  • In the solar atmosphere, below the region of temperature minimum, temperature decreases with height and above it, temperature increases with height. Therefore the inference of temperature minimum is a basis of the study about the solar atmosphere and heating problem. The temperature of the temperature minimum region can be inferred from acoustic cutoff frequency. According to a recent study the acoustic cutoff frequency is related to the peak frequency of the power spectrum the chromospheric three-minute velocity oscillations. Using this relationship, we infer the temperature of temperature minimum. The three minute velocity oscillation and its power spectrum are obtained for a pore observed with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) $H{\alpha}$ band. We present the inferred temperature and compare it with the temperature of Maltby model. We also investigate the effect of the inclination of magnetic field on the temperature minimum.

  • The aim of this work was to determine the chemical composition of essential oil from aerial partsof Mentha arvensis L. f. piperascens (MAO) and to evaluate the effect of its fragrant chemicals on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity of human brain. The MAO was obtained by supercritical $CO_2$ extraction. The maximum yield was 2.38% at conditions of $70^{\circ}C$ and 200 bar. There were 32 volatile chemicals with 6 alcohols (67.11%), 13 hydrocarbons (17.05%), 9 esters (11.50%), 2 ketones (7.16%), 1 oxide (2.77%), and 1 aldehyde (0.56%). The major components were (Z,Z,Z)-9,12,15-octadecatrien-1-ol (50.06%), 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyacetophenone (7.50%), and 3,4-dihydro-8-hydroxy-3-methyl-1H-2-benzopyran-1-one (6.60%). Results of the EEG study showed that inhalation of MAO significantly changed the EEG power spectrum values of relative gamma, relative fast alpha, and spectral edge frequency 90%. During the inhalation of MAO, the value of relative fast alpha was significantly increased (p<0.05). On the other hand, the values of gamma and the spectral edge frequency 90% were significantly decreased (p<0.05). The present study suggests that fragrant chemicals of essential oil of M. arvensis reduce the level of mental stress and that they could be used in the treatment of psychophysiological disorders.

  • In connection with the development of new anticonvulsant agents with a broad spectrum, we found that N-Cbz-alpha-amino-alkylsuccinimides showed significant anticonvulsant activities, and the pharmacological activities of these compounds were dependent on their stereochemistry and N-substituted alkyl group. These results prompted us to define the effects of other functional group on the anticonvulsant activities of these compounds. Therefore a series of N-alkoxycarbonyl-alpha-amino-N-methylsuccinimide were prepared from N-Cbz-aspartic acid and were evaluated with their anticonvulsant activities againt the MES and PTZ tests, in order to define the effect of N-substituted alkoxy carbonyl group with the anticonvulsant activities. From these studies, it was found that all the tested N-alkoxycarbonyl-alpha-amino-N-methylsuccinimides exhibited significant anticonvulsant activities in the PTZ test and were not active in the MES test. The most active compound in the PTZ test was (S) N-ethoxycarbonyl-alpha-amino-N-methyl-succinimide. We found that the pharmacological activities in the PTZ test were dependent on their N-alkoxycarbonyl groups. They follow as such: The order of anticonvulsant activities for (R) series as evaluated by $ED_{50}$ was N-phenoxycarbonyl=N-4-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl > N-ethoxycarbonyl > N-allyloxycarbonyl > N-tert. butoxycarbonyl compound: For the (S) series N-ethoxycarbonyl > N-phenoxycarbonyl > N-allyloxycarbonyl compound. From the above results, it was conceivable that N-substituted alkoxycarbonyl group had certain effects on the anticonvulsant activities of N-alkoxycarbonyl-${\alpha}$-amino-N-methylsuccinimides.

  • The heat of desorption and the work function change induced by nitrogen adsorption on the slepped tungstein surface plants, W(210) and W(310), are measured using the Field Electron Emission Microscope(FEM). The adsoption sites are predicted from the Thermal Desortion Spectra(TDS). The wirk function change of both W(210) and W(310) planes increase as increasing the nitrogen dose and saturates at the nitrogen dose about 5 Langmuir to 0.29 eV and 0.20 eV respectively. We find three adsorption site on each plane for the low dose range. The TDS result shows that the intensity of $\alpha_1$ state on W(310) is much stronger than that of $\alpha_1$ state on W(210), and the direction of nitrogen dipole moment adsorbed on the sites correspond to $\alpha_1$ and $\beta_2$ state on W(210) and W(310) planes are in the opposite direction to that of the equivalent states on W(100) plane. From this observation we can predict the relative atomic position in the z-direction (perpendicular direction to the surface) of nitrogen molecules/atoms adsorbed on these sites.

  • In n/${\gamma}$ mixed field of $^{241}Am-Be$(${\alpha}$, n) neutron source, we seperated the neutron component from gamma ray component. At the center of the detector, $^6Li$ was doped on the cerium activated glass plate for $^6Li$(${\alpha}$, n)T nuclear reaction. The time differences of the light following excitations by different scintillators, BC501($C_8H_{10}$) and cerium, and by the same scintillator for different radiations as neutrons and gamma-rays are used to apply the methods of PSD(Pulse Shape Discriminator) and CFD(Constant Fraction Discriminator). The figure of merit of $^6Li$ fast neutron spectrometer is estimated as 1.36.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the effect of electroacupuncture(EA) at an acupoint, HT8(Sobu), on normal humans by using power spectral analysis. We examined the effect on the Heart Rate Variability(HRV), and the balance of the autonomic nervous system. Methods : Thirty-two healthy volunteers participated in this study. EEG(Electroencephalogram) power spectrum exhibits site-specific and state-related differences in specific frequency bands. A thirty-two channel EEG study was carried out on thirty-two subjects(14 males; mean age=23.5 years old, 18 females; mean age=21.5 years old). HRV and EEG were simultaneously recorded before and after acupuncture. Results : In the ${\alpha}$(alpha) band, during the HT8-acupoint treatment, the power values in the ${\alpha}$(alpha) band significantly decreased(p<0.05) at 28 channels. In the ${\beta}$(beta) band significantly decreased(p<0.05) at 26 channels. In ${\delta}$(delta) band significantly decreased(p<0.05) at 18 channels. In ${\theta}$(theta) band significantly decreased(p<0.05) at 20 channels. ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ values were increased at 6 channels and decreased at 10 channels.${\beta}/{\theta}$ values were increased at 10 channels and decreased at 19 channels. Mean-RR(RR-interval), Complexity, RMSSD(Root mean square of successive differences), SDSD(Standard deviations differences between adjacent normal R-R intervals), norm HF showed a significantly increased and mean-HRV, norm LF, LHR(LF/HF Ratio) showed a significantly decreased after HT8-acupoint treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions : These results suggest that EA at the HT8 mostly causes significant changes on alpha(28 channels), beta(26 channels), delta(18 channels), theta(20 channels) bands and mean-HRV, mean-RR, complexity, RMSSD, SDSD, norm LF, norm HF and LHR. If practicing EA at the HT8, it will regulate the function of the cerebral cortex, decrease activity of the sympathetic and increase parasympathetic nervous activity.

  • In order to examine the effects of N-substituted alkyl group on the anticonvulsant activities of N-Cbz-$\alpha$-aminoglutarimides as novel anticonvulsants with broad spectrum, a series of (R) or (S) N-Cbz-$\alpha$-amino-N-alkylglutarimides (1 and 2) were prepared from the corresponding (R) or (S) N-Cbz-glutamic acid and evaluated for the anticonvulsant activities in the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) test and pentylenetetrazol induced seizure(PTZ) test, including the neurotoxicity. The most potent compound in the MES test was (S) N-Cbz-$\alpha$-amino-N-methylglutarimide($ED_{50}$=36.3 mg/kg, PI=1.7). This compound was also most potent in the PTZ test ($ED_{50}$=12.5 mg/kg, PI=5.0). The order of anticonvulsant activities against the MES test as evaluated form $ED_{50}$ values for (R) series was N-methyl > N-H > N-ethyl > N-allyl ; for the (S) series N-methyl > N-H > N-ethyl > N-alkyl > N-isobutyl compound. Against the PTZ tests, the order of anticonvulsant activities showed similar pattern ; for the (R) series, N-methyl > N-H > N-ethyl > N-allyl ; for the (S) series N-methyl > N-H > N-ethyl > N-allyl > N-isobutyl compound. From the above results, N-substituted alkyl groups were though to play an important role for the anticonvulsant activities of N-Cbz-$\alpha$-amino-N-alkylgutarimides.

  • ${\Alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ was accomplished by chemical method as low temperature as possible and the crystallographic and magnetic properties have been studied by Mossbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The sample heated at 15$0^{\circ}C$ is found to have a Corundums symmetry with the hexagonal lattice constant a=8.26$\pm$0.05$\AA$, c=8.75$\pm$0.05$\AA$. The M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectra between the 4.2K and the room temperature show that the ${\Alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ crystallized with a single phase and fine sizes. The particle size distribution has the Gaussian distribution center at 98$\AA$ and the half width of 32$\AA$.TEX>.
