  • Multi-wire busbar-type bifacial n-type Si solar cells have been used for the fabrication of monofacial and bifacial photovoltaic (PV) module, where bifacial module was equipped with transparent backsheet while monofacial module was prepared using white backsheet. The comparison of six-day accumulated power production obtained from outdoor test under gray cement ground conditions using 60cell monofacial and bifacial PV modules suggested the bifacial gain of over 20% could be achieved. Furthermore, the outdoor evaluation tests of bifacial modules with different ground conditions such as cement (reference), green paint, white paint and green artificial grass, were performed. It turned out white paint showed the best albedo and thus the highest power production, while green paint and artificial grass showed less power generation than cement ground.

  • The particle depolarization ratios were retrieved from the observation with a multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Gwangju, Korea ($35.11^{\circ}N$, $126.54^{\circ}E$). The measurements were carried out on 24 February and 9 March 2004. Using the particle depolarization ratios, the non-dust aerosol particles were distinguished from the Asian dust plume, and the proportion of the non-dust particle to total dust plume was retrieved. The calculated proportion of the non-dust particle was used for the retrieval of backscatter coefficients at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and extinction coefficients at 355 and 532 nm of non-dust particles in the dust plume. Microphysical parameters of non-dust particles including single-scattering albedo at 532 nm were retrieved using retrieved optical values. The retrieved single-scattering albedo of non-dust particles was 0.92~0.95 below 1 km height and 0.82~0.91 above 1 km height on 24 February 2004 and $0.81{\pm}0.03$ on 9 March 2004.

  • It has been speculated that there could be dormant or extinct comets in the list of known asteroids, which appear asteroidal but are icy bodies originating from outer solar system. However, little is known about the existence of such objects not only because of their complicated chaotic orbits but also because of the limited physical and chemical information. AKARI infrared space mission gave us brand-new albedo catalog of Near Earth Objects, which clues in a better understanding of dark asteroids using both albedo data and dynamical models could be possible. Dark Asteroids with low () albedos are thought to be dormant or extinct comet candidates due to its similar albedo values with comet nucleus. In addition to this, dynamical models indicate that candidate cometary objects have Tisserand parameter. Based on both observational and dynamical criteria, we obtained 196 dark asteroids lists. We numerically integrated backward their orbits using the N-body code Mercury6 (Chambers 1999) during 10 million years to track the past orbits of bodies. We picked out 14 comet candidates that show abnormal orbits in the past by analyzing orbital elements among 196 candidates. From the dynamical evolution simulations, we finally obtained 3 most-likely comet candidates; 944Hidalgo,2006QL39,andP/SidingSpring.Twoofthemareconsistent with past research; P/Siding Spring is a known comet and 944 Hidalgo is a most-likely comet candidate in asteroid populations. Since they all have stable orbits in nowadays although they have unstable orbit in the past, we could conclude that they may be not active comets but dormant or extinct comets.

  • In order to clarify the impact of anti-heat insulation pavement on the thermal structure of atmospheric boundary layer, field experiments and numerical simulations were carried out. Field experiment with various pavements were also conducted for 24 hours from 09LST 19 June 2007. And numerical experiment mainly focused on the impact of albedo variation, which is strongly associated with thermal characteristics of insulated pavement materials, on the temporal variation of planterly boundary layer. Numerical model used in this study is one dimension model with Planterly Boundary Layer developed by Oregon State University (OSUPBL). Because anti-heat insulation pavement material shows higher albedo value, not only maximum surface temperature but also maximum surface air temperature on anti-heat insulation pavement is lower than that on asphalt. The maximum value of surface temperature only reach on $49.5^{\circ}C$. As results of numerical simulations, surface sensible heat flux and the height of mixing layer are also influenced by the values of albedo. Therefore the characteristics of urban surface material and its impact on atmosphere should be clarified before the urban planning including improvement of urban heat environment and air quality.

  • It is considered that comets near the ecliptic plane have been injected into inner solar system from Kuiper-belt. Some of them are still active while others are dormant with no detectable tails and comae. These dormant comets have eccentric and/or inclined orbits, which are parameterized by Tisserand parameter TJ<3. In addition, dormant comets can be differentiated from asteroids based on the albedo, because they have low albedo (the geometrical albedos pv<0.1). The conditions of TJ<3 and pv<0.1 have been used as a criteria to discriminate dormant comets from asteroids. However, we must be more careful because there are 'contaminations' from the outer region, i.e. Jovian Trojans (5.05

  • Using Fresnel reflection and Hapke BRDF model with Apollo 10084 soil sample's scattering properties, we constructed a real scale optical lunar model and used it to simulate lunar apparent albedo and moonshine. For Fresnel reflection, the refractive index of $1.68{\pm}0.5$ was used. For Hapke BRDF parameters from BUGs BRDF measurement, the single scattering with w=0.33, hot spot width h=0.017, average phase angle ${\zeta}$=-0.086 and Legendre polynomial coefficients b=0.308, c=0.425 in wavelength 700nm with two types of Henyey-Greenstein phase function was applied. The computation model includes the Sun as a Lambertian scattering sphere, emitting 1.5078 W/m2 at 700nm in wavelength. The Sun and Moon models were then imported into the IRT based radiative transfer computation. The trial simulation of the irradiance levels of moonshine lights shows that they agree well with the ROLO measurement data. We then estimate the lunar apparent albedo to 0.11. The results are to be compared with the measurement data.

  • The international EARTHSHINE mission is to measure 1% anomaly of the Earth global albedo and total solar irradiance using Amon-Ra instrument around Lagrange point 1. We developed a new ray truing based integrated end-to-end simulation tool that overcomes the shortcomings of the existing end-to-end performance simulation techniques. We then studied the in-orbit radiometric performance of the breadboard Anon-Ra visible channel optical system. The TSI variation and the Earth albedo anomaly, reported elsewhere, were used as the key input variables in the simulation. The output flux at the instrument focal plane confirms that the integrated ray tracing based end-to-end science simulation delivers the correct level of incident power to the Amon-Ra instrument well within the required measurement error budget of better than ${\pm}0.28%$. Using the global angular distribution model (ADM), the incident flux is then used to estimate the Earth global albedo and the TSI variation, confirming the validity of the primary science cases at the L1 halo orbit. These results imply that the integrated end-to-end ray tracing technique, reported here, can serve as an effective and powerful building block of the on-line science analysis tool in support of the international EARTHSHINE mission currently being developed.

  • In this study, a model for analyzing the spatial effect of large dam reservoirs on local hydrometeorology was developed, and then actually applied to the Seomjingang Dam, Soyanggang Dam, Andong Dam, and Chungju Dam. The application included the analysis of land use using the satellite images to derive the change in albedo before and after the dam construction. Summarizing the modeling procedure and its application results are as follows. (1) The change in albedo was found to be closely related with the size of the dam, also the spatial limit of albedo change were estimated to be 10-20km for the Seomjingang Dam, 40km for the Soyanggang Dam, 20-30km for the Andong Dam, and 50km for the Chungju Dam. (2) The change in the coefficient of recycle (ratio of internal supply of moisture to the total available moisture) was found to be big within the narrow boundary of the. dam, but become smaller as the boundary becomes larger. (3) The correlation between the albedo and. coefficient of recycle was found high. Thus, it could be concluded that the change in land use due to dam construction has much effect on the moisture circulation structure. (4) The spatial range of hydrometeorogic effect was compared with the water surface area of dam reservoir. The result showed that the spatial range sensitively increased up to $50km^2$ of water surface area.

  • In the coastal wetland the mud is consist of fine particles, which means that it is characterized by small gap, and heat transfer is obstructed since moisture is found between the gaps. The relationship between net radiation ($R_N$) and soil heat flux($H_G$) shows a counterclockwise hysteresis cycle, which refer to a time lag behind in the maximal soil heat fluxes. The albedo is independent of seasonal variation of the vegetation canopy which plays very important roles to store and control the heat in the atmospheric surface layer.

  • Star sensor provides highly accurate attitude information by imaging the stars in the dark space. The sensor output is disabled when the sensor avoidance of the Sunlight or the Earth's albedo is not satisfied. This paper studies the Sun and Earth avoidance characteristics of the star sensors according to the mounting direction. Then the paper proposes a systematic way of determining the star sensors mounting direction for typical remote sensing missions
