Recently, there are much improvement in optical and mechanical properties of dental ceramic materials coupled with improved fabrication techniques, which have caused a considerable shift in the preference of the dentists to ceramic restorations. Because the chemical composition and microstructure of all-ceramic materials are different by the type, correct choice of cement type and surface treatment procedure, and cementation strategy is essential for the success of ceramic restorations with adequate retention and decreased incidence of complications. This manuscript reviews on the most often prescribed and some newly developed ceramic materials, and the selection criteria and usage guidelines of cement materials that are used in conjunction with various ceramic materials. This manuscript emphasizes that continuous updating the information of newly developed ceramic and cement materials and application techniques by the dentists and dental staffs are demanding in response to the constantly improving ceramic and cement materials and corresponding application protocol changes.
Statement of problem : The increased awareness of esthetics in dentistry has brought the esthetic consideration in prosthetic restorations . Dental ceramics offer better esthetics for use of prosthetic restorations. Unfortunately, dental ceramic materials are not always the most suitable candidate materials since their inherently brittle nature. In recent years, basic research in ceramic science has led to the recognition or several approaches to strengthen and to enhance esthetics of ceramics. Several all ceramic systems use ceramic core and porcelain build up structures . Ceramic cores influence to strength of all ceramic crowns . So the strength of ceramic cores is important to all ceramic crowns. Purpose : The purpose of this study is to estimate the flexural strength of ceramic cores in some all ceramic systems. Material and method : A biaxial flexure test was conducted on three groups(Cergo, Empress 2, In-Ceram). Each group consisted of 30 discs of nearly identical dimension with a 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm thickness and 12mm in diameter. The fracture load was recorded by Instron. Analysis of valiance(ANOVA) and Tukey's tests were performed using SAS statistical software. Results : 1.5mm thickness of specimens were significantly stronger than 0.5mm and 1.0mm thickness of specimens in Cergo and In-Ceram. But each sepecimen group of Empress 2 was no significantly strength by thickness. In order of In-Ceram, Empress 2 and Cergo has significantly stronger strength in the same thickness. Conclusion : In-Ceram is the strongest ceramic material in 3 materials. All the materials can be used according to the required characters.
Dental ceramics is well known to have excellent esthetics, biocompatibility as well as high compressive strength. However, the fragility of ceramics against tensile and shear loads leading to the delayed fracture of micro crack on ceramic surface and the backwardness of ceramic fabrication technique limit the usage of ceramic materials in dentistry. Among all ceramic materials, zirconia has been introduced to overcome the drawback of conventional dental ceramics in the field of dentistry due to the nature of zirconia featuring proper opalescence and high fracture toughness. Also, novel manufacturing techniques enable ceramic materials to prepare high esthetic anterior and posterior all ceramic system. In this paper, it is introduced and discussed that novel techniques characterizing the bond strength between zirconia core and veneering ceramics and analyzing the fluorescence of dental ceramics in order to overcome the gap between the results of basic research and the feasibility of the results in the field of dental clinics.

PURPOSE. Fractures, occlusal adjustments, or marginal corrections after removing excess composite cements result in rough surfaces of all-ceramic FPDs. These have to be polished to prevent damage of the surrounding tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the roughness of zirconia, silicate-ceramic, and composite after polish with different systems for intraoral use. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Each set of 50 plates was made of zirconia, silicate-ceramic, and composite. All plates were ground automatically and were divided into 15 groups according to the treatment. Groups Zgrit, Sgrit, and Cgrit received no further treatment. Groups Zlab and Slab received glaze-baking, and group Clab was polished with a polishing device. In the experimental groups Zv, Sv, Cv, Zk, Sk, Ck, Zb, Sb, and Cb, the specimens were polished with ceramic-polishing systems "v", "k", and "b" for intraoral use. Roughness was measured using profilometry. Statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$-procedure with the level of significance set at P=.05. RESULTS. All systems reduced the roughness of zirconia, but the differences from the controls Zgrit and Zlab were not statistically significant (P>.907). Roughness of silicate ceramic was reduced only in group Sv, but it did not differ significantly from both controls (P>.580). Groups Cv, Ck, and Cb had a significantly rougher surface than that of group Clab (P<.003). CONCLUSION. Ceramic materials can be polished with the tested systems. Polishing of interface areas between ceramic and composite material should be performed with polishing systems for zirconia first, followed by systems for veneering materials and for composite materials.
PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to examine the curing efficiency of various resin-based materials polymerized through ceramic restorations with 3 different thicknesses. Curing efficiency was evaluated by determining the surface microhardness (VHN) of the resin specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four kinds of resin materials were used. Z350 (3M ESPE $Filtek^{TM}$ Z350: A2 Shade), Z250 (3M ESPE $Filtek^{TM}$ Z250: A2 Shade) and $Variolink^{(R)}$ II (VL: Ivoclar vivadent, base: transparent) either with or without a self-curing catalyst (VLC: Ivoclar vivadent, catalyst: low viscosity/transparent) were filled into the silicone mold (10 mm diameter, 1 mm thick). They were cured through ceramic discs (IPS e.max Press MO-0 ingot ivoclar vivadent, 10 mm diameter, 0.5, 1 and 2 mm thicknesses) by LED light-curing units for 20 and 40 seconds. Vicker's microhardness numbers (VHNs) were measured on the bottom surfaces by a microhardness tester. Data were analyzed using a 3-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. The thickness of ceramic disc increased, the VHNs of all four resin types were decreased (P<.05). The mean VHN values of the resins light cured for 40 seconds were significantly higher than that of LED for 20 seconds in all four resin materials (P<.05). VLC showed significantly higher VHN values than VL regardless of other conditions (P<.05). Z350 and Z250 showed higher values than VL or VLC (P<.01). CONCLUSION. Thinner ceramic disc with increased curing time resulted higher VHN values of all resin materials. The use of a catalyst produced a greater hardness with all polymerization methods. Restorative resin materials (Z350, Z250) showed higher VHN values than resin cement materials (VL, VLC).
A new kind of 'All Ceramic Crown' could be manufactured by making improvements in the manufacturing technique for the current 'All Ceramic Crown' which does not use a special ceramic but rather a general one as a substitute. If we use the manufacturing technique for the 'All Ceramic Crown', metal coping and core are not produced. The effects of the new manufacturing technique for the 'All Ceramic Crown' are as follows: First. We do not need to use new material or special machinery or tools. Second. We can use general machinery and tools. Third. Using the basic 'All Ceramic Technique', we anticipate improvement in learning in our students. Forth. We can save effort, materials and time. Fifth. The technique also has advantages for esthetic 'temporary crown'.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ceramics have a long history in fixed prosthodontics for achieving optimal esthetics and various materials have been used to improve ceramic core strength. However, there is a lack of information on how color is affected by fabrication procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of various dentin ceramic thicknesses and repeated firings on the color of zirconium oxide all-ceramic system (LavaTM) fabricated using CAD/CAM technology. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty disc-shaped cores, 12 mm in diameter with a 1 mm thickness were fabricated from zirconium oxide based all ceramic systems ($Lava^{TM}$, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) and divided into three groups (n = 10) according to veneering with dentin ceramic thicknesses: as 0.5, 1, or 1.5 mm. Repeated firings (3, 5, 7, or 9) were performed, and the color of the specimens was compared with the color after the initial firing. Color differences among ceramic specimens were measured using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad $S{\ddot{a}}ckingen$, Germany) and data were expressed in CIELAB system coordinates. A repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc test were used to analyze the data (n = 10, ${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. $L^{\ast}a^{\ast}b^{\ast}$ values of the ceramic systems were affected by the number of firings (3, 5, 7, or 9 firings) (P<.001) and ceramic thickness (0.5, 1, or 1.5 mm) (P<.001). Significant interactions were present in $L^{\ast}a^{\ast}b^{\ast}$ values between the number of firings and ceramic thickness (P<.001). An increase in number of firings resulted in significant increase in $L^{\ast}$ values for both 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm thicknesses (P<.01, P=.013); however it decreased for 1 mm thickness (P<.01). The $a^{\ast}$ values increased for 1 mm and 1.5 mm thicknesses (P<.01), while it decreased for 0.5 mm specimens. The $b^{\ast}$ values increased significantly for all thicknesses (P<.01, P=.022). As the dentin ceramic thickness increased, significant reductions in $L^{\ast}$ values (P<.01) were recorded. There were significant increases in both $a^{\ast}$ and $b^{\ast}$ values (P<.01) as the dentin ceramic thickness increased. CONCLUSION. The number of firings and dentin ceramic thickness have a definite effect on the final color of all ceramic system tested. The mean ${\Delta}E$ value increased as the dentin ceramic thicknesses increased for zirconium-oxide based all ceramic specimens tested. However, the mean ${\Delta}E$ values were less than 3.7${\Delta}E$ units which is rated as a match in the oral environment.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture strength between the core and veneering ceramic according to 2 core materials, In-Ceram Alumina and In-Ceram Zirconia, fabricated by electro ceramic layering technique. 2 different fixed partial denture cores of three units were veneered by veneering ceramic(Ceranion, Noritake) (n=10). Methods: The fracture strengths between the core and veneering ceramic were measured through the 3 point bending test. The interfaces between the core and veneering ceramic were observed with the X-ray dot mapping of EPMA. Results: The result of fracture strength was observed that IZP group, In-Ceram Zirconia core, had higher fracture strength. IPA group, In-Ceram Alumina core, had fracture strength of 359.9(${\pm}$86.2) N. IZP group, In-Ceram Zirconia core, had fracture strength of 823.2(${\pm}$243.0) N. X-ray dot mapping observation showed that a major element in the core and veneering ceramic of IPA group was alumina and silica, respectively. No binder was observed in interfaces between the core and veneering ceramic, and no ion diffusion or transition was observed between the core and veneering ceramic. However, apparent ion diffusion or transition was observed between the core and veneering ceramic of IZP group.
PURPOSE. This study aimed to compare the effect of different surface treatments and luting agent types on the shear bond strength of two ceramics to commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti). MATERIALS AND METHODS. A total of 160 Cp Ti specimens were divided into 4 subgroups (n = 40) according to surface treatments received (control, 50 ㎛ airborne-particle abrasion, 110 ㎛ airborne-particle abrasion, and tribochemical coating). The cementation surfaces of titanium and all-ceramic specimens were treated with a universal primer. Two cubic all-ceramic discs (lithium disilicate ceramic (LDC) and zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (ZLC)) were cemented to titanium using two types of resin-based luting agents: self-cure and dual-cure (n = 10). After cementation, all specimens were subjected to 5000 cycles of thermal aging. A shear bond strength (SBS) test was conducted, and the failure mode was determined using a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA, and the Tukey-HSD test was used for post hoc comparisons (P < .05). RESULTS. Significant differences were found among the groups based on surface treatment, resin-based luting agent, and ceramic type (P < .05). Among the surface treatments, 50 ㎛ air-abrasion showed the highest SBS, while the control group showed the lowest. SBS was higher for dual-cure resin-based luting agent than self-cure luting agent. ZLC showed better SBS values than LDC. CONCLUSION. The cementation of ZLC with dual-cure resin-based luting agent showed better bonding effectiveness to commercially pure titanium treated with 50 ㎛ airborne-particle abrasion.
