  • The aluminum extruded panel used for a high speed train shows the largest contribution to sound insulation performance of the train body. However, comparing with the flat panel having the same weight, the transmission loss falls sharply in the local resonance frequency band. Such fall of transmission loss can be improved by increasing the damping of local resonance. This study examines the charging effect of an urethane foam on the aluminum extruded panel of a high speed train. We charged the urethane foam with different mass density and in different way in the core part of the extruded panel. We measure the transmission loss and compare the sound insulation performance according to the density and charging method. Finally, Improvement effect of the transmission loss is compared and analysed in aspect of weight increment.

  • Frame structures of High speed train are constructed from corrugated panel and aluminum extruded panel, which have high bending stiffness. Transmission loss of those panels, however, is less satisfactory than other panels with same mass per unit area. Therefore, this study predicted transmission loss of aluminum extruded panels using Finite element method. Specifically, we modeled acoustic cavity above a radiation surface and analyzed correlation between T-slot and transmission loss. Moreover, we examined the effect of boundary condition changes of the structure on transmission.

  • Aluminum extruded panel used in a high speed train shows high stiffness, however, its sound insulation performance is remarkably decreased by local resonance phenomena. In this paper, improvement strategy of the sound insulation performance is proposed for the floor extruded panel used in HEMU-400x, 400km/h class next generation high speed train under development, and the improvement effect is verified by experiment. Aluminum extruded panel specimen for the floor is manufactured and urethane foam is installed in the core of the panel. Based on ASTM E2249-02, intensity transmission loss is measured and the improvement effect in local resonance frequency band is verified. Finally, improvement effect of the sound insulation performance is estimated on the layered floor structure including the foamed aluminum panel.

  • The frame elements of modern high speed trains are typically fabricated with extruded aluminum panels. However, the sound transmission loss (STL) of extruded aluminum panels is less satisfactory than flat panels with the same surface density. This study proposes a method for prediction of the sound transmission loss of extruded aluminum panels using finite element analysis. The panel is modeled by finite element analysis, and the STL is calculated using a measure of Sommerfeld radiation at the specimen surface, boundary conditions, and the internal loss factor of the material. In order to verify the validity of the predicted value, intensity transmission loss was measured on the aluminum specimen according to ASTM E2249-02. The proposed method of analysis will be utilized to predict the sound insulation performance of extruded aluminum panels for railway vehicles in the design stage, and to establish measures for their improvement.

  • Aluminum alloy is very useful material for high speed transportations due to its high strength and light weight characteristics. Especially because of a weight reduction a large extrustion of aluminum alloy carbody has been manufactured. This aluminum extruded panel is a hallow extruded panel. This shape and thickness is various by designer's sense and experience and VAW's profiles. So it is important to find an optimized shape and thickness of AEP. In this study we get the AEP's thickness to minimize a weight by applying an applying an optimization algorithm. The results of the study can be used as basic guidelines double-deck trains in the future.

  • Aluminum extruded panels are widely used instead of corrugated steel panels for weight reduction in high-speed trains. Of the layers in the train body, it makes the largest contribution to the sound insulation. However, compared with that of a flat panel with the same weight, the TL of the aluminum extruded panel is remarkably lower in the local resonance frequency band. We study aluminum extruded panels for next-generation 400-km/h trains. We investigate the problem of sound insulation and propose a practical method to improve the sound-insulation performance. The local resonance frequency region is increased by a modification of the core structure, and urethane foam is placed in the core. The effect on the sound insulation is verified by experiments. Finally, the improvement for the entire sound-transmission loss is estimated for the layered floor panels of express trains.

  • In many countries such as Japan, France and so on, the number of double-deck trains has been dramatically increased for the purpose of public traffic. Several researchers have performed feasiblilty studies related to the operations of double deck rolling stock vehicles in Korea since 2001. In recent years, rolling stock vehicles are required to have light weight to save energy consumption and maintenance costs. For these reasons, the standard EMU vehicle developed by KRRI and Kwan-Ju EMU(Electric Multi Unit) are made of aluminum extruded panels. The concept model of a double-deck rolling stock vehicle investigated in this study is also designed to use AEP(Aluminum Extruded Panel). In this paper, the methods related to the structural strength improvements of the car body are proposed through careful modifications of thicknesses and shapes of AEP.

  • The operation of double deck train have increased in many countries such as Japan france, and the Netherlands as efficient, safe and convenient alternative transportation systems. Because of continuous concentration of population into Seoul metropolitan and serious traffic jam, the number of passengers using the commuter train have been increased rapidly. Considering these situations, we can find one of the solutions for heavy traffic problems through double deck trains. Stainless steel, and aluminum extruded panel are used to reduce the weight of double deck train. In this paper we compare the results of structural analysis of the double deck car body structures with Al extruded panels and stainless steel. We hope the results of this study may be used as basic guidelines in designing double deck trains in the future.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of railway-vehicle aluminum under frame was investigated based on the metal inert gas (MIG) welding conditions. An aluminum-alloy (6005A-T6) extruded material used in the lower panel of a railway vehicle was connected through MIG welding to determine the mechanical properties of MIG welds. Argon shielding gas and filler materials, such as ER5356 and ER4043, were used as consumable welding materials. For the welding conditions of the test specimen, welding frequencies of 2.5 and 4.5 Hz were applied using the SynchroPuls function, and the root faces were 1.0 and 1.5 mm. The mechanical properties of the MIG welds were determined through tensile, bending, and fatigue tests.
