  • The plastic deformation behavior of an aluminum alloy containing a particle and porosities was investigated at room temperature during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). Finite element analysis by using ABAQUS shows that ECAP is a useful tool for eliminating residual porosity in the specimen, and more effective under friction condition. The simulation, however, shows considerably low density distributions for matrix near a particle at which many defects may occur during severe deformation. Finite element results of effective strains and deformed shapes for matrix with a particle were compared with theoretical calculations under simple shear stress. Also, based on the distribution of the maximum principal stress in the specimen, Weibull fracture probability was obtained for particle sizes and particle-coating layer materials. The probability was useful to predict the trend of more susceptible failure of a brittle coating layer than a particle without an interphase in metal matrix composites.

  • An experiment is carried out to investigate the characteristics of blanking for copper alloy C194 (t=0.254mm), a kind of IC lead frame material. By varying clearance between die and punch, the shapes of shear profile are examined. Finite element analysis with element deletion algorithm for ductile fracture mode is also carried out to study the effect of clearance theoretically and to compare with experimental results. The rectangular shape specimen with four different corner radius is used to study the characteristics of blanking for straight side and corner region simultaneously. As the result, the ratios measured from the experiment of roll over, burnish, and fracture zone based on intial blank thickness are compared with those of FE analysis. Both experiment and FE analysis show that the amount of roll over and fracture is increased as the clearance increases. It has been found that larger clearance is required than that of straight region when the radius of corner is less than thickness of blank, in order to maintain same quality of shear profile at the corner region.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of loading at three different occlusal surface position of the gold alloy crown on the stress distributions in surrounding bone, utilizing 3-dimensional finite element method. A three dimensional finite element model of an implant with simplified gold alloy crown and supporting bone was developed for this study. A oblique or vertical load of 100 N was applied at the following position at each FE model : 1) center of occlusal surface, 2) a point on the buccal side away from center of occlusal surface (COS) by 2.8mm, 3) a point on the lingual side away from COS by 2.8mm. In the results, Minimum von Mises stresses under vertical load or oblique load of 100N were about 6MPa at the center of occlusal surface and about 40MPa at the point on the buccal side, respectively. From the results we could come to the conclusion that occlusive loading position could be an important factor for establishment of structural safety of supporting bone.

  • Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloy uncontained Be element for using as dental porcelain alloy were analyzed the mechanical properties through bonding strength and fracture test after the bonding with porcelain. The bonding strengths between alloy and ceramic were measured through the shear bond strength test. Consequently, the T-3 group contained Be element that had shear strength of 41.13(${\pm}5.11$)MPa was showed the highest shear strength than the other groups. The second highest group was a verabond contained Be element that had shear strength of 40.72(${\pm}5.98$)MPa. The results of the other groups according to the shear strength were Wirobond(38.40(${\pm}9.66$)MPa) belonged to Co-Cr alloy, and Verabond 2V(32.77(${\pm}4.31$)MPa), Bellabond N(28.63(${\pm}6.39$)MPa), Bellabond plus(24.97(${\pm}6.13$)MPa), Argeloy N.P. Star(22.69(${\pm}3.41$)MPa) uncontained Be element, respectively. The morphological aspects of the fracture surface between alloys and ceramic were observed that all groups were caused mixed failure as conformation attached ceramic fragments to metallic surface by fracture process.

  • The study investigated the effect of the distance between two collinear circumferential surface cracks on the primary stress corrosion crack (PWSCC) growth in alloy 600TT steam generator tubes using a finite element damage analysis based on the PWSCC initiation model and macroscopic phenomenological damage mechanics approach. The damage analysis method was verified by comparing the results to the previous study results. The verified method was applied to collinear circumferential surface PWSCCs. As a result, it was found that the collinear cracks showed earlier coalescence and penetration times than the a single crack, and the times increased with the distance. In addition, it is expected that penetration may occur before coalescence of two cracks if they are more than a specific distance apart.

  • The microstructural changes of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-1Cu alloy have been studied during high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) at the range of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite of as-received alloy was changed to austenite single phase after HTGN treatment at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer, however the interior region that was not affected nitrogen permeation remained the structure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite. With raising the HTGN treatment temperature, the concentration and permeation depth of nitrogen, which is known as the austenite stabilizing element, were increased. Accordingly, the depth of austenite single phase region was increased. The outmost surface of HTGN treated alloy at $1000^{\circ}C$ appeared Cr nitride. And this was in good agreement with the thermodynamically calculated phase diagram. The grain growth was delayed after HTGN treatment temperature ranges of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ due to the grain boundary precipitates. For the HTGN treatment temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$, the fine grain region was shown at the near surface due to the grain boundary precipitates, however, owing to the depletion of grain boundary precipitates, coarse grain was appeared at the depth far from the surface. This depletion may come from the strong affinity between nitrogen and substitutional element of Al and Ti leading the diffusion of these elements from interior to surface. Because of the nitrogen dissolution at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer by HTGN treatment, the surface hardness was increased above 150 Hv compared to the interior region that was consisted with the mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.

  • Studies for tube spin forming have been implemented restrictively compared to spinning process, because of the complex of deformation mechanism. Especially there were not many studies by using FEM(Finite Element Method) for overcoming restriction of upper bound method. In this paper, the tube spinning process is analyzed to produce cylindrical body made by titanium alloy. In analysis, processing parameters was obtained by using upper bound method to consider material properties of titanium alloy and finite element analysis was implemented to investigate the flatness and the elongation of the titanium alloy workpiece by using ABAQUS code. The independent variables are ; material properties of workpiece, angles of roller, reduction of diameter. Three variables, two angles of roller and reduction of diameter are optimized by using the upper bound method. In this method, we can estimate the workable power, working force and reduction of diameter, and also the flatness and the elongation of workpiece by the finite elements analysis using ABAQUS/standard. The results indicates that these variables play a critical factors of spinning process for the titanium alloy and the optimum values of these variables.

  • Ti and Ti based hydrogen storage alloys have been thought to be the third generation of alloys with a high hydrogen capacity, which makes it difficult to handle because of high reactivity. In order to solve the problem, the activation of a wide range of hysteresis of hydriding/dehydriding and without degradation of hydrogen capacity due to the hydriding/dehydriding cycle have to be improved in order to be aplied. Ti-Cr alloys have a high capacity about 0.8 wt.% in an ambient atmosphere. When the Ti-Cr alloys are added to Nb and Ta elements, they formed a laves phase in the alloy system. The Nb element was expected to make easy diffuse hydrogen in the Ti-Cr storage alloy, which was a catalytic element. In this study, the Ti-Nb-Cr ternary alloy was prepared by melt spinning. As-received specimens were characterized using XRD (X-ray Diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) and TG/DSC (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry). In order to examine hydrogenation behavior, the PCI (Pressure-Composition-Isotherm) was performed at 293, 323, 373 and 423 K.

  • Effects of Ca content on the refinement of primary Si of Aluminum B390 alloy have been examined. Ca was found to have an effect on the refinement of primary Si particle. Primary Si particle size has been refined as Ca content of the melts decreased and cooling rate increased. A control of Ca content by the addition of $CuCl_2$ to the melt was the most efficient in the refinement of primary Si particles. The minimum size of primary Si particles in this study was $15.0\;{\mu}m$ when a residual content of Ca element in the alloy was 5ppm, Primary Si particle size was refined as primary Si crystallization temperature increased, which was attributed to the decrease of Ca content in the melts.
