  • One algorithm has been developed for retrieving aerosol optical thickness from GMS-5 visible channel measurements, and then the algorithm was applied for obtaining the geographical distribution of aerosol optical thickness over East Asia during April 2002. Algorithm employs a look-up table based upon radiative transfer calculations with solar geometry, aerosol optical thickness, and surface albedo as inputs. Validation was conducted by comparing retrieved aerosol optical thickness with measured values from ground-based sky radiation measurements at Anmyon Do, Korea. It was found that the correlation coefficient is 0.71 with -0.03 of bias and 0.34 of root mean square error, suggesting that the algorithm developed in this study can be used for estimating aerosol optical thickness in a quantitative sense.

  • In this study, a new technique for atmospheric transmittance estimated from ALOS PRISM data is developed. It is based on satellite's observing radiances of different view angles and assumes that the cause of difference in radiances is the different view angles. The ALOS PRISM has three independent optical systems for viewing forward and backward and producing a stereoscopic image along the satellite's track. This stereo pair data can be used to estimate the transmittance according to the radiative transfer theory. This derived transmittance will be validated by the AERONET data and compared with the MODTRAN4 simulation results. Results show that the higher the land cover albedo, the better the derived transmittance compared to the AERONET data. Besides, this technique also shows the transmittance retrieval will be underestimated for the low land cover albedo.

  • Albedo-type boundary condition is incorporated into the finite element formulation of the cubic Hermite polynomials for the two-dimensional solution of the two-group diffusion problem. Two modifications are introduced with respect to the conventional expression for the weak form of the group diffusion equation with the zero flux or zero current boundary condition and the cubic element functions over the boundary nodes. The finite element formulations obtained from those modifications are tested with the two-dimensional ZION problem. The numerical effectiveness of the modifications are examined.

  • Laboratory tests have been carried out for investigation of the spectroscopic characteristics at visible wavelength of 12 common satellite materials used in satellite bus and payload. The obtained spectral data show that the materials can be classified and identified since their spectral features and albedos distinctly differ among them. It is suggested that the result of the laboratory tests for the satellite materials can be used for the predictions of material types, material composition ratios, sizes, and masses in comparison with the spectral data obtained from observations of new satellites or space debris.

  • A simple emission model applicable for low scattering (scattering << absorption) anisotropic layer is developed and applied to the interpretation of measurements of microwave emission from row crops. The vegetation layer of row crops is modeled as a random slab embedded with small spheroid with major axis aligend paralel to the crop-row direction. The total emission is given in a simple algebraic form based on the zero-order radiative transfer theory. The single scattering albedo for spheroid and its polarimetric phase function are presented. The effects of layer azimuthal dependence on emission are accounted for by using an anisotropic albedo in the zero-order transfer theory. The developed emission theory favorably compares with the brightness temperature measured over soybeans canopy.

  • We present optical and microphysical particle properties of aerosol retrieved by multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Anmyun island ($36.32^{\circ}N$, $126.19^{\circ}E$), Korea. The results present aerosol properties in various height layers of the atmospheric pollution layers observed over the Korean peninsula on eight consecutive days (27, 28, 29, 30 and 31 May, 4, 5 and 7 June) in 2005 at Anmyun island. We found anthropogenic pollution on 27, 28, and 29 May and local haze on other measurement days. The origin of the particle plumes was determined by simulations of FLEXPART. The source regions of the particles resulted in rather clear differences between the optical and microphysical properties of the pollution layers. The single-scattering albedo of anthropogenic aerosols from China ($0.91{\pm}0.01$ at 532 nm) were lower than the single-scattering albedo of local haze aerosols ($0.95{\pm}0.01$ at 532 nm). Local haze aerosols show larger effective radii of $0.24{\pm}0.02\;{\mu}m$ at relative humidity of 55~75%. The effective radii of anthropogenic aerosols are $0.20{\pm}0.2\;{\mu}m$ and $0.27\;{\mu}m$ at relative humidity of 25~50%.

  • Terrestrial ecosystem are a strong sink of carbon. Forest ecosystem, one of them, has been expected to play an important role in climate changing process by absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide. On the other hand, agricultural ecosystem that consists mainly of annual crops is regarded as poor contributor to carbon accumulation, because its production (carbon hydrate) is decomposed into carbon at a short period, which is emitted to the atmosphere. However, it is thought that fruit tree plays a great role in decreasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, same as forest. Net ecosystem exchange of $CO_2$ (NEE) was measured to estimate carbon fixation capacity using an eddy covariance (EC) system method in 2 years from 2005 to 2006 at an apple orchard in Uiseong, Gyeongbuk. Average air temperature values were higher in 2006 than in 2005 during the dormant season, and lower by about $5^{\circ}C$ over the growing season causing visible cold injuries. Accordingly, we investigated long-term exchange of carbon to determine how much difference of carbon fixation capacity was shown between 2006 and 2005 in terms of environmental and plant variables such as NEE, leaf area index (LAI), and Albedo. NEE was $4.8Mg\;C\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in 2005 and $4.7Mg\;C\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in 2006, respectively. Low temperature after July in 2006 decreased LAI values faster than those in 2005. Meanwhile, Albedo values were higher after July in 2006 than in 2005. These results show that the low temperature after July in 2006 apparently affected apple growth.

  • The Albedo MONitor and RAdiometer (AMON-RA) instrument system is designed to measure Earth global albedo anomaly over the wavelength range of 0.3um to 4um. The instrument consists of two interconnecting optical subsystems i.e. a visible channel and an energy channel. The energy channel instrument consists of a modified Winston cone, a couple of relay mirrors and a pyro-electric detector. First, we report the integration and alignment process, leading to the prototype bolometer instrument. We then discuss the radiometric performance characterization including laboratory measurement results and the future plan for further incorporation of the bolometer instrument into the prototype AMON-RA instrument.
