  • The pore formation characteristic of Mg alloy during Lost Foam Casting(LFC) was investigated with reduced pressure test and real casting, which was compared with the results of previous work for Al alloy. Cast Mg alloys in LFC had much lower porosities in comparison with those of Al alloys. Also, the proper pouring temperature gave the minimum porosity like Al alloy although it was higher than that of Al alloys due to the worse fluidity of Mg alloy. The pore formation mechanism of Mg alloy in LFC was similar to that of AI alloy but the critical temperature showing the different mechanism is higher than that of Al alloy as much as $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. The result that Mg alloy in LFC had the lower porosity comparing with Al alloy was due to the extra solubility of hydrogen gas although the solubility of Al alloy was easily exceeded by the external sources like pyrolyzed polystyrene products. The mold evacuation gave the lower porosity due to the removal of polystyrene pyrolysis products, and reduced shrinkage defects. Also, there was a proper evacuation pressure that gave a porosity of almost 0vol%. But much higher vacuum degree than this proper pressure caused the severe entrapment of polymer pyrolysis products that gave the large porosity.

  • This study investigated the effect of pre-treatment on the PEO film formation of AZ91 Mg alloy. The pre-treatment was conducted for 10 min at room temperature in 0.5 M oxalic acid (C2H2O4) solution containing various ammonium fluoride (NH4F) concentrations. The pre-treated AZ91 Mg specimens were anodized at 100 mA/cm2 of 300 Hz AC for 2 min in 0.1 M NaOH + 0.4 M Na2SiO3 solution. When AZ91 Mg alloy was pretreated in 0.5 M oxalic acid with NH4F concentration less than 0.3 M, continuous dissolution of the AZ91 Mg alloy occurred together with the formation of black smuts and arc initiation time for PEO film formation was very late. It was noticed that corrosion rate of the AZ91 Mg alloy became faster if small amount of NH4F concentration, 0.1 M, is added. The fast corrosion is attributable to fast formation of porous fluoride together with porous oxides in the reaction products. On the other hand, when AZ91 Mg alloy was pretreated in 0.5 M oxalic acid with sufficient NH4F more than 0.3 M, a thin and dense protective film was formed on the AZ91 Mg alloy surface which resulted in faster initiation of arcs and formation of PEO film.

  • For a better understanding of the correlation between a corrosion and a microstructure, it is necessary to study a phase transformation with an annealing condition for Zr-Nb alloy. Zr-5wt.%Nb alloy with different phase characteristics was prepared with various annealing conditions. A microstructural study and corrosion test were performed to investigate the effect of a phase such as the phase type, fraction, and size on corrosion. The corrosion behavior of the Zr-5Nb alloy was very sensitive to the annealing condition, which affected the formation of the ${\beta}$-phases (${\beta}$-Nb or ${\beta}$. The corrosion rate of the Zr-5Nb alloy annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ with the formation of the ${\beta}$-Nb phase was lower than that of the Zr-5Nb alloy annealed from 600 to $800^{\circ}C$ with the formation of the ${\beta}$-Zr phase. The highest corrosion rate was observed for the ${\beta}$-quenched Zr-5Nb alloy. After a consideration of the corrosion rate and micro structure of the Zr-5Nb alloy, the corrosion resistance of that alloy was improved due to the formation of a small sized ${\beta}$-Nb phase which could be controlled by the annealing condition.

  • The behavior of electrodeposition of amorphous nickel-phosphorus has been studied from the point of deposition mechanism, kinetic parameters, morphology and formation of alloy films. The electorode reaction and electrode kinetics of deposition of nickel were significantly influenced by the content of phosphorus. The cathodic deposition of nickel-phosphorus alloy might be governed by the diffusion process of phosphorous acid. The direction of growth layer of the nickel-phosphorus alloy was different with substrate material. The formation of nickel-phosphorus alloy films was affected considerably by the solution compositions, electrolytic conditions and properties of the material as an underlayer.

  • In an attempt to find an effective production way of the$ Sm_2Fe_{17}N_{x-}type material, the Sm_2Fe_{17-}$type alloy with chemical composition of Sm 22.7 wt.%, Fe72.3 wt.% Nb 5.0wt.% was subjected to a HD (hydrogen decrepitation) treatment prior to a nitrogenation, and its effect on the formation of the nitride material was investigated. The nitrogenation behaviours of the alloy were investigated using a TPA(thermopiezic analysis), TMA, and DTA under nitrogen gas, and XRD. It has been found that the previous HD treatment significantly facilitated the formation of $Sm_2Fe_{17}N_{x-}$type nitride, and this was accounted for by the clean surface and the finer particle size of the powder caused by the HD treatment. It has also been found that the hydrogen atoms existing in the initial HD-treated alloy were removed almost completely during the nitrogenation. The heat output associated with the nitrogenation of the previously HD-treated alloy was found to be significantly smaller than that of the as-cast alloy.

  • It was attempted to improve the wear resistance of Al alloy under the load condition by making a formation of the thicker surface hardening alloy layers. The thicker surface hardening alloy layers were formed on 6061 Al alloys overlayed by MIG and TIG welding process with Cu powders feeding. The characteristics of hardening and wear resistance have been investigated in relation to the microstructures of alloyed layers, with a selection of optimum alloying conditions for formation of overlaying layer. The results obtained were summarized as follows With increasing feeding rate of Cu powders by MIG welding, the hardness and specific wear of the overlay weld alloys were increased. It is considered that these high hardness and specific wear of overlay weld alloys were due to the formation of Θ($Al_2Cu$) phases. With increasing feeding rate of Cu powders by TIG welding, the hardness and specific wear of the overlay weld alloys were increased in feeding rates 12 and 18g/min. However, the hardness and specific wear were decreased in the powder feeding rate 38g/min. It is considered that considered that decrease of hardness and specific wear in the powder feeding rate 38g/min due to formation of ${\gamma}$($Al_4Cu_9$) phases.

  • Formation behavior of PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) films on AZ31 Mg alloy was studied in aqueous solutions containing various concentrations of hydroxide ion ($OH^-$) and silicate ion ($SiO_3{^{2-}}$) by voltage-time curves, and corrosion resistance of the PEO film-covered specimen was investigated by immersion test in 0.5 M NaCl solution. From the analyses of the voltage-time curves, it is suggested that two different types of anions are essentially needed for the formation of PEO films on AZ31 Mg alloy: film formation agent and local film breakdown agent. $SiO_3{^{2-}}$ ion acts only as a film formation agent but $OH^-$ ion acts not only as a film formation agent but also film breakdown agent. The PEO films prepared on AZ31 Mg alloy in alkaline silicate solution showed very good corrosion resistance without any pitting or filiform corrosions up to 480 h of immersion in 0.5 M NaCl.

  • The present work is concerned with the formation behavior of anodic oxide films on Al7075 alloy under a galvanostatic condition in 20 vol.% sulfuric acid solution. The formation behaviour of anodic oxide films was studied by the analyses of voltage-time curves and observations of colors, morphologies and thicknesses of anodic films with anodization time. Hardness of the anodic oxide films was also measured with anodization time and at different positions in the anodic films. Six different stages were observed with anodiziation time : barrier layer formation (stage I), pore formation (stage II), growth of porous films (stage III), abnormal rapid oxide growth (stage IV), growth of non-uniform oxide films (stage V) and breakdown of the thick oxide films under high anodic voltages (stage VI). Hardness of the anodic oxide films appeared to decrease with increasing anodization time and with the position towards the outer surface. This work provides useful information about the thickness, uniformity, imperfections and hardness distribution of the anodic oxide films formed on Al7075 alloy in sulfuric acid solution.

  • A surface hardenable low alloy carbon steel was implanted with medium energy (20 - 50KeV) $N_2^+$ ions to produced a modified hardened surface. The implantation conditions were varied and are given in several doses. The surface hardness of treated and untreated steels were measured using depth sensing ultra micro indentation system (UMIS). It is shown that the hardness of nitrogen ion implanted steels varied from 20 to 50GPa depending on the implantation conditions and the doses of implantation. The structure of the modified surfaces was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the high hardness on the implanted surfaces was as a result of formation of non-equilibrium nitrides. High-resolution XPS studies indicated that the nitride formers were essentially C and Si from the alloy steel. The result suggests that the ion implantation provided the conditions for a preferential formation of C and Si nitrides. The combination of evidences from nano-indentation and XPS, provided a strong evidence for the existence of $sp^3$ type of bonding in a suspected $(C,Si)_xN_y$ stoichiometry. The formation of ultra hard surface from relatively cheap low alloy steel has significant implication for wear resistance implanted low alloy steels.
