  • The red alga Compsopogon caeruleus can generally be found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. In addition to its natural habitats, this species may be found in waters that receive abnormally hot water, e.g., from powerhouses. To date, the presence of C. caeruleus has not been observed in thermally polluted lacustrine ecosystems in Poland, which has a moderate climate. The thalli of this red alga were found growing on Vallisneria spiralis in Lichenskie Lake. Importantly, this paper presents a previously unknown relationship between the temperature (20, 25, 30, 35, and 40℃) and oxygen requirements of C. caeruleus (based on ex situ measurements of O2 consumption by thalli). Surprisingly, 35℃ can be the optimum temperature for C. caeruleus, and this temperature is higher than the values reported by some previous thermal analyses by approximately 10℃. Additionally, we reviewed and mapped the distribution of this nonnative and mesophilic red alga in natural / seminatural water ecosystems in Europe. Finally, we propose that the occurrence of C. caeruleus mature thalli can be a novel, simple and easy-to-recognize bioindicator of artificially and permanently heated waters in moderate climate zones by a regular discharge of postindustrial water.

  • A marine brown alga was collected from Geoje, located on the southern coast of Korea. This species shares the generic features of Dictyota and is morphologically characterized by the combined features of erect or prostrate thallus with smooth margin, dichotomous to subdichotomous branches not twisted at the terminal part, absence of surface proliferations, 1-3 cell layered cortex and unilayered medulla, and lack of involucrum in sporangia subtended by a single stalk cell. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, this species nests in the same clade with Dictyota bartayresiana. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was calculated as 1.2%, considered to be within the intra-species range for the genus. Based on these morphological and molecular analyses, this Korean alga is identified as D. bartayresiana described originally from the West Indies. This is the first record of D. bartayresiana in Korea.

  • A series of bromophenols and corresponding debrominated phenolic compounds was prepared by isolation from red alga Tichocarpus crinitus and by structural modification of natural bromophenols. Their structures were determined by extensive NMR analysis and the antioxidant activities were established through the determination of their abilities to inhibit free radicals using DPPH as the stable radical. The most active free radical scavengers were the debrominated phenolic derivatives 3,4-dihydroxybenzyl alcohol and 3,3',4,4'-tetrahydroxydiphenylmethane.

  • A monoacyldigalactosyl glycerol was isolated from the $CH_2Cl_2$ soluble fraction of the MeOH extract from the green alga Enteromorpha prolifera. The structure was established as $1-O-palmitoyl-3-O-[{\alpha}-D-galactopyranosyl(1{\rightarrow}6)-{\beta}-D-galactopyranosyl]-sn-glycerol$ (1) by chemical and spectroscopic methods.

  • Ecklonia stolonifera Okamura is a member of the family Laminariaceae, belonging to the order Laminariales. Previously we reported that the methanolic extract of the brown alga E stolonifera exerts antioxidative activity on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. In the course of a continuous study on the active principles of this alga, a new phlorotannin, named eckstolonol (2), was isolated along with the four known phlorotannins i.e. (omitted)

  • An acid polysaccharide (SFP), was extracted from alga Sargassum fusiforme in hot water, was purified by ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. The PC, chemical analysis, electrophoresis and IR of SFP indicated that it was a kind of alginate with a mol. wt. of 13,000 and a molar ratio of mannuronic acid to guluronic acid 2.75. Pharmacological tests showed that SFP could prolong the survival duration of mice suffering from ascitic Sarcoma 180 with a rate of life prolongation of 63.44%.

  • As part of search for new biologically active substances from marine organism, we have isolated a glyecrol glycoside from the marine red alga Gracilaria verrucosa. The structure of the glycerol glycoside was elucidated as 2-O-${\alpha}-_D$-galactopyranosylglycerol[floridoside(4)] on the basis of spectroscopic and physicochemical evidences.

  • Mechanisms of competition between two canopy algae and an understory alga were investigated by a field manipulative experiment using artificial thalli. The study was carried out in the upper intertidal zone at Nudibranch Point in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, where two fucoids, Fucus gardneri and Pelvetiopsis limitata, and a turf red alga, Mazzaella cornucopiae, were dominant in the algal community. The experiment was designed to test three hypotheses, shading, whiplash, and allelopathy, imposed by potential fucoid effects on M. cornucopiae. Only the shading effect was significant, indicating that adult fucoid thalli reduced. M. cornucopiae biomass underneath the fucoids. Results indicated that reversal of competitive dominance existed between F. gardneri and M. cornucopiae depending on the life history stage of the competitors. By including the turf alga's effects on the fucoids, the well-balanced and non-hierarchical interaction networks among the major macroalgae support the high likelihood of species coexistence in the community.

  • A Gram (-), rod-shaped bacterium in size of 1.6-2.8 $\times$ 0.4 μm was isolated from a eutrophic reservoir, which exhibited growth-inhibiting effect against a bluegreen alga (Anabaena cylindrica). This isolate showed positive reactions for catalase and oxidase, and optimal conditions of 35-40°C and pH 9.0. This isolate was designated AC-1 in this manuscript. In a mixed-culture of A. cylindrica and AC-1, their growth patterns were inversely correlated and the bluegreen algal vegetative cells completely disappeared within 24-36 hours. AC-1 showed similar lytic activity in natural water as in an artificial medium. The lytic activity of AC-1 was dependent on the photosynthetic activity of A. cylindrica. When observed under phase contrast microscope, the isolate lysed vegetative cells of A. cylindrica in scattered state in a liquid medium, whereas heterocysts have not been lysed.

  • A marine red algal species was collected from Uljin, located on the eastern coast of Korea, during a survey of marine algal flora. This alga shares the generic features of Plocamium, and is characterized by linear, flat and thin thalli with narrow axes, branches developing in alternating pairs from margins of the axes, two to four times alternately pinnately branching, linear or occasionally adaxially curved lowermost branchlets and distinctly and compactly clustered stichidia. In a phylogenetic tree based on rbcL sequences, the Korean alga nests in the same clade as P. serrulatum. The genetic distance between both sequences within the clade was calculated as 0.0-0.2%. Based on the morphological and molecular data, this Korean species is identified as P. serrulatum described originally from Taiwan. This is the first record of P. serrulatum in Korean marine algal flora.
