Formation behavior of aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) films on Al6061 alloy was studied in view of thickness, morphology and defects in the anodic films in 20 vol.% sulfuric acid solution at a constant current density of $40mA/cm^2$, using voltage-time curve, observation of anodized specimen colors and surface and cross-sectional morphologies of anodic films with anodization time. With increasing anodizing time, voltage for film formation increased exponentially after about 12 min and its increasing rate decreased after 25 min, followed by a rapid decrease of the voltage after about 28 min. Surface color of anodized specimen became darker with increasing anodizing time up to about 20 min, while it appeared to be brighter with increasing anodizing time after 20 min. The darkened and brightened surfaces with anodizing time are attributed to an increase in thickness of porous anodic oxide film and a chemical damage of the films due to heat generated by increased resistance of the film, respectively. Cross-sectional observation of AAO films revealed the formation of defects of crack shape at the metal/oxide interface after 15 min which prevents the growth of AAO films. Width and length of the crack-like defect increased with anodizing time up to 25 min of anodizing, and finally the outer part of AAO films was partly dissolved or detached after 30 min of anodizing, resulting in non-uniform surface structures of the AAO films.
Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) which prepared with two-step anodizing method (with dissimilar solutions) was used as a template to fabricate highly ordered, free standing metal nano-rods. AAO nano-template technique can realize self-organized hexagonal pore structure with nanometer dimension size, it's easy to control pore diameter, length and density by varying anodizing conditions. Ni and Ni/Fe/Cu multi-metal layer nanorods were electrochemically deposited into AAO nano-template by AC voltage in simple sulfate solutions.. The properties of samples are tested by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission microscopy (FE-SEM).
Pb2+ ino, added in ctching sohing, is electrodeposited on a alumiunm foil for electrolycic condenser to promote its capacitance. In addition, several factoral factors in etching process are varied to examine how they change the capacitance of the condenser. The capacitance of the condenser made of 0.1 ppm pb electrodeposited aluminum foil is enhanced about 20% than of conventional ane. It is thought out that the enhanement is the result of the act of PbO2, which existed for the conveting of electrodeposited Pb, as a promoter tunnel etching of aluminum foil.
It is well known that iron is one of the most common impurity elements found in aluminum and its alloys. Iron in the aluminum forms an intermetallic compounds such as $FeAl_3$. The $FeAl_3$ particles on the aluminum surface are one of the most detrimental phases to the corrosion process and anodizing procedure for aluminum and its alloys. Trial and error surface treatment will be carried out to find the preferential and effective removal of $FeAl_3$ particles on the surfaces without dissolution of aluminum matrix around the particles. One of the preferable surface treatments for the aim of getting $FeAl_3$ free surface was an electrochemical treatment such as cathodic current density of $-2kAm^{-2}$ in a 20-30 mass% $HNO_3$ solution for the period of 300s. The corrosion characteristics of aluminum surface with $FeAl_3$ free particles are examined in a $0.1kmol/m^3$ NaCl solution. It is found that aluminum with free $FeAl_3$ particles shows higher corrosion resistance than aluminum with $FeAl_3$ particles.
Many studies have been conducted to improve the corrosion resistance and durability of various aluminum alloys through the anodizing technique. It is already used as a unique technique for enhancing the properties of aluminum alloys in various industries. This paper investigated the electrochemical corrosion and stress corrosion cracking characteristics of anodized aluminum 5083-H321 alloy in natural seawater. The corrosion characteristics were assessed by the electrochemical technique and potentiodynamic polarization test. The stress corrosion cracking characteristic was evaluated with a slow strain rate tensile test under 0.005 mm/min rate, which showed that the hard anodizing film had a thickness of about 16.8 ㎛. Although no significant characteristics of stress corrosion cracking were observed in the slow strain rate test, the anodized specimen presented excellent corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density was measured to be approximately 4.2 times lower than that of the base material, and no surface damage was observed in the anodic polarization test.
Aluminum has been widely used in the electric applications because of light metals. When mechanical element is periodically moving with contacting other surfaces, the anodizing process for aluminum is useful for avoiding the abrasive damage. The anodized element has quietly different characteristics with respect to the distribution of hardness and crystal structure. In this work, the laser drilling of anodized surface is studied experimentally. Fusion drilling method - laser drilling with inert gas blowing - is used. The effect of various process parameters (gas pressure, laser power, focus position) is investigated with respect to the hole size and circularity.
Hydration treatments were performed on the pure aluminum substrate at $100^{\circ}C$ followed by anodizing and heat treatments on the layers. The transformation behaviors of the oxide layers according to the hydration treatment were studied using TEM, XRD, RBS etc. Above $90^{\circ}C$ the hydrous oxide film could be formed, which were turned out to be hydrous oxides(AlOOH $nH_2$O). The anodization on the hydrous oxide film was more effective for the transition of amorphous anodic oxides to the crystalline $\Upsilon-Al_2$$O_3$ comparing with the case for anodizing on the aluminum substrate without hydration treatment And additional heat treatments were also helpful for the acceleration of the transformation of the hydrous oxide to $\Upsilon-Al_2$$O_3$. During the heat treatment the interface between $\Upsilon-Al_2$$O_3$and the hydrous oxide layers migrated to the outer side of hydrous layer.
AC anodizing on aluminum foil was investigated by the variation of AC voltage and frequency. The voltage and frequency were applied in the range of approximately 40~200V, 0~400Hz. The porous alumina film was formed and the growth rate of oxide film is increased with frequency. The structural property was analyzed by SEM and XRD. SEM results show the approximate relation between frequency, voltage and growth rate. The AC voltage effect on the structural modulation of porous alumina indicates that AC anodizing is useful for the application to nanocapacitor material.
