  • The crack growth responses of as-received and as-welded Alloy 600/182 and Alloy 690/152 welds to constant loading were measured by a direct current potential drop method using compact tension specimens in primary water at $325^{\circ}C$ simulating the normal operating conditions of a nuclear power plant. The as-received Alloy 600 showed crack growth rates (CGRs) between $9.6{\times}10^{-9}mm/s$ and $3.8{\times}10^{-8}mm/s$, and the as-welded Alloy 182 had CGRs between $7.9{\times}10^{-8}mm/s$ and $7.5{\times}10^{-7}mm/s$ within the range of the applied loadings. These results indicate that Alloys 600 and 182 are susceptible to cracking. The average CGR of the as-welded Alloy 152 was found to be $2.8{\times}10^{-9}mm/s$. Therefore, Alloy 152 was proven to be highly resistant to cracking. The as-received Alloy 690 showed no crack growth even with an inhomogeneous banded microstructure. The cracking mode of Alloys 600 and 182 was an intergranular cracking; however, Alloy 152 was revealed to have a mixed (intergranular + transgranular) cracking mode. It appears that the Cr concentration and the microstructural features significantly affect the cracking resistance and the cracking behavior of Ni-base alloys in PWR primary water.

  • The dissimilar metal joints welded between Ni-based alloy, Alloy 690 and low alloy steel, A533 Gr. B with Alloy 152 filler metal were characterized by using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, secondary ion mass spectrometry and 3-dimensional atom probe tomography. It was found that in the weld root region, the weld was divided into several regions including unmixed zone in Ni-base alloy, fusion boundary, and heat-affected zone in the low alloy steel. The result of nanostructural and nanochemical analyses in this study showed the non-homogeneous distribution of elements with higher Fe but lower Mn, Ni and Cr in A533 Gr. B compared with Alloy 152, and the precipitation of carbides near the fusion boundary.

  • Three dimensional atom probe tomography (3D APT) is applied to characterize the dissimilar metal joint which was welded between the Ni-based alloy, Alloy 690 and the low alloy steel, A533 Gr. B, with Alloy 152 filler metal. While there is some difficulty in preparing the specimen for the analysis, the 3D APT has a truly quantitative analytical capability to characterize nanometer scale particles in metallic materials, thus its application to the microstructural analysis in multi-component metallic materials provides critical information on the mechanism of nanoscale microstructural evolution. In this study, the procedure for 3D APT specimen preparation was established, and those for dissimilar metal weld interface were prepared near the fusion boundary by a focused ion beam. The result of the analysis in this study showed the precipitation of chromium carbides near the fusion boundary between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152.

  • Most Recently, with rapid development in marine industries such as marine structures and ship, there occurs much interest in the study of corrosion characteristics which play an important role in design of cooling water system like heat-exchanger. Especially, as operating environment of fresh cooling water system in vessels is acidified, this system is seriously corroded. In this study, to study on the corrosion characteristics of Al-alloy shell for cooler, the electrochemical polarization test of materials for the marine fresh water cooler such as Al-alloy, Cu and naval brass was carried out in fresh water. And thus the polarization resistance and anodic polarization behavior of Al-alloy, Cu and naval brass are investigated. Also, galvanic corrosion characteristics of Al-alloy coupled with Cu and naval brass is considered. The main results obtained are as follows ; (1) The current density of corrosion is high in order of Al-alloy > naval brass > Cu (2) As anodic potential increases, the corrosion resistance of naval brass is better than that of Cu. (3) The galvanic corrosion of Al-alloy coupled with Cu and naval brass is activated than corrosion of Al-alloy.

  • Lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium have recently received much attention in the automotive industries because of environmental and fuel-efficiency concerns. Using the powder metallurgy (PM) process for these materials creates significant opportunities for the cost-effective manufacture of lightweight automotive parts. In the present study, an Al-Cu-Mg alloy was fabricated using conventional PM processes. Primarily, the effects of the alloying elements on the sintering characteristics and mechanical behavior after heat treatment were investigated. A microstructural analysis was performed using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope to investigate the behavior of liquid phase sintering, including the formation of precipitates. The dependence of the mechanical behavior on the alloying elements was evaluated based on the transverse rupture strength.

  • Effects of the disproportionating hydrogen pressure and alloy composition on the texture in the HDDR-treated Nd-Fe-B particles were examined using the $Nd_{12.6}Fe_{81.4}B_6$ and $Nd_{12.6}Fe_{68.7}B_6Co_{11.0}Ga_{1.0}Zr_{0.l}$ alloys. Disproportionation kinetics of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase in the Nd-Fe-B alloy was retarded significantly by the addition of Co, Ga and Zr. The retarded disproportionation kinetics of the $Nd_2Fe_{14}B$ phase ensured a wider processing window in terms of disproportionating hydrogen pressure for achieving a texture in the HDDR-treated Nd-Fe-B alloy particles.

  • This study was undertaken to examine the electrochemical corrosion properties of an $Co_{80}Nb_{10}B_{10}$ and $Co_{82}Nb_8B_{10}$ amorphous alloys prepared by melt-spinning method under various conditions. The potentiodynamic polarization responses at various levels of pH (pH 2, pH 7, pH 12) showed that the corrosion current rate of $Co_{80}Nb_{10}B_{10}$ alloy is lower than that of $Co_{82}Nb_8B_{10}$ alloy in all levels of pH, implying the general corrosion resistance of the alloy with higher Nb content is better than that with higher Co content. The pitting potential of $Co_{80}Nb_{10}B_{10}$ alloy was also better than that of $Co_{82}Nb_8B_{10}$, evidenced by the higher pitting potential. Nb is thought to be effective in increasing the protectiveness of the passive film and hence to improve the corrosion resistance of Co-Nb-B alloys.

  • In this study, the metallurgical analysis and mechanical property measurement have been performed to investigate the effect of long-term thermal aging on the microstructural evolution in the fusion boundary region between weld metal and low alloy steel in dissimilar metal welds. A representative dissimilar weld mock-up made of Alloy 690-Alloy 152-A533 Gr. B was fabricated and aged at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2,750 hours. The microstructural characterization was conducted mainly near in a weld root region by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy. And the mechanical properties were measured with Vickers microhardness test and nanoindentation method. A steep gradient was shown in the chemical composition profile across the interface between A533 Gr. B and Alloy 152. Type-II boundaries were found in weld side of DMW and the hardness was the highest at the narrow zone between Type-II boundary and fusion boundary.
