Performance Characteristics of CNG Vehicle at Various Compression Ratios (압축비 변경에 따른 CNG차량의 성능특성 연구)

  • Natural gas is one of the promising alternative fuels for automotive vehicles, because it has lower exhaust emissions and better fuel economy characteristics than those of gasoline, and can be used in conventional gasoline engines without major modifications. In the present study, a conventional gasoline engine was modified to a CNG engine, which can be operated with CNG only, and an engine bench test was performed to calibrate the operating parameters of the engine such as air fuel ratio, spark advance, etc. at various operating conditions. The modified CNG engine, then, was installed on a commercial gasoline vehicle and a vehicle driving test on chassis dynamometer was performed to examine the fuel economy and exhaust emission characteristics. As a result, the prototype CNG vehicle showed lower exhaust emissions and better fuel economy characteristics, but slightly reduced brake horse power, compared to the gasoline vehicle.

  • Dimethyl ether (DME) can be used as a clean diesel alternative fuel due to the high cetane number and low emission, it can also be applied to automotive fuel as a blended liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) because physical properties are similar to those of LPG. In this study, feasibility test of LPG vehicle using blended DME-LPG fuel was investigated. Three types of fuel supply such as LPLi (Liquid phase LPG injection), LPGi (Liquid phase gas injection) and mixer type were selected to consider the LPG fuel-injection system. The performance characteristics of LPG vehicle were examined by using LPG and blended DME-LPG fuel in order to compare the exhaust emissions (CO, THC, $NO_X$) and fuel economy. The emissions and fuel economy of DME-LPG blend fuel were comparable to those of LPG with increasing driving distance.

  • Fuel cell systems offer high efficiencies for energy conservation for transportation application. In addition, they can operate on alcohols and alternative fuels, while producing little or no noxious emissions. The goal of the fuel cell in transportation should be research and commercialization of fuel cell vehicles as economic competitors for internal combustion engine vehicle. The objective of the present study is to analyze feasibility of the fuel cell/battery combination as a power source for a bus.

  • This study investigates market barriers in increasing the market share of Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs). In particular, this study first conceptualizes the AFVs market model with the aid of generic system archetypes suggested by Wolstenholme. Among four generic system archetypes suggested by Wolstenholme, the market structure of AFVs can be explained by the 'relative achievement' archetype. Starting from the generic system archetype, this study extends the model boundary step by step to take account of various model assumptions necessary to simulate the model numerically. If there is a significant network effect on vehicle operating costs, it is difficult to achieve the shift to AFVs even in the long term without a policy intervention because the car market is locked into the current structure. There are several possible policy options to break the 'locked-in' structure of the car market, such as subsidies on vehicles, subsidies on fuels, and a niche management policy.

  • To reduce the particulate matter and nitrogen oxides from diesel engine, many studies are proceeding and being accomplished practically. In this situation, LNG engine has important meaning as a clean fuel and alternative energy. In this reason, we try to understand the property of LNG fuel and predict the performance with using LNG engine simulation program and practical test. It could help to lead and apply practically LNG engine was studied in performance and other parameter related with engine performance and compared with current diesel engine. The simulation program was proved to be good in describing the experimental result. This means current heavy duty vehicle could be modified to LNG engine.

  • Electric vehicle(EV), hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) and fuel cell electric vehicle(FEV) are seen as one way of reducing the harmful effects of traffic and of improving energy efficiency. Therefore the status and developing trend of the EV, HEV and FEV are given in this paper. A major aspect of alternative drive trains is the electric drive train. The automotive aspect in developing electric drive trains is emphasized.

  • The next generation alternative fuel of diesel, DME (Dimethyl Ether) discharges particulate matter hardly due to chemical structural as oxygen-fuel so it has the eco-friendly property. Despite these advantages, the DME has the technical difficulties to apply to the diesel engine because of a low calorific value, viscosity and compressibility effects. From this point of view, we performed experimental studies on improved reliability of DME common-rail vehicle and lubricity enhancement of DME fuel for empirical distribution of eco-friendly DME fuel. Also we analyzed solubility of lubrication enhancer according to a drop in temperature, try to secure reliability about core parts of DME vehicle by applying lubrication enhancer in the DME common-rail vehicle.

  • In this study, we provide trends on alternative fuel vehicles promoted by postal agencies in 10 countries in North America, the EU, and Asia. It describes the specifications of most EV vehicles in operation, plans, and strategies to replace existing internal combustion engines with new vehicles in the future and provides the current status of alternative vehicle charging networks in each postal agency. This paper will help postal agencies, logistics companies, automobile companies, motorcycle companies, and even individuals who want to use vehicles with alternative fuels, such as electric vehicles, on strategies to establish and implement before introducing and operating the vehicles.

  • Fuel cell power system was developed for high-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Liquid chemical hydride was selected as a fuel due to its high energy density. Liquid storage of the fuel is an ideal alternative solution of the existing compressed hydrogen storage. The fueling system that extracts hydrogen from chemical hydride consists of catalytic reactor, micro-pump, fuel cartridge, separator, and controller. The fuel cell power system including the fueling system and the fuel cell that generates electricity was integrated into a proposed UAV. The performance verification of the fuel cell power system was performed to use as a power plant of the UAV.

Emission Factor and Fuel Economy Calculation Using Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance Program (자동차 환경검사에 의한 대기오염물질 배출계수 및 연비 산출)

  • An objective of this study is to give practical information that could be used for calculating pollutant emission factors and fuel economy from Korean Inspection & Maintenance program, which has been using steady state acceleration simulation mode. Concentration results from I/M test is adequately converted to mass emission factors and fuel efficiency data, which have unit of g/km and km/L, respectively. Exhaust volume flow(EVF), which is for converting emission result from concentration to mass, is measured by tracer method in various vehicle speed - power condition. It is found that there is an apparent second order relationship between EVF and vehicle inertia weight. EVF is expressed in function of vehicle inertia weight in order to estimate EVF in I/M site without measuring device. Converted mass emission results from measured EVF and raw emission analyzer show a satisfactory agreement with those from conventional CVS-bag type measurement system. Mass emission factors and fuel efficiency from measured EVF and estimated EVF also show good agreement to each other. Considering that an I/M program has great advantages to recruit-based emission test in terms of the number of test vehicle, the information in this study can be used for developing an alternative procedure to collect more various data to establish national database of mobile emission factors and fuel economy, even though the driving cycle in I/M program is steady state cycle rather than transient cycle.
