  • Turbulent flow past a square cylinder confined in a channel is numerically investigated by Large Eddy Simulation(LES). The main objectives of this study are to verify the experimental results of Nakagawa et al.[Exp. in Fluids, Vol. 27, 3, pp. 284∼294, 1999] by LES and to obtain related flow information in detail. The LES results obtained are in excellent agreement with the experiment both qualitatively and quantitatively. The passive paticles numerically released into the flow field clearly show the barman vortex street. However, the vortices shed from the cylinder are significantly affected by the presence of the plates. Futhermore, periodic and alternating vortex-rollups are observed in the vicinity of the plates. The rolled-up vortex is convected downstream together with the corresponding Karman vortex forming a counter-rotating vortex pair. It is also revealed that the cylinder greatly enhances mixing process of the flow.

  • The Middle to Late Cambrian Machari Formation in the Machari area, Yeongweol, Korea consists of 7 lithofacies and 3 facies associations, which are thought to be deposits of carbonate ramp (mid to outer ramp) to basin environment. These lithofacies are bedded lime mudstone, laminated lime mudstone, bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone, poloidal/bioclastic wackestone, conglomerate, mottled lime mudstone, and shale. Bedded lime mudstone facies, a few cm thick lime mudstone alternating with shale layer, is believed to have been deposited by intermittent dilute turbidity currents. Laminated lime mudstone facies, alternating lime mudstone with laminated shale, is interpreted to have been formed by fine-grained turbidity currents. Bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies was deposited by turbidity current and peloidal/bioclastic wackestone faceis was deposited by debris flow. Conglomerate facies is thought to be deposits of storm activities. Mottled lime mudstone facies is interpreted to have been formed by bioturbation. Shale facies is interpreted to have been formed by suspension settling. Seven lithofacies of the Machari Formation are divided into three facies associations. Facies association I consisted of bedded lime mudstone facies, mottled lime mudstone facies, conglomerate facies, and bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies, is interpreted to have been deposited on the mid ramp. Facies assocaition II consisted of bedded lime mudstone facies, laminated lime mudstone facies, bioclastic/peloidal packstone to grainstone facies, and peloidal/bioclastic wackestone facies is thought to be deposits of the outer ramp. Facies association III consisted of laminated lime mudstone facies and shale facies is interpreted to have been formed on the basin environment.

  • Acceleration sensors have widely been used in the various fields of industry. In recent years, micromachining accelerometers have been developed and commercialized by the micromachining technique or MEMS technique. Typical structure of such sensors consist of a cantilever beam and a vibrating mass fabricated on Si wafers using etching. This study investigates the feasibility of powder blasting technique for microfabrication of sensor structures made of the pyrex glass alternating the existing Si based acceleration sensor. First, as preliminary experiment, effect of blasting pressure, mass flow rate of abrasive and no. of nozzle scanning on erosion depth of pyrex and soda lime glass is studied. Then the optimal blasting conditions are chosen for pyrex sensor. Structure dimensions of designed glass sensor are 2.9mm and 0.7mm for the cantilever beam length and width and 1.7mm for the side of square mass. Mask material is from aluminium sheet of 0.5mm in thickness. Machining results showed that tolerance errors of basic dimensions of glass sensor ranged from 3um in minimum to 20um in maximum. This results imply the powder blasting can be applied for micromachining of glass acceleration sensors alternating the exiting Si based sensors.

  • This dissertation describes an optimization method for fabricating thick films with superconducting YBCO powders by electrophoresis technique. The lateral alternating applied voltage caused to shake the superconducting powder vertically to the deposition field during the process of the oriented deposition so that it was deposited along the c-axis on the silver tape with shaky-aligned EPD. As the result, the optimized thin film fabrication method was obtained to get more dense and uniform surface morphology as well as the improved critical current density. For commercial utilization and efficiency, in this dissertation, alternating voltage of 25-120 V/cm in frequency of 60Hz was proposed to apply it as a subsidiary source for shaky-flow deposition so that the fabricated thin film showed uniform surface morphology with less voids and cracks and $T_{c.zero}$ of 90 K and the critical current density of $3419A/cm^2$.

  • In this study, a noble method is proposed to prevent the edge overcoating (EOC) that may develop near the edge of the steel strip in the gas wiping process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing. In our past study (Trans. of the KSME (B), Vol. 27, No. 8, pp. $1105\~1113$), it was found that EOC is caused by the alternating vortices which are generated by the collision of two opposed jets in the region outside the steel strip. When the two opposed jets collide at an angle much less than $180^{o}$, non-alternating stable vortices are established symmetrically outside the steel strip, which lead to nearly uniform pressure on the strip surface. In order to deflect both jets downward by a certain angle, a cylinder with small diameter is installed tangentially to the exit of the lower lip of the two-dimensional jet. In order to find an optimum cylinder diameter, the three dimensional flow field is analysed numerically by using the commercial code, STAR-CD. And the coating thickness is calculated by using an integral analysis method to solve the boundary layer momentum equation. In order to compare the present noble method with the conventional baffle plate method to prevent the EOC, the flow field with a baffle plate is also calculated. The calculation results show that the tangentially installed cylinder at the bottom lip of the jet exit is more effective than the baffle plate to prevent EOC.

  • In this study, the bivariate frequency analysis of the independent annual rainfall event series was done to be used for the runoff analysis, whose results were also compared with those from the conventional univariate frequency analysis. This study was applied to three differently-sized basins such as the Joongryang Stream, Chunggye Stream, and Ooyi Stream. The Clark model was used as the runoff model, and the SCS method was applied for the calculation of the effective rainfall. The alternating block method and the Huff method were considered to be compared for the temporal distribution of rainfall event. Summarizing the results are as follows. (1) The difference between the univariate and bivariate frequency analysis results were large when the rainfall duration was short, but significantly decreased as the rainfall duration increased. The univariate frequency analysis results were bigger when the rainfall duration was short, but smaller in opposite case. (2) The peak flow derived by applying the alternating block method was bigger than that by the Huff method. Also, the peak flow when applying the alternating block method increased as the rainfall duration increased, but converged smoothly around the rainfall duration of 24 hours. (3) For the Joongryang Stream, when applying the Huff method, the peak flow derived for the bivariate frequency analysis was bigger than that for the univariate case, but for the other two basins, the results were opposite. When applying the alternating block method, the results were consistent for all three basins that the peak flow derived by applying the bivariate frequency analysis was bigger than those by the univariate frequency analysis.

  • General behaviors based on hydraulic characteristics of natural streams and channels have been recently analyzed and developed via various numerical models. However in the states of natural hydraulics, an experimental research must be performed simultaneously with the mathematical analysis due to effects of hydraulic properties such as meander, sediment, and so on. In this study based on 2-D advection-dispersion equation, flow and tracer experiments were performed in the S-curved meandering laboratory channel with a rectangular cross-section. The channel was equipped with instrument carriages which was equipped with an auto-traversing system to be used with velocity measuring sensors throughout the depth and breadth of the flow field. To measure concentration distribution of the salt solution was adjusted to that of the flume water by adding methanol and a red dye (KMnO4) was added to aid the visualization of the tracer cloud, the tracer was instantaneously injected into the flow as a full-depth vertical line source by the instantaneous injector and the initial concentration of the tracer was 100,000 mg/l. The secondary current as well as the primary flow pattern was analyzed to investigate the flow distribution in the meandering channels. The velocity distribution of the primary flow for all cases skewed toward the inner bank at the first bend, and was almost symmetric at the crossovers, and then shifted toward the inner bank again at the next alternating bend. Thus, one can clearly notice that the maximum velocity occurs taking the shortest course along the channel, irrespective of the flow conditions. The result of the tracer tests shows that pollutant clouds are spreading following the maximum velocity lines in each cases with various mixing patterns like superposition, separation, and stagnation of pollutant clouds. Flow characteristics in each cases performed in this study can be compared with tracer dispersion characteristics with using evaluation of longitudinal and transverse dispersion coefficients(LDC, TDC). As expected, LDC and TDC in meandering parts have been evaluated with increasing distribution and straight parts have effected to evaluate minimum of LDC and TDC due to symmetric flow patterns and attenuations of secondary flow.

  • The effect of flow configuration in ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cell are investigated by using a three-dimensional numerical model. Typical flow configurations including co-flow and counter-flow are considered. The ammonia is directly fed into the stack without any external reforming process, resulting in an internal decomposition of NH3 in the anode electrode of the stack. The result showed that temperature profile in the case of counter-flow is more uniform than the co-flow configuration. The counter-flow cell, the temperature is highest at the middle of the channel while in the case of co-flow, the temperature is continuously increased and reached maximum value at the outlet area. This leads to a higher averaged current density in counter-flow compared to that of co-flow, about 5%.

  • The experimental study on gasesous laminar free-jet flow was investigated by applying high voltage alternating current (AC) to the nozzle. The jet flows were affedcted significatly by AC electric fields particularly at high voltages for applied frequencies less than 80 Hz, while those were not responded to further increased frequencies. Under certain AC conditions of applied voltgae and frequency, the laminar gaseous fuel stem was broken down at an axial distance and subsequently separtaed into some parts. The velocity fields in jet flows interactiong with applied electric fields were compared with those without having electric field. Interaction of applying electric fields with laminar free jet flow was discussed in detail, and the possible mechanism was also explained.

  • N-machine produces more than input energy at above 3000 rpm. any space energy is absorbed when the N-machine is rotating at a very high velocity. Laws of electromagnetics verify that normal conduction is due to that electrons moves from one three-dimensional crystallizing ${\pi}-bonding$ orbital to next. The ${\pi}-far$ infrared rays are generated from the resonance and rotation of the electrons on the orbitals of three-dimensional crystallizing ${\pi}-bonding$ atoms. Material in universe is composed of ${\pi}-rays$, which have alternative outward electric field. If the alternative outward electric fields of the ${\pi}-rays$ are resonant each other they make attraction force, which is the gravity. The collection of space energy is due to a attraction force between the radially alternating electric field and the ${\pi}-far$ infrared rays in the space. Electrons flow by absorbed density difference of ${\pi}-far$ infrared rays along a conduction wire, which also verifies that normal electron conduction is due to a flow from one three-dimensional crystallizing ${\pi}-bonding$ orbital to next.
