The Study on of Hydrogen Production Performance by Model Biomass-supercritical Water Gasification with Various Catalysts (다양한 촉매들을 통한 모델 바이오매스-초임계수 촉매 가스화에서 수소 생산 성능에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, the model biomass was used for hydrogen production by supercritical water gasification (SCWG). Model biomasses were glycerol, glycine, lignin and cellulose. The feed concentration was set to 1 wt%. Experiments were conducted in a reactor at $440^{\circ}C$ and above 26.3 MPa for 30 min. The effects of catalysts such as alkali metal salt ($K_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$) and transition metal salts ($Ni(NO_3)_2$, $Fe(NO_3)_3$ and $Mn(NO_3)_2$) on the gasification were systematically investigated. No tar or coke was observed in all experiments. The results showed that the gasification efficiency increased with various catalysts. For the cellulose and glycerol, all catalysts were effective for the promoted $H_2$ production compared with no catalyst. The significant decrease of $H_2$ production compared with no catalyst was observed with $Na_2CO_3$ and $Fe(NO_3)_3$ for glycine and lignin. respectively. The highest H2 production, 1.24 mmol was obtained for glycerol-SCWG with $Mn(NO_3)_2$. Conclusively, the addition of $Mn(NO_3)_2$ enhanced all model biomass gasification efficiency and increased the hydrogen production promoting the supercritical water reaction.

Size Tailored Nanoparticles of ZrN Prepared by Single-Step Exothermic Chemical Route

  • ZrN nanoparticles were prepared by an exothermic reduction of $ZrCl_4$ with $NaN_3$ in the presence of NaCl flux in a nitrogen atmosphere. Using a solid-state combustion approach, we have demonstrated that the zirconium nitride nanoparticles synthesis process can be completed in only several minutes compared with a few hours for previous synthesis approaches. The chemistry of the combustion process is not complex and is based on a metathesis reaction between $ZrCl_4$ and $NaN_3$. Because of the low melting and boiling points of the raw materials it was possible to synthesize the ZrN phase at low combustion temperatures. It was shown that the combustion temperature and the size of the particles can be readily controlled by tuning the concentration of the NaCl flux. The results show that an increase in the NaCl concentration (from 2 to 13 M) results in a temperature decrease from 1280 to $750^{\circ}C$. ZrN nanoparticles have a high surface area (50-70 $m^2/g$), narrow pore size distribution, and nano-particle size between 10 and 30 nm. The activation energy, which can be extracted from the experimental combustion temperature data, is: E = 20 kcal/mol. The method reported here is self-sustaining, rapid, and can be scaled up for a large scale production of a transition metal nitride nanoparticle system (TiN, TaN, HfN, etc.) with suitable halide salts and alkali metal azide.

  • An MCL(Molten Caustic Leaching) treatment is a chemical refinery process which is used for the desulfurization and demineralization by alkali treatment. The MCL treatment removes ash by converting mineral like Si, Fe, V, Ni etc. in petroleum cokes into soluble salts. The MCL has an advantage minimizing carbon loss in comparison to other desulfurization process. Reaction variables for the desulfurization and demineralization in the study were leaching temperature, leaching time, ratio of caustic to cokes, acid concentration and time for washing, and particle size. At the optimum condition, above 99% of desulfurization and about 90% of demineralization was obtained. FT-IR and SEM analysis showed that the structure and surface of the particle was closely related with the degree of sulfur and ash removal, and leaching temperature as well.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/gelatin(GEL) blend membranes were prepared under a high electric field, and their swelling and ion permeation behaviors were investigated. For alkali metal salts such as LiCl, NaCl and KCl, the permeability coefficients were increased until the electric field of 10 kV due to the decreased tortuosity, whereas they were decreased over 10 kV owing to the increase of the degree of crystallinity. The swelling ratios of the blend membranes showed the minimum values at pH 6, while the permeability coefficients exhibited the maximum values at the same condition. The minimum swelling ratios result from the repulsion effect between charged groups in acidic or basic regions, and the maximum permeabilities result from Donnan exclusion effect in the same regions. Especially, the per-meability coefficient for KCl of the membrane increased steeply to five times at $40^{\circ}C$ than below $35^{\circ}C$.

  • 1. Isolation and identification of amylase-producing bacteria. The powerful strain A-12 and S-8 were respectively isolated from air and soil after screening a large number of amylase-producing bacteria. Their bacterial characteristics have been investigated and it has been found that all characteristics of strain A-12 and S-8 are similar to Bac. subtilis of Bergey's manual except for the acid formation from a few carbohydrates and the citrate utilization, i.e., the strain A-12 shows negative in the citrate utilization, and the acid formation from arabinose and xylose, S-8 shows negative in the acid formation from xylose. 2. Amylase production by Liquid cultures with solid materials. Several conditions for amylase production by strain A-12 in stationary cultures have been studied. The results obtained are as follows. (1) The optimum conditions are:temperature $35^{\circ}C$, initial pH 6.5 to 7.0 and incubation time 3 to 4 days. (2) The amylase production is not affected by the preservation period of the stock cultures. (3) Among the various solid material, the defatted soy bean is found to be the best for t1e amylase production. However, the alkali treatment of the defatted soy bean gives no effect contrary to the cage of defatted rape seed. The addition of soluble starch to the alkali extract of defatted soy bean shows the increased amylase production. (4) Up to 1% addition of ethanol to carbon dificient media gives the improved amylase production, whereas the above effect is not found in the case of carbon rich media. (5) The amylase production can be increased 2.5 times when 10% of defatted soy bean is admixed to cheaply available wheat bran. (6) The excellent effect is found for amylase production when 20% of wheat bran is admixed to defatted dry milk which is a poor medium. The activity is found to be $D^{40^{\circ}}_{30'}$ 7,000(L.S.V. 1,800) in 10% medium. (7) No significant effect is observed due to the addition of various inorganic salts. 3. Amylase production by solid cultures. Several conditions for amylase production by strain A-12 in wheat bran cultures have been studied and the results obtained are as follows. (1) The optimum conditions: are temperature $33^{\circ}C$, incubation lime 2 days, water content added 150 to 175% and the thickness of the medium 1.5cm, The activity is found to be $D^{40^{\circ}}_{30'}$ 36,000(L.S.V. 15,000) (2) No significant effect is found in the case of the additions of various organic and inorganic substances.

Physical and Chemical Properties of Coal Fly Ash Ball Substrates, the Salt Accumulation and the Effects of Washing Out Salt with Water (석탄회성형배지(Ash Ball)의 이화학적 특성과 염류집적 및 제거효과)

  • Physical and chemical properties, the salt accumulation and leaching of salt by water of coal fly ash ball (ash ball) were evaluated in comparison with perlite and granule rockwool (rockwool). Bulk density, particle density, solid phase, and porosity of ash ball were 0.93 g.cm$^{-3}$ , 2.29 g.cm$^{-3}$ , 40.6%, 59.4%, respectively. The bulk density of ash ball was greater, while porosity was smaller, than that of perlite and rockwool. Saturation moisture capacity was 52% in ash ball, 71% in perlite, and 90% in rockwool. Water contents after drainage for 1 hr of ash ball, perlite, and rockwool were 21%, 27%, and 80%, respectively. Water content of small granules (3-5 mm) of ash ball was 5% greater than that of large (7-15 mm) grannules. The ash ball was a weak alkali substrate with pH 7.6, but not electric conductivity (EC), of the nutrient solution supplied to ash ball slightly increased. When the absorption of mineral ions to substrates were analyzed, ash ball and RW absorbed mainly PO ̄$_4$. On tomato culture, salt accumulation in ash ball substrate was similar to that in perlite. Most of the salts in the ash balls were removed by submerging the substrate eight times in distilled water. It is concluded that water holding capacity of ash ball substrate was lo as compared to other substrates, but air permeability, and water diffusion was excellent, making control of medium water content easy.

A study on removal effect of Endosulfan in soil and aquatic system (수질 및 토양 중 Endosulfan 제거효과에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, a series of experiments were conducted using a standard solution containing ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$-endosulfan to follow the removal effect of residual pesticides on soil and aqueous solution. An analytical method for residual pesticides was established by a gas chromatography equipped Ultra II[$(30m{\times}0.25mm(ID){\times}0.25{\mu}m$] capillary column and a ${\mu}$-electron capture detector(${\mu}$-ECD). Recovery rates of residual pesticides for soil samples were 96-100%. The amount of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$-endosulfan that was spread in the soil was checked for various period of time. It indicated that the amount was reduced to 73 and 61%, respectively. When the water spread amount increased from 10 to 100 mL, ${\alpha}$-endosulfan was eliminated from 45 to 85% and while ${\beta}$-endosulfan from 44 to 88%. Removal rates of ${\alpha}$-endosulfan and ${\beta}$-endosulfan were 99% and 98% respectively within 30 minutes. It was assumed that the organic salts and strong alkali elements contained in the pesticide degradator hydrolyzed the residual pesticide.

Inhibitory Substance on the Snake Venoms Produced by Penicillium sp. (사독의 조해물질에 관한 연구)

  • One strain of Penicillium sp. (175-66-B), isolated from soil, was able to produce a substance that has a strong inibition activity against the Agkistrodon and Trimeresurus venoms. In this experiment, the chemical and biological properties of the sample were investigated. As an inhibitory substance, it was effective to the proteinase, hemorrhagic and lethal factors of Agkistrodon and Trimeresurus venoms, and also effective to several fractions of the proteinases and hemorrhagic factors of Agkistrodon halys blomhoffi venom. Moreover, in the addition of prednisotone, it was more effective for the cure of the mouse envenomated with the venom amount of two fold of MLD$_{100}$. This substance was very stable to the acid, alkali and heat. Its melting point was high enough to sublime at 222$^{\circ}C$ without any decomposition. This sample was easily dissolved only in hot water, but not in several organic solvents except for a little dissolution in elate. It did not have the chelating activity. It had very strong specificity to the snake venoms. but its activity was depressed by the addition of zinc or cupric salts. This sample had no acute toxicity to the mouse. Its chemical formula was $C_{16}$ $H_{12}$$N_2$ $O_{10}$ with the molecular weight of about 392. It has two epoxy groups and four carboxyl radicals, but amino, nitrite and nitrate radicals, unsaturated bonds and aromatic ring were not detected.   • Sucrose, glucose, starches hydrolyzates and raw starchy materials hydrolyzates were caramelized using various catalysis and the caramel products were analysed, in order to carry out the basic research for the replacement of caramel coloring. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The caramel which was manufactured by sucrose syrup being pH 3.5 adjusted by sulfuric acid showed strong color intensity and hue as well as good stability in the solutions of table salt, tannin and alcohol. 2. The product caramelized from sucrose syrup being pH 9.5 adjusted by sodium carbonate showed very strong color intensity and black color component, and was quite stable in alcohol solution but not in table salt and tannin solutions. 3. The caramel products made from sucrose syrup using ammonium salts of strong acid like $NH_4Cl$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ as catalyst showed strong color intensity and black color component but hazy apparence in solution of table salt, tannin and alcohol. 4. The product caramelized from glucose syrup being pH 9.5 adjusted by sodium carbonate indicated strong color intensity but weak red color component and was transparent in solution of table salt and alcohol but hazy in tannin solution. 5. In glucose caramel using $NH_4Cl$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ as catalyst, $NH_4Cl$ plot was very weak in color intensity and insufficient in red color component but stable in solution of table salt, tannin and alcohol. In the case of $(NH_4)_2CO_3$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ plots, all products were strong in color intensity but little insufficient in red color component. On the stability in solutions, $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ plot was stable in two solutions expect tannin solution, $(NH_4)_2CO_3$ plot was only stable in alcohol solution and $(NH_4)_2SO_3$ plot was only stable in table salt solution. 6. When the acid hydrolyzed starch syrups without neutralization were caramelized using $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ as catalyst, the potato starch hydrolyzate caramel showed higher in color intensity being similar to its of glucose caramel than sweet potato starch hydrolyzate caramel and corn starch hydrolyzate caramel. 7. Dried sweet potato powder, dried acorns powders, the acorns (from Q. serrata THUNB and Q. acutissima CARR.) powders extracted with water for 7 days and with 50% alcohol solution for 24 hrs were hydrolyzed by sulfuric acid in autoclave at $3.5kg/cm^2$ as pressure for 60 mins, and were caramelized using $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ as catalyst. It was supposed that all of those products were poor quality on color and stability in solutions at the viewpoint of food coloring matter.
