Aluminium silicate gels were prepared by gel-technique using Al(OH)3 and TEOS as starting materials. Aluminium silicate gel as formed mullite at 120$0^{\circ}C$. From this method, homogeneous mullite was formed available needle-like shaped and close compacted. As excess SiO2 mullite composition, the needle-like shaped crystal, size according to increased with SiO2, was increased from 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ but liquid phase did not affect the formation of needle-like shaped mullite. As excess Al2O3 mullite composition, the needle-shape mullite crystal could not be detected because Al2O3 acted as chunky behavior.

Heavy metal removal study is conducted from synthetic waste water by reduction and oxidation(redox) reaction of Cu-Zn metal alloy and adsorption reaction of aluminium silicate. Heavy metal whose ionization tendency is smaller than zinc are reducted in an aqueous solution, and the concentration of ionized zinc is reduced by adsorption reaction. The average diameter of metal alloy micro fiber is about $200{\mu}m$, and the surface area is wide enough to get equilibrium in a single cycle treatment. A single cycle treatment of redox reaction of Cu-Zn metal alloy, could remove 100.0 % of Cr(III), 98.0 % of Hg, 92.0 % of Sn and 91.4 % of Cu respectively. An ionization tendency of chromium is very close to zinc, but removal efficiency of chromium by redox reaction is significant. This result shows that trivalent chromium ion is expected to generate hydroxide precipitation with $OH^-$ ion generated by redox reaction. Zinc ion generated by redox reaction is readily removed by adsorption reaction of aluminium silicate in a single cycle treatment. Other heavy metal components which are not perfectly removed by redox reaction also showed very high removal efficiency of 98.0 % or more by adsorption reaction. Aluminium ion is not increased by adsorption reaction of aluminium silicate. That means heavy metal ion removal mechanism by adsorption reaction is turned out to be not an ion exchange reaction, but an adsorption reaction.

Europium$(Eu^{2+}\;or\;Eu^{3+})$-activated calcium aluminium silicate phosphors were synthesized for the first time and the structures and luminescence characteristics of these phosphors were investigated. The phosphors in this study emitted blue, green, and even red light depending on the starting milterials and annealing conditions for synthesis. In addition, the structure was also changed when the different starting materials were used. When $CaCO_3$ was used as a starting material, tetragonal $Ca_2Al_2SiO_7$ was formed. However, pure green light was emitted when the annealing was conducted in reduced atmosphere and red one was emitted by annealing in air. In the case of $CaSiO_3$ as a starting material, triclinic $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ was formed and only pure blue emission was observed. Moreover, this blue phosphor exhibited higher intensity than that of commercial YAG:Ce phosphor, which showed the possibility of application on the phosphor for new light source such as a UV-LED.

For the white UV-LED applications, $Eu^{2+}$-activated calcium aluminium silicate phosphors were synthesized for the first time and the structures and luminescence characteristics of these phosphors were investigated. The phosphors in this study emitted blue. green or blue-green light depending on the starting materials for synthesis. In addition, the structure was also changed when the different starting materials were used. When CaO and $CaCO_3$ was used as a starting material. tetragonal $Ca_2Al_2SiO_7$ was formed and blue-green and pure green light was emitted. respectively. However. in the case of $CaSiO_3$, triclinic $CaAl_2Si2O_8$ was formed and only pure blue emission was detected. The maximum emission intensity was obtained from $CaAl_2Si_2O_8:Eu^{2+}$ phosphors, which intensity was about 1.4 times higher than that of YAG:$Ce^{3+}$ phosphor used for blue LED.
Increasing water consumption produced sludge problems of the water treatment plants. The objective of this study is to investigate aluminium coagulants recovery n acidic and alkaline conditions. Water treatment plant sludge produced in Pusan Metropolitan City were tested for the aluminium extraction process. Experiment samples were obtained in summer from water treatment plants of Deoksan and Myongjang. Aluminium coagulants used in these plants during the test period were polyaluminium chloride(PAC), polyaluminium sulfate organic(PSO), polyaluminium sulfate silicate(PASS). Aluminium contents of water treatment sludge were in the range of 7.2~10.9% of the total solids. The recovery percentages for aluminium and iron by acidic extraction method was evaluated to 88% and 42% respectively. Extracted mass variation for other materials such as iron, manganese, total organic carbon was observed during the extraction operation. Alkaline extraction produced more than two times amount of total organic carbon than that in the acidic extraction process.

The concern of seriousness and harmful effects of environmental pollution is rising by the various water pollutions, appearances of new micro-noxious substances and increase of sustainable pollutants. The method is suggested that can effectively increase the removal of organic substances and several pollutants using a coagulation process. The experiment for characteristics of $ZrSiO_4$ (zirconium silicate) as a coagulation-aid was carried out for application to coagulation process with domestic wastewater and lake water, and the removal rate of the organic substances depending on a dosage was evaluated by PDA (Photometric Dispersion Analyzer) in this study. Zeta-potential of zirconium silicate solution was -32.22 mv at pH 7 and the lower negative(-) charge was detected in the more acidic conditions. Absorbance on $UV_{254}$ presented higher when zirconium silicate was added than in a domestic wastewater itself. Besides, the results by PDA experiment represented that injection of zirconium silicate could promote growing of floc. Tests for coagulation process were conducted by three ways which are pre-injection, co-injection and post-injection of zirconium silicate with alum. Accordingly, removal efficiency of organic substances increased over 15% in co-injection than in using of alum as a sole reagent. When a 20 mg/L of alum was used with a 10 mg/L of zirconium silicate, the removal efficiency was high up to 90%. Removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was improved more than 15% in case of dosage of coagulant either PAC (Poly aluminium chloride) or PACS (Poly aluminium chloride Silicate) together with zirconium silicate. As a result, the removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ were 5~10% higher in a co-injection of zirconium silicate with a coagulant than a pre-injection and a post-injection but it of soluble substances was lower in a co-injection.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the changing patterns of the available elements by the control of lime addition amount and temperature in Acid Sulfate Soils under the submerged condition. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. pH and contents of available phosphate, soluble silicate, $NH_4-N$, and exchangeable iron in soils were decreased but exchangeable aluminium and manganese, and water soluble sulfur in soils increased after submergence. 2. Lime treatment increased pH, available phosphate, soluble silicate, $NH_4-N$, and water soluble sulfur, but that decreased exchangeable aluminium, iron, and manganese in soils. 3. Treatment with 12me/100gr of Ca as $CaCO_3$, showed the marked effect in increasing the exchangeable aluminium and iron, and increasing pH value to about 6.5 as well as available phosphate and $NH_4-N$. 4. Increases in available phosphate, $NH_4-N$, and exchangeable iron with aging of the soil flooded and lime treated were higher at $35^{\circ}C$ than those at $25^{\circ}C$. 5. Throughout submerged period a significant positive correlation was observed between pH and soluble silicate while the pH has negative correlation with exchangeable elements such as aluminium, iron, and manganese etc.

The goal of this research was to identify the impact of silicate polymerization on the formation of insoluble aluminiumsilicate salts which could be a cause of irreversible fouling in the membrane process by lab-scale test. For this, the amount and characteristics of precipitates that were formed in six samples with different Al and Si concentration were analyzed. And the particles was also observed by SEM-EDS(Scanning Electron Microscope - Electron Dispersion Spectrophotometer) to compare morphology and ratio of Al and Si in each precipitates. Finally the reactive and nonreactive silicate contents in the solution and precipitates were analyzed to calculate silicate form content in each fraction. The amount of precipitates was in proportion to the total concentration of both element in solution. And the amount of insoluble particle that was not dissolved in the acid solution was recorded the highest in the sample 2 of which Si concentration was lower than the saturation concentration, 50 mg/L. The content of reactive silicate in precipitates was also recorded the highest value in sample 2 of which almost silicate form was reactive. When the silicate concentration is same, that value was recorded the highest in the sample with highest Al concentration. The SEM morphology of the precipitates was similar to that of Aluminiumhydroxide and the insoluble precipitates was not dissolved in acidic solution with pH 2.7 was able to observed only in sample 2. The ratio of Al and Si in the precipitates was ranged $0.48\sim3.14$, thai of sample 2 was recorded the highest value, 3.14. It is concluded that the insoluble aluminiumsilicate could be easily formed in the solution of which silicate exist as a reactive form and coexisting Al is sufficient.
The effect of DCCA (Drying Control Chemical Additives) on the drying of gel was investigated in order to determine an optimum drying condition of mullite precursor through sol-gel process. Aluminium sec-butoxide was synthesized from aluminium foil and then mullite powders were synthesized from Tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate (TEOS) and the aluminium sec-butoxide. N, N-dimethyl formamide (DMF), Glycerol, 1, 4-Dioxane, and Oxalic acid were used as DCCA. Mullite powders that were calcined at 200, 900, 1100, and $1250^{\circ}C$ for 2hr were analysed by XRD, TG-DTA, FT-IR, and SEM in order to investigate structural change and characteristics of calcined powders. The results of this work showed that the drying time of gel was reduced to about half in the presence of 0.1mol DMF compared with the absence of DCCA and also calcined powders were obtained without remarkable structural change despite of the addition of DCCA.
