  • Among many other alternative energy resources, small scale hydropower has been brought into attention as a reliable source of energy today, which had been relatively neglected since 1960s. Present low head of Francis turbines and small scale hydroturbines, however, have limitations in the minimum required head and flow rate for efficient operation. This study attempts to develope the Francis turbine which is expected to run efficiently even in very low head and small flow rate, so that the limitations on the conventional small scale hydropower could alleviated and competition with other alternative energy sources in the changable design conditions could attained. The Francis turbine of a new concept was designed based on changable design conditions, hydrodynamics and theory of power transmission. The result of the study shows that two stages runner is more efficient, cheaper in construction, faster responding, and easier maintaining than single stage runner of Francis turbine

  • Continuation power flow has been developed to remove the ill-condition problem caused by singularity of power flow Jacobian at and near steady-state voltage instability point in conventional power flow. When solving large-scale power transmission systems, an alternative strategy for improving computational efficiency and reducing computer storage requirements is the decoupled power flow method, which makes use of an approximate version of the Newton-Raphson procedure. This paper presents a technique to improve the speed of continuation power flow system using decoupled power flow method.

  • Numerical simulations were performed to analyse the flow pattern of the approach channel and to design the spillway guidewall for stable flow conditions. RMA-2, two dimensional finite element model which can easily represent complicated geometry was used, and model parameters were estimated from the observation data of hydraulic model test. Numerical experiments were made separately for the approach region and for the upstream region, and upstream boundary position of the hydraulic model beyond which the boundary effects are negligible was determined from the numerical results. For the stable flow condition in approach channel, alternative designs for guidewall were developed, and flow analysis for alternative designs was done through the numerical simulation. From the analysis of alternative design, we can see that the flow pattern in the approach channel is stable and the lateral stage difference disappears mostly before the spillway crest.

  • This study presents an analytical model of the pneumatic circuit of an air suspension system to analyze the characteristics of vehicle height control. The analytical model was developed through the co-simulation of Simulink(air spring) and HyPneu(pneumatic circuit). Variant effective area of air spring and flow coefficients of pneumatic valves were estimated experimentally prior to the system test, and utilized in simulation. One-comer test apparatus was established using the components of commercial air suspension products. The results of simulation and experiment were so close that the proposed analytical model in this study was validated. However the frictional loss of conduit and heat dissipation which were ignored in this study need to be considered in future study. As an application example of proposed analytical model, an alternative pneumatic circuit of air suspension to conventional WABCO circuit was evaluated. The comparison of simulation results of WABCO circuit and alternative circuit show that proposed analytical model of co-simulation in this study is useful for the study of pneumatic system of automotive air suspension.

  • In this paper, alternative natural refrigerant R290(Propane), R600(Butane), R717(Ammonia), R1270(Propylene) for freon refrigerant R22 were used working fluids for 2-stage compression and 1-stage expansion refrigeration system. The operating parameters considered in this study included evaporation temperature, condensation temperature, subcooling degree, superheating degree, mass flow rate ratio of inter-cooler. The main results were summarized as follows : The COP of 2-stage compression and 1-stage expansion refrigeration system increases with the increasing subcooling degree and mass flow rate ration of inter-cooler, but decreases with the increasing evaporating temperature, condensing temperature and superheating degree. Therefore, subcooling degree, mass flow rate ratio of inter-cooler of 2-stage compression and 1-stage expansion refrigeration system using natural refrigerants have an effect on COP of this system. The COP of natural refrigerants was higher than the COP of freon R22 in this study, so points to be considered are the security, the attached facilities for natural refrigerants than COP.

  • The lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has been used to simulate rarefied gas flows in a micro-system as an alternative tool. However, previous results were mainly focused on a simple geometry with flat walls because the LB method is modeled on uniform Cartesian lattices. When previous boundary conditions for the microflows are applied to curved walls, the use of them requires approximation of the curved boundary by a series of stair steps, and introduces additional errors. For macroflows, no-slip curved wall boundary treatments have been developed remarkably in order to overcome these limits. However, the investigations for the slip curved wall boundary have rarely been performed for microflows. In this work, a curved boundary treatment of the LB method for a slip flow has been introduced. The results of the LB method for 2D microchannel and 3D microtube flows are in excellent agreement with the analytical solutions.

  • In this study, we discussed the application of Watershed model and Load Duration Curves (LDC) in Total Water Load Management System. The Flow Duration Curves (FDC) and the LDC were generated using the results of the daily HSPF model and analyzed on monthly or yearly flow duration variability, and non-point pollutant discharge loads by entire flow conditions. As a result of the calibration and verification of the HSPF model, both the flow and the water quality were appropriately simulated. The simulated values were used to generate the Flow Duration Curve and the Load Duration Curve, and then the excess rate by entire flow conditions was analyzed. The point and non-point pollutant discharge loads for entire flow conditions were calculated. It is possible to evaluate the variability of water quality in specific flow duration through the curves reflecting the flow duration variability and to confirm the characteristics of the pollutant source. For a more scientific Total Water Load Management System, it is necessary to switch from a current system to a system that can take into account the entire flow conditions. For this, the application of the watershed model and load duration curve is considered to be the best alternative.

  • This paper presents two flexible alternatives to the decoupled load flow(DCL) method. The proposed load flow methods can improve the convergence profiles of the DCL by reflecting in part the effects of the off-diagonal terms in the Jacobian at minimal costs. They can improve the convergence characteristics especially when the power system operating states deviate from the conditions required for stable convergence of the DCL and the P-Q coupling becomes significant. Two algorithms are obtained from the expression of the full Newton-Raphson load flow (NRL) method by successively diminishing the effects of the off-diagonal submatrices in the Jacobian. In the process of simplification, the Neuman series expansion is utilized. Test results show promising performances of the proposed algorithms in their convergence characteristics both in number of iterations and overall convergence speeds. Proposed algorithms are expected to provide flexible alternatives to the NRL when the DCL experiences convergence problems.

  • One of the most important methods used in the modern analysis of linear networks and systems is the signal flow graph technique, first introduced by S.J. Mason in 1953. In essence, the signal-flow graph technique is a graphical method of solving a set of simultaneous. It can, therefore, be regarded as an alternative to the substitution method or the conventional matrix method. Since a flow-graph is the pictorial representation of a set of equations, it has an obvious advantage, i.e., it describes the flow of signals from one point of a system to another. Thus it provides cause-and-effect relationship between signals. And it often significantly reduces the work involved, and also yields an easy, systematic manipulation of variables of interest. Mason's formula is very powerful, but it is applicable only when the desired quantity is the transmission gain between the source node and sink node. In this paper, author summarizes the signal-flow graph technique, and stipulates three rules for conversion of an arbitrary nonsource node into a source node. Then heuses the conversion rules to obtain various quantities, i.e., networks gains, functions and parameters, through simple graphical manipulations.

  • This paper presents the Coefficient of performance(COP) and mass flow ratio of cascade refrigeration system with respect to refrigerants appling to high temperature cycle. The operating parameters considered in this study include degree of superheating and subcooling, compressor efficiency, evaporating temperature, condensing temperature and internal heat exchanger effectiveness in high temperature cycle. The result of this study is as follows : The COP of cascade system increases with increasing degree of superheating and subcooling, compressor efficiency and internal heat exchanger effectiveness except increasing condensing temperature. The mass flow ratio of low and high temperature cycle increases with increasing evaporating temperature and condensing temperature, but decreases with increasing internal heat exchanger effectiveness, degree of superheating and subcooling. Also, the mass flow ratio has no correlation with compressor efficiency at high temperature cycle.
