  • An extended model for the assessment of fatigue reliability of steel structures In the presence of residual stresses Is developed. The model explicitly Includes the uncertainties of the lean stress and residual stress in terms of the zero-mean equivalent stress-range. It Is assumed that the fatigue life of welded Joints follows the Weibull distribution. Based on the numerical illustrations, It Is shown that the probability of fatigue fat lure and the allowable stress-range for fatigue design could be significantly affected by the presence of residual stresses. This effect may be represented through the mean stress at the welded joints.

  • This study investigates structural durability through the analyses of stress, fatigue life and vibration damage at bike carrier basket. As model 2 has less stress and deformation than model 1 on static structural analysis, model 2 becomes more durable than model 1. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. The amplitude deformations become highest at maximum response frequency of 2400Hz in cases of models 1 and 2. As the values of maximum equivalent stresses become within the allowable material stresses at two holes at the upper parts on models 1 and 2, these models become safe. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the design of bike carrier basket by investigating prevention and durability against fatigue or vibration damage.

  • This paper introduces a procedure for free span and fatigue analysis of offshore pipelines per DNV-RP-F105, 2002. The new method includes the axial force and deflection load in pipelines. The screening criteria were established to calculate the allowable span lengths in the new design codes. The screening criteria allows a certain amount of vortex-induced vibration due to wave and current loading. However, the induced pipe stresses are very small and usually below the limit stresess of typical S-N curves. In contrast, the conventional criteria did not allow any vortex-induced vibration in the free span of pipelines. Thus, the screening criteria yields reduced allowable span lengths. A simplified procedure was established to calculate the fatigue damage due to long-term current distribution. The long-term current statistics was assumed with a 3-parameter Weibull distribution. The fatigue damage was estimated for the span lengths obtained from the screening criteria for various conditions. Sample calculations show the effect of axial force for various boundary conditions. Comparisons with conventional criteria are included.

  • This study analyzes structural analysis with fatigue and natural frequency on ATV knuckle. The maximum equivalent stresses are happened at the end of knuckle in case of model 1, 2 and 3. As these stresses are below the allowable stress, these models can be stable structurally. The fatigue damage possibility at model 1 becomes more than model 2 and 3. Model 2 or 3 has more durability than model 1 at fatigue. As the resonances are happened at the frequency more than 2000 Hz in case of model 1, 2 and 3, there is no resonance possibilities at real driving. Prevention against damage and durability prediction on automotive chassis parts can be effectively improved by applying this study result on knuckle and improving structural strength.

  • During a construction of a road, a temporary bridge is often connected to a existing bridge. In this case, a fatigue stability problem, which was not considered in the design of the bridge, can be occurred in the main girder of the existing bridge due to the vehicle load direction change. In this study, the fatigue stability of the main girder and cantilever slab of the bridge was tested with the allowable fatigue stress of the design specifications of the road bridge. The big stress change was occurred at 55m away from the support, and the middle of the span. Furthermore, the excess of the allowable fatigue stress of the design specifications of the road bridge was confirmed at the cross section. The bridge after the reinforcement was tested for the fatigue stability, and it was confirmed that the bridge is safe.

  • Large valves for steam turbines of fossil power plants are exposed to a severe mechanical and thermal loading resulting from steam with high pressure and high temperature. Valve casings are designed to withstand such a loading. During the operation of a plant, temperatures at inner and outer surface of the casings are measured and steam flow is controlled so that the measured difference is lower than the maximum allowable value determined in the design stage. In this paper, a method is presented to calculate the maximum allowable temperature difference at the inner and outer surface of valve casings for steam turbines of fossil power plants. The finite element method is used to analyze distribution of temperature and stresses of a casing under the operating condition. Low cycle fatigue and creep rupture are taken into consideration to determine the maximum allowable temperature difference. The method can be usefully applied in the design stage of the large valves for the steam turbines, contributing to safe and reliable operation of the fossil power plants.

  • This study investigates the structural analysis result with vibration and fatigue on 3 kinds of bicycle saddle models. When the static load applies on the upper plane of model, maximum stress becomes within the allowable stress in case of model 1. As the value of Stress or deformation becomes lower on the order of model types 1, 2 and 3, these models become more stabilized or safer at durability in this order. On the vibration analysis, model type 1 has the maximum stress or deformation more than 5 times by comparing with model type 1 or 2. Model type 1 becomes most excellent on vibration durability. As maximum displacement due to vibration happens in case of model type 3, it becomes unstabilized. But the stresses of model types 1, 2 and 3 become within the allowable stress and these models are considered to be safe. At the status of the severest fatigue load, model type 3 becomes safer than model type 1 or 2. This study result is applied with the design of safe bicycle saddle and it can be useful to improve the durability by predicting prevention against the deformation due to its vibration and fatigue.

  • To overcome the large ring gear manufacturing problems seen in slewing bearings and girth gears, pin gear drive units have been developed. Among them, a novel slewing bearing with an internal pinwheel gear set (i-PGS) is introduced in this paper. First, we consider the exact cam pinion profile of i-PGS with the introduction of a profile shift coefficient. Furthermore, a new root relief profile modification for the i-PGS cam pinion is presented. Then, the contact stresses are investigated to determine the characteristics of the surface fatigue by varying the shape design parameters. The results show that the contact stresses of i-PGS can be reduced significantly by increasing the profile shift coefficient. In addition, the contact ratio, a measure of teeth overlapping action, decreases with the decrease of the allowable pressure angle.

  • In this paper, the fatigue safety in the suspension bridge is investigated by using nominal and variable stress, respectively. The technique on structural modeling and the fatigue evaluation using nominal stress are mainly dealt with in this paper. To make the finite element analysis model reflecting the actual structural behavior of the suspension bridge with cross frame, the parametric study is carried out. In this study, the influence of supporting condition. the difference of the results of 2- and 3-D analysis and the number of cross frames modelled in are considered. The nominal stress under the real traffic flow of the bridge is calculated by the combination of the stresses due to the unit DB-24 loading. The nominal stresses for details under consideration are compared with allowable stress ranges specified in the codes and the results are discussed.

  • The main functions of excavator are mainly carried out by excavator attachments such as arm and boom. These components should be designed to be light as well as durable enough because their effects on the whole structure are significant. In this paper, an optimization procedure for lightweight design considering fatigue strength for excavator attachments is presented. The weight of attachments and allowable fatigue stresses at critical areas are used as objective function and constraints, respectively, in which design variables are the thickness of the plates of attachments. The simulated annealing search method is adopted for a global optimization solution. Besides, the response surface method using the artificial neural network is used to simulate constraint function for the sake of practical fast calculation. Some example case of optimization is presented here for a sample excavator. This weight optimization is expected to contribute to a considerable improvement of fuel efficiency of excavator.
