Improving of Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum Alloys by Removing Intermetallic Compound

  • It is well known that iron is one of the most common impurity elements found in aluminum and its alloys. Iron in the aluminum forms an intermetallic compounds such as $FeAl_3$. The $FeAl_3$ particles on the aluminum surface are one of the most detrimental phases to the corrosion process and anodizing procedure for aluminum and its alloys. Trial and error surface treatment will be carried out to find the preferential and effective removal of $FeAl_3$ particles on the surfaces without dissolution of aluminum matrix around the particles. One of the preferable surface treatments for the aim of getting $FeAl_3$ free surface was an electrochemical treatment such as cathodic current density of $-2kAm^{-2}$ in a 20-30 mass% $HNO_3$ solution for the period of 300s. The corrosion characteristics of aluminum surface with $FeAl_3$ free particles are examined in a $0.1kmol/m^3$ NaCl solution. It is found that aluminum with free $FeAl_3$ particles shows higher corrosion resistance than aluminum with $FeAl_3$ particles.

  • 금속 연료로 사용되는 마이크로/나노 알루미늄 입자를 산화피막에 의한 점화 지연을 최소화 하는 점화 방법을 제시 하였다. 알루미늄 입자를 생성시킴과 동시에 가열하여 입자가 생성된 직후 산소와 접촉시 격렬한 산화 반응을 유도하여 점화를 시키는 방법이다. 1064 nm 파장의 Nd:YAG 펄스 레이저를 이용한 레이저 삭마(laser ablation)를 알루미늄 시편에 발생시켜 입자를 생성하였으며, 산란 기법(scattering method)을 이용하여 입자를 가시화하여 생성을 확인하였다. 10.6 ${\mu}m$ 파장의 $CO_2$ 연속 레이저를 사용하여 알루미늄 시편을 가열하고 생성된 입자의 점화 열원으로 사용하여 알루미늄 입자가 점화되고 연소되어 이동하는 궤적을 확인하였다.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ni3Al Matrix Composites with Fine Aluminum Oxide by PM Method

  • Intermetallic compound matrix composites have been expected to be established as high temperature structural components. $Ni_3Al$ is a representative intermetallic alloy, which has excellent ductility even at room temperature by adding certain alloying elements. $Ni_3Al$ matrix composites with aluminum oxide particles, which are formed by the in-situ reaction between the alloy and aluminum borate whiskers, are fabricated by a powder metallurgical method. The addition of aluminum borate whiskers disperses the synthetic aluminum oxide particles during sintering and dramatically increases the strength of the composite. The uniform dispersion of reaction synthesized aluminum oxide particles and the uniform solution of boron in the matrix seem to play an important role in the improvement in strength. There is a dramatic increase in strength with the addition of the whisker, and the maximum value is obtained at a 10 vol% addition of whisker. The $Ni_3Al$ composite with 10 vol% aluminum oxide particles $0.3{\mu}m$ in size and with 0.1 wt% boron powder fabricated by the conventional powder metallurgical process does not have such high strength because of inhomogeneous distribution of aluminum oxide particles and of boron. The tensile strength of the $Ni_3Al$ with a 10 vol% aluminum borate whisker reaches more than twice the value, 930 MPa, of the parent alloy. No third phase is observed between the aluminum oxide and the matrix.

  • The ignition and the burning characteristics of aluminum and magnesium particles ($30-110{\mu}m$ in diameter) isolated due to electrodynamic levitation were experimentally investigated. The burning time, the ignition delay time, the flame temperature, and the flame diameter were measured. The thermal radiation intensity was measured using the photomultiplier tube and the combustion history was monitored by high-speed cinematography. Two-wavelength pyrometry measured the temperature of the burning particles. The burning times of aluminum particles were measured approximately 5 to 8 times longer than those of magnesium particles. Exponents of $D^n$-law, for the burning rate of magnesium and aluminum particles of diameters less than $110{\mu}m$, are found to be 0.6 and 1.5, respectively. The instant of aluminum ignition is clearly distinguished with the ignition delay time little less than 10 ms, however the burning history of magnesium particle exhibits no distinct instant of the ignition. The ignition delay time of magnesium particle (less than $110{\mu}m$) were approximately shown in the range from 50 to 200 ns. The flame temperatures of single metal particles are lower than the boiling point of the oxide. The nondimensional flame diameters for magnesium are decreased with increasing of the diameter. The nondimensional flame diameters for aluminum are not changed significantly.

  • The ignition of aluminum particles under high pressure and temperature conditions is studied. The laser ablation method is used to generate aluminum particles exposed to pressures ranging between 0.35 and 2.2 GPa. A continuous wave $CO_2$ laser is then used to heat surface of the aluminum target until ignition is achieved. We confirm ignition by a spectroscopic analysis of AlO vibronic band of 484 nm wavelength. The radiant temperature is measured with respect to various pressures for tracing of required heating energy for ignition. Then the ignition temperature is deduced from the radiant temperature using the thermal diffusion equation. The established ignition criteria for corresponding temperature and pressure can be used in the modeling of detonation behavior of heavily aluminized high explosives or solid propellants.

  • Aluminum alloy(AC8A) matrix composites reinforced with SiC particles(10% in vol.) were fabricated by Centrifugal Spray Deposition(CSD) process. The microstructures were investigated in order to evaluate both the mixing mode between aluminum matrix and SiC particles, and the effect of SiC particles on the cooling behaviours of droplets during flight and preforms deposited. A non-continuum mathematical calculation was performed to explain and to quantify the evolution of microstructures in the droplets and preforms deposited. Conclusions obtained are as follows; 1. The powders produced by CSD process showed, in general, ligament type, and more than 60% of the powders produced were about 300 to 850 um in size. 2. AC8A droplets solidified during flight showed fine dendritic structure, but AC8A droplets mixed with SiC particles showed fine equiaxed grain structure, and eutectic silicon were formed to crystallize granularly between fine aluminum grains. 3. SiC particles seem to act as a nucleation sites for pro-eutectic silicon during solidification of AC8A alloy. 4. The microstructure of composite powders formed by CSD process showed particle embedded type, and resulted in dispersed type microstructure in preforms deposited. 5. The pro-eutectic silicon crystallized granularly between fine aluminum grains seem to prohibit grains from growth during spray deposition process. 6. The interfacial reactions between aluminum matrix and SiC particles were not observed from the deposit performs and the solidified droplets. 7. The continuum model seem to be useful in connecting the processing parameters with the resultant microstructures. From these results, it was concluded that the fabrication of aluminum matrix composites reinforced homogeneously with SiC particles was possible.

나노-마이크로 알루미늄 혼합 입자의 공기와의 연소 모델링 (Combustion Modeling of Nano/Micro Aluminum Particle Mixture)

  • 금속 연료 중 널리 사용되는 알루미늄의 연소 특성에 관하여 1차원 연소모델링을 제안하였다. 연소 모델링은 예열영역, 반응영역, 반응 후 영역, 세 영역으로 나누어 수행하였다. 또한 희박연소로 가정하여 단일 입자의 경우 입자크기와 당량비에 따른 화염속도, 나노와 마이크로 입자의 혼합물의 경우 혼합 비율에 따른 화염속도를 압력이 1기압 조건에서 계산하여 실험결과와 비교하였다. 단일입자의 경우, 입자의 크기가 작아질수록 화염속도가 빨라지고, 당량비가 낮아질수록 화염속도가 느려지는 현상이 관찰되었다. 나노와 마이크로 입자의 혼합물의 경우, 나노 입자의 함유량에 따라 화염속도는 빨라지며, 화염구조는 분리화염과 중첩화염이 나타남이 관찰되었다.

  • 마이크로 크기의 알루미늄 분진의 폭발 특성에 대한 연구는 많이 조사되어 왔지만 나노 크기의 알루미늄 분진에 대한 연구는 매우 적다. 본 연구에서는 나노 및 마이크로 크기의 알루미늄 분진 (70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$)이 분진폭발특성에 미치는 영향을 20 L 폭발시험 장치를 사용하여 실험적으로 조사하였다. 부유 상태의 알루미늄 분진의 입자 크기가 감소하면, 나노 크기에서의 알루미늄 분진의 폭발하한농도(LEC)는 마이크로 크기의 알루미늄분진보다 감소하였다. 나노 크기의 알루미늄 분진에서의 폭발특성은 마이크로 크기의 알루미늄 분진과 명확한 폭발성의 차이를 보이지 않았다. 투과 전자 현미경(TEM )에 의해 나노 크기의 알루미늄 입자의 관찰로부터 입자 간의 응집성의 증가가 나노 알루미늄 분진의 폭발성에 영향을 미칠 수 있을 것으로 추정되었다.

  • Metal oxide particles with mole ratio of aluminum: titanium of 1:1 were synthesized by a sol-gel method. Langmuir (a) and Freundlich (b) adsorption isotherms of dissolved lead [Pb(Ⅱ)] ion on the metal oxide particles containing aluminum and titanium were determined as follows, respectively,(a) , (b) at pH 6where, correlation coefficients (R2) of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were 0.95 and 0.96, respectively.The overall adsorption rate of Pb(Ⅱ) on the metal oxide particles containing aluminum and titanium was determined by a differential bed reactor. The overall adsorption rate at pH 6 was as a following equation.at pH 6

  • Influences of aluminum carbide ($Al_4C_3$) addition on microstructure and damping capacity of Mg-3%Al casting alloy have been investigated based on experimental results of optical micrography, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry analysis and damping capacity measurement at RT. The addition of $Al_4C_3$ particles results in an efficient grain refinement. The damping capacity shows an increasing tendency with an increase in $Al_4C_3$ content. The damping value associated with $Al_4C_3$ particles is linearly dependent on the volume fraction of $Al_4C_3$ particles to the 2/3 power, $f_{2/3}$, which corresponds to the total surface area of the particles.
