  • Floating debris provides substrates for dispersal of organisms by ocean currents, including algae that thrive on plastics. The 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Tohuku, Japan resulted in large amounts of debris carried by the North Pacific Current to North America from 2012 to 2016. In 2015-2016, the plastics in the debris bore a complex biota including pink algal crusts. One sample (JAW4874) was isolated into culture and a three-gene phylogeny (psbA, rbcL, and SSU) indicated it was an unknown member of the red algal class Stylonematophyceae. It is a small pulvinate crust of radiating, branched, uniseriate filaments with cells containing a single centrally suspended nucleus and a single purple to pink, multi-lobed, parietal plastid lacking a pyrenoid. Cells can be released as spores that attach and germinate to form straight filaments by transverse apical cell divisions, and subsequent longitudinal and oblique intercalary divisions produce masses of lateral branches. This alga is named Tsunamia transpacifica gen. nov. et sp. nov. Sequencing of additional samples of red algal crusts on plastics revealed another undescribed Stylonematophycean species, suggesting that these algae may be frequent on drift oceanic plastics.

  • To grasp the algal vegetation using the occurred species number, biomass and dominant species, this study was performed in the subtidal zone of Muan-gun, in the intertidal zone of Jindo-gun and in the intertidal zone and subtidal zone of Geomundo, the south-eastern coast of Jeollanamdo, Korea in the spring 2014. The total occurred species was 140 ones including 10 chlorophytes(7.14%), 54 phaeophytes(38.57%) and 76 rhodophytes(54.29%); the biomass was $70,484g{\cdot}w{\cdot}w/m^2$ in total. The flora charateristic using R/P ratio, geographical distribution pattern of algae, at the Station 9-1(intertidal zone) in Geomundo was tropical; the flora at the Station 6 (Maengseong-ri, Sanjodo, Jindo-gun) and the Station 9-2(subtidal zone) in Geomundo were mixed; the others were arctic to temperate. The physiognomic types were also shown. Each species was classified into six functional-form groups, and two ecological state groups(ESG) were evaluated based on these groups. The coarsely branched-group of functional-form groups was 44% of total occurred species. The ESG II in all study sites was high, and this is maybe due to the environmental stress such as pollution and disturbance, etc.

  • In the course of survey of marine algal flora in Korea, a red algal species was collected from Pohang located in the eastern coast of Korea. This shares features of Hypnea, and is characterized by more or less percurrent axis and numerous and short branchlets densely covering axis and branches with basal constrictions, and absence of lenticular thickenings in medullary cell walls. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, this species nests in the same clade as Hypnea esperi. Genetic distance between this Korean entity and H. esperi was in intraspecific range as 0.6%. This alga is identified as Hypnea esperi based on the morphological and molecular data. This is the first record of H. esperi in Korea.

  • The present study summarizes the occurrence, distribution and autecology of 12 taxa of the class Cyanophyceae collected from several swamps, reservoir and highland wetlands in South Korea from 2009 to 2012. A new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 taxa of blue-green algae newly recorded are described and illustrated. Anabaena koreana is similar to A. oumiana, A. spiroides and A. crassa in that the trichomes form regular coils. However, A. koreana is distinguished from these three species by the morphological characteristics of the vegetative cell, heterocyst, and akinet shape and size. This study considers 12 blue-green algal species, including a new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 species that are recorded for the first time in the Korean freshwater algal flora. Among them, the genus Nostochopsis Wood ex Bornet et Flahault 1886 had not previously been recorded in Korea.

  • Morphological and molecular information of two marine algae collected from Korea is given. One belonging to a green alga, is characterized by small size up to 4 cm high, much branched thalli on all sides, slender and linear branchlets which is constricted near base, axes without prominent branch scars, chloroplasts with a prominent central pyrenoid. The other, as a brown alga, is distinct from other Korean species in having cylindrical elevated projections at all parts of thallus axis, leaves with slightly serrulate margin together with distinct midrib bearing spines and absence to rarely occurred vesicles. In phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, these two species are nested in the same clade with Bryopsis triploramosa and Sargassum polyporum, respectively. In this study, these two species are newly recorded in the Korean marine algal flora based on the morphological and molecular data.

  • Laurencia is a red algal genus that was described by J.V. Lamouroux in 1813. The main characteristics of this genus have been known as the presence of four pericentral cells in an axial segment, secondary pit connections between adjacent epidermal cells, and the presence of corps en cerise in both epidermal and trichoblast cells. Additionally, the tetrasporangia are arranged in a parallel manner, and male branches feature terminal cup-shaped spermatangial pits. Currently, sixteen Korean Laurencia species have been reported based on their morphological characteristics. In this study, Laurencia decussata and L. pacifica have been added as new records to the Korean algal flora based on a combination of morphological observations and molecular analyses of rbcL sequences. Laurencia decussata has expanded from Australia and New Zealand to Korea, while the distribution of L. pacifica has expanded from USA and Mexico to Korea.
