대관령 인근 고랭지는 표고가 높아 여름철에도 서늘하여 오래 전부터 씨감자와 호냉성원예작물의 주산지로 발전되어 왔다. 이러한 저온기후자원을 이용하여 농업활동이 이루어지는 고랭지는 산지의 특이한 지형조건 때문에 날씨변화가 심하고 이에 따른 작물피해가 잦다. 기상청 자동기상관 측장치(automated weather station : AWS)가 일부 지점에 설치되어 있으나 기온과 바람 강우량만이 관측되고 있어 농업적인 이용에는 한계가 있다.(중략)

태백산맥의 가장자리에 위치한 용연동굴은 전형적인 산지Karst(Alpine Karst)의 면모를 갖추고 있다. 용연동굴은 태백시 북서부 화전동 용수골 상부 산사면부 약 980m 상에서 북쪽으로 개구하고 있으며, 용수골 서북부 정상(1,418m)에서 동동남 방향으로 이어지는 능선부 하부 가까이 위치한다. 능선은 비교적 완만하나 남북사면은 개석의 진전으로 약 50도 내외의 급경사 사면지형을 나타낸다. 특히 동굴의 남사면은 용수골 용천수의 하식작용에 의하여 북사면 보다 더욱 경사가 급하다.(중략)

고씨동굴은 산지지역에 형성되어있는 일명 산악카르스트(Alpine karst)이다. 본 동굴은 태백산맥의 서향산지와 소백산맥의 분기점 북부산지 사이에 위치하고 있으며, 주변산맥들은 대화산(1027m : W 4.5km), 계족산(1013m: N 5.2km), 응봉산(1013m: NE 6.2km) 둥으로 거의 봉고동일성 산지들로 둘러 싸여있다. 산지의 형상은 데이비스(Davis)의 지형윤회설에 의하면 침식에 의한 산지의 개석이 진전되고 계곡이 깊고 경사가 비교적 급준한 만장년기 지형에 속한다.(중략)

Hydrurus foetidus is a cold-water golden alga (Chrysophyceae) found in fast-flowing rivers mainly during time of snowmelt. It has primarily been studied by scientists located near alpine or northern locations, but there are also observations both in south and north America, Russia, Japan, in the Hope Bay area (Antarctica) and Himalaya. If and where environmental conditions are appropriate, Hydrurus may be distributed "worldwide." More information is wanted from areas where its presence may be expected.

Thyme leaves of aerial part in 5 domestic species was extracted by several solvens, and chemical composition of extracts was analyzed by GC-MS to determine the effective solvent for phenol compound extracts. Total phenol contents containing thymol and carvacrol according to methanol extracts of Ulleung island, Jeju middle mountain, Kyeonggido, Jeju alpine species, and Gangwondo were 92.21, 84.92, 77.43, 74.16, and 73.51%, while them of ethanol extracts of Gangwondo, Jeju middle mountain, Kyeonggido, Ulleung island, and Jeju alpine species were in the order of and their contents were 93.64, 93.62, 90.74, 89.52, and 72.65%, separately. Hexane extracts of Gangwondo and Ulleung island thyme were almost composed by phenol contents containing thymol for 100 and 95.71%.

This experiment was investigated to select suitable cultivars for the hydroponics of sweet pepper in the alpine area in summer. Sweet pepper plants were grown in the greenhouse in Jinbu (550m above sea level), Pyungchang, Korea. Seeding and transplanting of the 12 sweet pepper cultivars were done in February and April, respectively. The sweet pepper fruits were harvested every week from July to November. Seven cultivars were chosen from the 12 tested cultivars. 'Special' and 'Cupra' for red, 'Boogie', 'Fellini' and 'President' for orange, and 'Fiesta' and 'Derby' for yellow had more fruit sets, the more percentage of standardized products for the export to Japan, and higher yield than the other cultivars. This result has shown various characteristics among or within the cultivars. This study would provide the basic database of cultivars and give the information about control vegetative and reproductive growth to the farmers cultivating sweet pepper.
