  • A total of 264 independently oriented core samples were collected from 26 sites in the southwestern part (the Naktong Trough) of the Cretaceous $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Basin in south Korea. The sampled formations comprise the sedimentary Shindong and the Hayang Groups of the Lower Cretaceous age. Alternating field and thermal demagnetizations were conducted. Characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) was relatively easily isolated in each formation except in the Chinju formation, from which only remagnetization circles were observed. Even though an extensive use of the fold test was not possible due to the nearly homoclinal nature of the strata in the area, we believe that the ChRM of each formation is of primary origin based on the following grounds: The in-situ ChRM direction of each formation is different from the present geomagnetic field direction. Fisherian precision parameter becomes enhanced through the tilt correction in all formations, closely to the values required for a positive fold test. Three out of the five studied formations pass the reversal test. The mean palaeomagnetic pole position from the studied area is found to be statistically different from the contemporary pole from the Chinese block exclusive of the Shandong area. The difference in magnetic declination suggests a $14.5^{\circ}$ (${\pm}10.5^{\circ}$) clockwise rotation of the studied area relative to the Chinese block comprising the west of the Tan-Lu fault. On the other hand, any significant difference in magnetic inclination and concurrent palaeolatitude is not observed between the studied area and China as well as the other area (Taegu-Andong area) in the $Ky{\check{o}}ngsang$ Basin. The dual nature of the magnetic polarity confirmed in all formations suggests an older than 124 Ma (Neocomian or older) age of the studied sedimentary strata.

  • We have studied magnetic properties of Co/Pt multilayered films which have attracted great interest as high-density magneto-optical (MO) recording media due to their good MO properties. For this study, [Pt(45 )/Co(35 )]$\times$8 films were deposited with a Pt buffer layer of 60 on Si(100) substrate by alternating electron-beam evaporation in a high vacuum and were ion beam mixed by using 80keV Ar+ at 25$0^{\circ}C$. Especially, an external magnetic field was added to help changing magnetic property during ion beam mixing (IBM). The intermixing of Co and Pt layers after IBM was confirmed with Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The MO property of the film was measured with magneto-optical Kerr spectrometer and the change of magnetic easy axis in the film plane was observed from Ker loop data. This anomalous result might be correlated with the change of atomic structure due to the intermixing effect.

  • For the fabrication of poly-crystalline silicon ingot, CCCC (Cold Crucible Continuous Casting) method under a high frequency alternating magnetic field, was utilized in order to prevent crucible consumption and ingot contamination and to increase production rate. In order to effectively and continuously melt and cast silicon, which has a high radiation heat loss due to the high melting temperature and a low induction heating efficiency due to a low electric conductivity, Joule and pinch effects were optimized. Throughout the present investigation, poly-crystalline Si ingot was successfully produced at the casting speed of above 1.5 mm/min under a non-contact condition.

  • This paper presents numerical and experimental results of modal parameter identification in a generator stator frame for 500 MW fossil power plants. A commercial finite element analysis S/W was employed for modal analysis. The generator is excited by alternating electromagnetic forces, mainly of 120 Hz in 60 Hz machines, due to magnetic field and electric current in windings. It is necessary to verify that the stator frame has adequate frequency margin from the excitation frequency to avoid possible resonance when operating. Thus, frequency margin required for the stator frame is established using the numerical and experimental results. The results show that the stator frame meets the frequency-margin requirements. Also, results of modal analysis for design modification in order to reduce weights of the stator frame without deteriorating vibration characteristics are presented.

  • A contact-less power supply system (CPS) allows electrical energy to supply to mobile consumers without any electrical or mechanical contact. CPS works in the same principle as a transformer, with the track litz cable forming the primary circuit and the pickup as the secondary. The track power supply generates the high frequency alternating current in the track cable. The captured AC magnetic field generated by the track conductors produces electrical energy in the pickup coil and the pickup rectifier converts the high frequency AC power to DC while regulating the power to the load. This paper presents the theoretical analysis, simulation and experiment리 results of the series-parallel resonant converter working as contact-less power supply system.

  • The integrity of the industrial equipment in use under high temperature and high pressure must be assessed by regularly measuring the degraded mechanical properties during service time. In order to nondestructively monitor the degraded mechanical properties of industrial equipment, a measuring method of the reversible permeability(RP) using surface type probe is presented. The method for measuring the RP is based on that RP is the differential value of hysteresis loop. The RP is exactly the foundation hatmonics induced in a detecting coil measured by lock-in amplifier tuned to a frequency of the alternating perturbing magnetic field. The peak of RP is measured around the coercive force. Steel material used in this work was 12Cr ferritic heat resisting steel. The eleven kinds of samples aged during different times under same temperature ($700^{\circ}C$) were prepared. Peak interval of reversible permeability(PIRP), Vickers hardness, and tensile strength measured for the aged samples decreased abruptly for short aging time (below 500 h), but the change became small at a long aging time. Vickers hardness and tensile strength linearly decreased as RIRP decreased, so the degraded mechanical properties of 12Cr ferritic heat resisting steel could be nondestructively evaluated by measuring RIRP.

  • For use in spintronic materials, dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are under consideration as spin injectors for spintronic devices[l]. $TiO_2$-based DMS doped by a cobalt, iron, and manganese et al. was recently reported to show ferromagnetic properties, even at temperatures above 300K and the magnetic ordering was explained in terms of carrier-induced ferromagnetism, as observed for a III-V based DMS. An anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and co-occurance of superparamagnetism in reduced Co-doped rutile $TiO_{2-\delta}$ films have also been reported[2]. Metal segregation in the reduced metal-doped rutile $TiO_2-\delta$ films still remains as problems to solve the intrinsic DMS properties. Superlattice films have been proposed to get dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) with intrinsicroom-temperature ferromagnetism. For a $TiO_2$-based DMS superlattice structure, each layer was alternately doped by two different transition metals (Fe and Mn) and deposited to a thickness of approximately $2.7\;{\AA}$ on r-$Al_2O_3$(1102) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The r-$Al_2O_3$(1102) substrates with atomic steps and terrace surface were obtained by thermal annealing. Samples of $Ti_{0.94}Fe_{0.06}O_2$(TiFeO), $Ti_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}O_2$(TiMnO), and $Ti_{0.94}(Fe_{0.03}Mn_{0.03})O_2$ show a low remanent magnetization and coercive field, as well as superparamagnetic features at room temperature. On the other hand, superlattice films (TiFeO/TiMnO) show a high remanent magnetization and coercive field. An anomalous Hall effect in superlattice films exhibits hysisteresis loops with coercivities corresponding to those in the ferromagnetic Hysteresis loops. The superlattice films composed of alternating layers of $Ti_{0.94}Fe_{0.06}O_2$ and $Ti_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ exhibit intrinsic ferromagnetic properties for dilute magnetic semiconductor applications.

  • The purposes of this study was to collect, analyze, and describe the MF exposure levels from subways in Korea and to measure and evaluate the MF levels generated from electric appliances used at general homes. The target subway lines were Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 to Line 8, Bundang Line, Incheon Line, Daegu Line, Gwangju Line, and Busan Line 1 and Line 2. We measured at each station in those subway lines and, all the train types (pantograph-equipped, motor-equipped, and common), and platform types(facing and isolating) were investigated by the distance(80, 200, 400 cm) from the train on 19 targeted subway lines using 3 magnetic field measuring devices (EMDEXII, Enertech Co.) during the survey from January till October, 2004. On the other hand, the levels of the 60Hz magnetic fields generated from 14 items of home electric appliances such as electric blankets, hair dryers, electric razors, etc. were measured at 10 general homes using 5 EMDEXII meters with a sampling interval of 1.5 second by the distance(surface, 30, 50, 100, 300cm ) from the target electric appliances. The survey results in the whole subway lines examined in this study were as follows; Seoul Metropolitan Line 4 using AC(alternating current) power source showed the highest mean value of $2.85{\mu}T$, followed by Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 running between Seoul and Incheon using AC($2.78{\mu}T$), Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 between Seoul and Uijongbu using AC($2.73{\mu}T$), Bundang Line using AC($1.79{\mu}T$), Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 connected from Yongsan using AC($1.67{\mu}T$), Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 between Seoul and Suwon using AC($0.79{\mu}T$), and so on. In general, the intensity of the magnetic field in the subway systems in Korea was significantly higher when using AC($2.14{\pm}0.91{\mu}T$) than when using DC($0.29{\pm}0.44{\mu}T$) power source. Among the home electric appliances examined, microwave ovens showed the highest mean value of $7.69{\mu}T$, followed by hair dryers($6.47{\mu}T$), vacuum cleaners($5.27{\mu}T$), televisions ($2.26{\mu}T$), electric blankets($1.38{\mu}T$), personal computers ($0.81{\mu}T$), and so on. Two items of electric appliances showed the excess value of $0.2{\mu}T$ at the distance of 30cm in the MF exposure level; electric razors $1.58{\pm}2.13{\mu}T$ and vacuum cleaners $0.48{\pm}0.44{\mu}T$. As a whole, this study showed a tendency that the shift of the MF levels according to the increase of distance from the electric appliances was lower than those of the results surveyed in UK and USA. As a result, this study is expected to suggest meaningful data for the future study in exposure assessment of magnetic fields and for the establishment of guidelines for subways and electric appliances in Korea. More detailed and large scaled exposure assessment studies should be performed continuously to get the various and useful information on health risk assessment of MFs in Korea.

  • Current sensors that use a Hall element and Hall IC to measure the magnetic fields generated in steel silicon core gaps do not distinguish between direct and alternating currents. Thus, they are primarily used to measure direct current (DC) in industrial equipment. Although such sensors can measure the DC when installed in expensive equipment, ascertaining problems becomes difficult if the equipment is set up in an unexposed space. The control box is only opened during scheduled maintenance or when anomalies occur. Therefore, in this paper, a method is proposed for facilitating the safety management and maintenance of equipment when necessary, instead of waiting for anomalies or scheduled maintenance. A Bluetooth 4.0 low-energy current-sensor system based on near-field communication is used, which compensates for the nonlinearity of the current-sensor output signal using a piecewise linear model. The sensor is controlled using its generic attribute profile. Sensor nodes and cell phones used to check the signals obtained from the sensor at 50-A input currents showed an accuracy of ±1%, exhibiting linearity in all communications within the range of 0 to 50 A, with a stable output voltage for each communication segment.
