depigmentation techniques using an erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser and rotary instruments. Methods: Two patients with melanin pigmentation of gingiva were treated with different gingival depigmentation techniques. Ablation of the gingiva by Er:YAG laser was performed on the right side, and abrasion with a rotary round bur on the opposite side. Results: The patients were satisfied with the esthetically significant improvement with each method. However, some pigment still remained on the marginal gingival and papilla. The visual analog scale did not yield much difference between the two methods, with slightly more pain on the Er:YAG laser treated site. Conclusions: The results of these cases suggest that ablation of the gingiva by an Er:YAG laser and abrasion with a rotary round bur is good enough to achieve esthetic satisfaction and fair wound healing without infection or severe pain. Prudent care about the gingival condition, such as the gingival thickness and degree of pigmentation along with appropriate assessment is needed in ablation by the Er:YAG laser procedure.

  • Identification of paint on victim's clothing and a vehicle are valuable for forensic examination when investigating hit-and-run accidents. Automotive paints on clothes are used to prove a victim caused by traffic accident and to identify a suspected vehicle. The comparison of transferred paints between victim's vehicle and suspected vehicle can be an important evidence in reconstructing the accident situation and in discovering the truth. The paints such as white, yellow, red, blue, or black are hard to examine particle shape under a stereomicroscope because of it is not included aluminum, pearl, and mica flakes in the pigments. The aim of this study under forensic aspect is to compare pigment among basecoat layers of solid paints by identifying inorganic elemental compositions and binder resins of pigments using by micro-FT-IR and micro-XRF spectrometer. The pigment samples were analyzed by using two methods of FT-IR: Reflectance and ATR method. Two methods of FT-IR were useful in discriminating binder resins of pigments by comparing characteristic peaks and patterns of spectra. Also, XRF spectrometer could identify the elemental compositions in inorganic pigments of trace paints which are difficult to compare the identification by FT-IR.

  • Titania is usually used in sun-screens, tooth paste, and other daily used objects as a pigment. However, scientists have focused on titania as photocatalyst due to its excellent activities. By fabricating vanadium doped TiO2 and CuOx co-catalyzed TiO2 nano-size filter, the degradation level of the volatile organic compound (VOC) concentration was tested using 365nm UV LED as light source in a closed chamber. Main purpose for this test is to evaluate the activities of various catalysts for degrading the VOCs which are detrimental to human body and toluene and p-xylene were chosen in the VOC removal test. Target gas materials were injected into the test chamber with dry air as carrier gas which was flowed into the gas washer bottle filled with liquid form of VOC substance. When the VOC gas flows into the chamber, it is circulated by 200 mm fan in order to contact with the set-up filter on the aluminum holder. Target gas concentration in the chamber was monitored using VOC detector (miniRae3000, Raesystems) which was also placed inside the chamber. With the measured concentration, the VOC degradation efficiency and the degradation rate were evaluated and used to compare the catalytic activities.

  • To promote the consumption of mulberry fruit, we manufactured mulberry fruit wine with 'simheung' by different processing methods and analyzed cyanidin-3-glucoside(C3G) stability and antioxidant capacity. In the processing of mulberry fruit alcoholic drink, 3 minutes blanching using microwave inhibited the C3G destruction by maintaining the antioxidant capacity and inactivation of enzymes related to pigment's stability. And freeze-dried mulberry fruit was the highest C3G pigment content and antioxidant capacity. Nevertheless, this is not recommended because the economic burden of the cost of freeze-drying. In conclusion, when processing mulberry fruit wine, the addition of citric acid and the enzyme's inactivation treatment were considered more effective than storage containers (transparent glass, brown glass bottles, aluminum foil, green glass, translucent glass bottles).

  • As mulberry fruit's functionalities are known to the media, the interest in promoting of consumption and processed products is increasing. But there is no C3G(Cyanidin-3-glucoside) data based on the stability of the pigment during processing. To solve this problems, and to expand the use of mulberry fruit, processing methods was developed for mulberry fruit juice improved cyanidin-3-glucoside(C3G) stability. The results obtained are summarized as follows. The food additive citric acid with 0.3 % improved C3G content and antioxidant ability in the treatment of mulberry fruit and sucrose the ratio of 50 % : 50 %(w/w). In the case of the addition of oligosaccharides, citric acid decreased antioxidant ability. Xylitol treatment showed up the lowest of C3 content, but by the addition of citric acid improved the pigment content and antioxidant activity of the mulberry fruit juice. Addition of citric acid was more affected C3G stability than containers (clear glass bottles, brown glass bottles, aluminum foil, green glass bottle, translucent glass bottles). In the processing of mulberry juice, 3 minutes blanching treatment using microwave dropped C3G content somewhat. Therefore, using this method is not recommended. However in the antioxidant ability, microwave blanching showed a stabilizing effect compared to the other treatments.

  • Recently Digital TV industry has drastically been moving the illuminating system, which causes an obvious product change from PDP and LCD to LED model to provide high-definition image. Due to strong competition in the digital industry, TV manufacturers make a great efforts to reduce production cost by using low-priced materials such as steels instead of aluminum and plastic etc. In this paper we have developed a new low-priced electrogalvanized steel sheet, which has a black resin composite layer, to substitute conventional high-priced PCM steel and plastic mold for rear cover panel in the digital TV. The black resin composite was prepared by mechanical dispersion of the mixture solution that consists of high solid polyester resin, melamine hardener, black pigment, micronized silica paste, polyacrylate texturing particle and miscellaneous additives. The composite solution was coated on the steel sheet using roll coater followed by induction furnace curing and cooling. Although the coated layer has a half thickness compared to the conventional PCM steels having $23{\mu}m$ thickness, it exhibits excellent quality for the usage of rear cover panel. The new steel sheet was applied to test products to get quality certification from worldwide electronic appliance customers. Detailed discussion provides in this paper including preparation of composite solution, roll coating technology, induction curing technology and quality evaluation from customers.

  • Creeping bentgrass (Agrosis stolonifera L.) is regarded to be the most widely used cool-season turf grass species grown on golf greens and fairways in temperate climates of North America. Creeping bentgrass is highly susceptible to the fungal disease 'dollar spot' caused by Sclerotinia homoeocarpa. Dollar spot is a foliar disease favored by conditions of high humidity, warm days, and cool nights. Studies using Aliette Signature (Fosetyl Aluminum formulated with a green pigment) mixed with another broad-spectrum fungicide do not always provide additional visual quality benefits compared to the fungicide alone. The exact mechanism for improved summer visual quality, when it occurs, is not known. Fertility management and environment likely contribute. The object of this study is to evaluate fungicide strategies for control of dollar spot and effect on visual quality during summer and on an L-93/G-2 creeping bentgrass green. Nine fungicide combinations were used for this study. Disease control and visual quality by fungicides was evaluated on an established G-2/L-93 creeping bentgrass green at 3-hole Sunshine Golf Course in Lemont, IL. All fungicide combination showed excellent dollar spot suppression except Fore throughout the study. Visual quality of greens by addition of Aliette Signature is enhanced when bentgrass growth is compromised and slow. Dollar spot levels in Fore plots increased to 30% on 14 August, and was no different than untreated plots. Unacceptable quality by Fore was due to lack of dollar spot control.

  • This study references preceding studies to examine the history of paint application techniques using various paints in the past, with the aim to contribute to the long-term preservation of large military cultural heritage assets situated outdoors. To this end, the study compared the findings of preceding research with the findings of an analysis conducted on a H-13 helicopter housed at the War Memorial of Korea. Upon collecting and analyzing samples from three grounded WWII aircraft from above-ground by preceding studies, it was confirmed from each sample that the various chemical properties of chrome ensured the effectiveness of the protective coating. The compound was first tested as a corrosion-inhibiting pigment in the early 1940s and proved its excellent moisture-resistant properties over the course of 80 years, despite the deterioration of the paint layer and long-term exposure to the natural environment. For this reason, it has been widely used as a corrosion inhibitor for aluminum alloys in the aviation industry. In other word, the most widely-used material for preventing corrosion was an organic primer containing chromate. In this study, based on the paint analysis of a H-13 helicopter operated in the Korean War, it was shown that the second layer, consisting of the primer, contains chromium oxide (Cr2O3). In addition, it was estimated that red lead tetraoxide (Pb3O4) was used for the vehicle. Analysis results and data from previous studies can help to confirm the continued effectiveness of corrosion prevention function provided by chromate. Meanwhile, the result of infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the use of alkyd resin. In the future, comparisons with a more diverse range of artifacts will allow the identification of changes in the manufacturing technology of paints used to protect alloys from corrosion.
