Silvetia siliquosa is an ecologically and commercially important brown alga that is harvested from its natural habitats, but its population has recently been diminishing along the Korean coast. To develop new techniques for algal population restoration, we tested two newly developed transplantation methods (using polyethylene ropes and natural rock pieces) at two study sites, Gwanmaedo and Yeongsando, on the southwest coast of Korea, from May to November 2014. The transplants on polyethylene ropes showed significantly greater survival, maturity, and growth than those on natural rocks at both study sites. Newly recruited juveniles (<3 cm) of S. siliquosa increased remarkably from May to December near the transplants on polyethylene ropes and natural rocks. Therefore, we suggest that transplantation using polyethylene ropes is more effective than using natural rocks to restore the population of S. siliquosa in Korea.
Microalgae are considered as superior biodiesel producers, because they could effectively produce high amount of lipid with fast growth rate. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to various light wavelengths (${\lambda}_{max}$ 470 nm, ${\lambda}_{max}$ 525 nm, and ${\lambda}_{max}$ 660 nm) using light emitting diodes (LEDs) to examine effect of light quality on their growth and fatty acid production in 0.4-L bubble column photobioreactors. Fluorescent lamps were also used as polychromatic light sources (control). From the results, biomass productivity was varied by light wavelength from 0.05 g/L/day to 0.30 g/L/day. Maximum biomass productivity was obtained from red LED among tested ones. We also observed that contents of oleic acid and linolenic acid, which affect biodiesel properties, were significantly changed depending on supplied wavelength. These results indicated that production of algal biomass, and fatty acid content and productivity could be improved or controlled by supplying specific light wavelength.

Ocean acidification and warming, identified as environmental concerns likely to be affected by climate change, are crucial determinants of algal growth. The ichthyotoxic raphidophytes Chattonella species are responsible for huge economic losses and environmental impact worldwide. In this study, we investigated the impact of CO2 on the thermal performance curves (TPCs) of Chattonella marina and Chattonella ovata grown under temperatures ranging from 13 to 34℃ under ambient pCO2 (350 μatm) and elevated pCO2 (950 μatm). TPCs were comparable between the species or even between pCO2 levels. With the exception of the critical thermal minimum (CTmin) for C. ovata, CTmin for C. marina and the thermal optimum (Topt) and critical thermal maximum (CTmax) for both species did not change with elevation of pCO2 levels. While CO2 enrichment increased the maximum photosynthetic rates (Pmax) up to 125% at the Totp of 30℃, specific growth rates were not significantly different under elevated pCO2 for the two species. Overall, C. ovata is likely to benefit from climate change, potentially widening its range of thermal tolerance limit in highly acidic waters and contributing to prolonged phenology of future phytoplankton assemblages in coastal waters.
Effects of various concentrations of copper on growth change of blue-greenalgae Anabaena flos-aquae were studied. There was significant differences among cultures treated with various concentrations of copper in growth of algae with parameters of cell numbers, specific growth rate (SGR) and chlorophyll contents. Algal growth and SGR were inhibited on by effect of various concentrations of copper more than without copper (ANOVA, F=34.69 p<0.001, F=114.89, p<0.001). The SGRs of various concentrations of copper in media were higher than without copper on 8 days after copper treated. The mean of chlorophyll contents was 1.978 ${\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ and 1.648 ${\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$, respectively, while those of algae in culture without copper was 3.179 ${\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ (ANOVA, F=153.74, p<0.001). The cellular morphology was different between media of which copper treated and without copper. The colony of algae in media which copper treated was shorter than without copper. Effects of various concentrations of copper on growth change of blue-green-algae Anabaena flos-aquae occured variety changes of parameters of cell numbers, specific growth rate (SGR), chlorophyll contents and cellular morphology on growth of algae.

To explore the interactions between the mixotrophic dinoflagellate Biecheleria cincta (previously Woloszynskia cincta) and heterotrophic protists, we investigated whether the common heterotrophic dinoflagellates Gyrodinium dominans, Gyrodinium moestrupii, Gyrodinium spirale, Oxyrrhis marina, and Polykrikos kofoidii, and the ciliate Strobilidium sp. were able to feed on B. cincta. We also measured growth and ingestion rates of O. marina and Strobilidium sp. on B. cincta as a function of prey concentration. In addition, these rates were measured for other predators at single prey concentrations at which the growth and ingestion rates of O. marina and Strobilidium sp. were saturated. All grazers tested in the present study were able to feed on B. cincta. B. cincta clearly supported positive growth of O. marina, G. dominans, and Strobilidium sp., but it did not support that of G. moestrupii, G. spirale, and P. kofoidii. The maximum growth rates of Strobilidium sp. and O. marina on B. cincta (0.91 and 0.49 $d^{-1}$, respectively) were much higher than that of G. dominans (0.07 $d^{-1}$). With increasing the mean prey concentration, the specific growth rates of O. marina and Strobilidium sp. on B. cincta increased, but either became saturated or slowly increased. The maximum ingestion rate of Strobilidium sp. (1.60 ng C $predator^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) was much higher than that of P. kofoidii and O. marina (0.55 and 0.34 ng C $predator^{-1}\;d^{-1}$) on B. cincta. The results of the present study suggest that O. marina and Strobilidium sp. are effective protistan grazers of B. cincta.
The population and kinds of algae causing the waterbloom on the rice seedling bed and the damage of young rice plant by the nuisance green phytoplanktonic algae in rice field were studied to find out the efficiency of fertilizers and the effect of methods of fertilizers application in the rice field, laboratory, pot and green house. pot and green house. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. In the rice seedling bed, the kinds of algae causing waterblooms were identified mainly photosynthetic bluegreen algae as the Anabaena, Ulothrix and Oscillatoria spp. in reclaimed saline soil. Micromonospora, Oscillatoria, and Chlamydomonas spp. were habitated mainly in plain. Whereas, Spyrogyra, Oscillatoria and Navicula spp. were identified mainly in mauntainous area. 2. In the rice field, the nuisance phytoplanktonic green algae were identified mainly Scenedesmus, Chlamidospora, and Micromonospora spp. in Gimjae plain, in Namweon mountainous area and Gangjin costal plain, respectively. 3. The algal biomass has been havily habitated in which rice field were constituted with high pH value and high concentration of $NH^+_4-N$ and $NO^-_3-N$ in surface water and in soil with the optimum temperature for the algal growth ($22-30^{\circ}C$). 4. In the laboratory experiment, maximum algal biomass were obtained at levels of 80 ppm for the nitrogen and 20 ppm for the phosphorus. And were obtained of the levels of 40 ppm in the case of joint application of N and $P_2O_5$. 5. From the pot experiment, compare of the control plot, an addition of nitrogen alone or nitrogen+phosphorus enhanced algal biomass while the phosphorus alone did not. 6. Surface application of fertilizer was remarkably increased of algal biomass than did the whole layer or deep layer application.
This study was conducted to know that if ionic liquids can be applicable as control agents of harmful algae in water-ecosystem and to find out problems caused by ionic liquid application. Firstly, the differential selectivity of various fresh-water algal species to several 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids was investigated. There was a distinct differential response between alkyl chain lengths from butyl to dodecyl and towards the algal organisms : Generally algicidal activity was increased with increase of chain length and among the algae used in this study, Stephanodiscus hantzschii f. tenuis, Oscillatoria tenuis and Spirulina pratensis were most sensitive to 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (MAIC12), next was Microcystis aeruginosa, and the others were relatively less sensitive to the chemical. The selectivity degree was about ten to twenty times based on the $EC_{80}$ (Effective concentration required for 80% growth inhibition). Secondly, an activity persistence of ionic liquids was investigated in natural mimic condition (using water bottle containing soil-sediments under the greenhouse condition). At the application of $1.0{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (MAIC8), the algal growth did not occur at all until 6 days after treatment(DAT) and observed a only little growth at 9 DAT. But the algae grew rapidly after 9 DAT. So at 20 DAT, total chlorophylls was $264.4{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and the growth was inhibited by 58.2% compared to untreatment. On the other hand, MAIC12 also had a similar persistence pattern to MAIC8, showing nearly 5 times more activity than MAIC8. At 20 days after $0.2{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ application of MAIC12, that is, total chlorophylls was $251.2{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and the growth was inhibited by 55.2% compared to untreatment. In summary, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquids is likely to be applicable for selective control of harmful algae as potent compounds having long lasting activity. However, the difficulty of degradation seems to be a limiting factor in an eco-friendly application of the compounds.
To investigate the cellular growth traits of a photosynthetic green algae, Chlorella pyrenoidosa, several tests upon a culture temperature, a culture time, the influence of nutrient and the intensity of illumination were executed. Using growth chamber, some optimal conditions for the culture of algae were as follows: The culture temperature was about $28^{\circ}C$, the culture time about 4 days, and the cellular growth of algae was in proportioned to the concentration of nutrient such as nutrient broth. And the more the intensity of illumination was increased, the more the algal cell showed good growth. And then, the activity of enzyme degrading acetaldehyde was also studied using HPLC from the same strain. This enzyme was dependent on $\beta$-$NAD^+$. And showed its optimal pH around on 9.0, and also its optimal temperature around at $40^{\circ}C$. The operational conditions of HPLC were as follows: Column, ODS-Hypersil ; mobile phase, 50% (v/v) acetonitrile.
Pilot scale system was designed to identify the growth and movement of algae, depending on environmental changes(retention time, nutrient concentration, etc) in Gangjeong-Goryeong Weir of the Nakdong River. Considering the stability of algal culture and easy observation of algal growth, pilot scale system was made of transparent acrylic material(3 sets of flexible cylindrical water tanks with 1 m diameter and 4 m height). Auxiliary equipments include light intercepter, water inflow device for different water depth and storage of reclaimed water. The retention time was 2 days(before construction of weir; treatment 1), 8 days(after construction of weir, 2013; treatment 2) and 30 days(2014; treatment 3). According to the water temperature of treatment 1 were similar by depth, treatment 3 showed a difference between the surface(0 m) and bottom(4 m) more than $3^{\circ}C$. DO, pH showed relatively high in the surface than the bottom. Nutrients showed eutrophic condition in all experiments. The Chlrophyll-a concentration of the treatment 1 showed a relatively lower value than the Chlrophyll-a concentration of the treatment 2 and 3. Therefore, the retention time was considered to influence the growth of phytoplankton.

Objectives Tricalcium phosphate and calcium hydrogenorthophosphate are high production volume chemicals, mainly used as foodstuff additives, pharmaceuticals, lubricants, synthetic resin, and disinfectants. Phosphate has the potential to cause increased algal growth leading to eutrophication in the aquatic environment. However, there is no adequate information available on risk assessment or acute and chronic toxicity. The aim of this research is to evaluate the toxic potential of phosphate compounds in the aquatic environment. Methods An aquatic toxicity test of phosphate was conducted, and its physico-chemical properties were obtained from a database recommended in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) guidance manual. An ecotoxicity test using fish, Daphnia, and algae was conducted by the good laboratory practice facility according to the OECD TG guidelines for testing of chemicals, to secure reliable data. Results The results of the ecotoxicity tests of tricalcium phosphate and calcium hydrogenorthophosphate are as follows: In an acute toxicity test with Oryzias latipes, 96 hr 50% lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) was >100 (measured:>2.14) mg/L and >100 (measured: >13.5) mg/L, respectively. In the Daphnia test, 48 hr 50% effective concentration ($EC_{50}$) was >100 (measured: >5.35) mg/L and >100 (measured: >2.9) mg/L, respectively. In a growth inhibition test with Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, 72 hr $EC_{50}$ was >100 (measured: >1.56) mg/L and >100 (measured: >4.4) mg/L, respectively. Conclusions Based on the results of the ecotoxicity test of phosphate using fish, Daphnia, and algae, $L(E)C_{50}$ was above 100 mg/L (nominal), indicating no toxicity. In general, the total phosphorus concentration including phosphate in rivers and lakes reaches levels of several ppm, suggesting that phosphate has no toxic effects. However, excessive inflow of phosphate into aquatic ecosystems has the potential to cause eutrophication due to algal growth.
