Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ Ceramics Prepared by a Precipitation Method (침전법으로 제조한 $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$계 세라믹스의 미세구조 및 기계적 특성)

  • A precipitation method, one of the most effective liquid phase reaction methods, was adopted in order to prepare high-tech Al2O3/ZrO2 composite ceramics. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent, various types of metal hydroxides were obtained by single precipitation(series A) and co-precipitation(series B) method at the pH condition between 7 and 11. Fine Al2O3-ZrO2 powders were prepared at optimum calcination condition and the effects of ZrO2 on microstructures and mechanical properties of Al2O3 were investigated. The composition of Al2O3/ZrO2 composites wax fixed as Al2O3-15 v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). ZrO2 limited the grain growth of Al2O3 and increased grain size homogeneity of Al2O3 more effectively than MgO.Flexural strength values in Al2O3 and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were 340-430 MPa and 540-820 MPa, respectively, and the effect of strength improvement showed 20-50% by adding ZrO2 to Al2O3. Fracture toughness of Al2O3/ZrO2 composites was improved by stress-induced phase transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 and toughening effect by microcrack was not observed. Also, ZrO2 particles located at Al2O3 grain junction contributed to toughening, while spherical ZrO2 particles located within Al2O3 grain did not contribute to toughening. Weibull moduli of Al2O3 ceramics and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites of series A and series B were 4.34, 5.17 and 9.06, respectively. Above 0.5 of failure probability, strength values in Al2O3 ceramics and Al2O3/ZrO3 composites of series A and series B were above 400 MPa, 700 MPa and 650 MPa, respectively.

  • Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(series A) were prepared by mixing Al2O3 powder obtained by single precipitation method with ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) powder obtained by co-predipitation method. Al2O3/ZrO2 composites (series B) were prepared by co-precipitation method using the three starting materials. In all cases, the composition was controlled as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). The composites of series A showed higher final relative densities than those of series B and tetagonal ZrO2 in all cases was retained to about 95% at room temperature. ZrO2 particles were coalesced more rapidly in grain boundary of Al2O3 than within Al2O3 grain. ZrO2 particles were located at 3-and 4-grain junction of Al2O3 and limited the grain growth of Al2O3. It was observed that MgO contributed to densification of Al2O3 but limited grain growth of Al2O3 by MgO was not remarkable. In all Al2O3/ZrO2 composites, exaggerated grain growth of Al2O3 was not observed and Al2O3/ZrO2 composites were found to have homogeneous microstructures.

  • The wetting behavior and the characteristic of spontaneous infiltration of pure Al and Al-(Si)-Mg alloys on {{{{ { {Al }_{ 2} O}_{3 } }} in vacuum argon and nitrogen atmosphere were investigated to find out the spontaneous in-filtration mechanism. The wetting of molten Al and Al alloys on {{{{ { {Al }_{ 2} O}_{3 } }} was only possible in cacuum at-mosphere but the sponataneous infiltration of molten Al-(Si)-Mg alloys was successfully made on {{{{ { {Al }_{ 2} O}_{3 } }} pre-form in nitrogen atmoshpere. The difference of wettability and spontaneous infiltration of molten Al and Al alloys on {{{{ { {Al }_{ 2} O}_{3 } }} were found to be related to formation of the Mg-N compound coated layer on {{{{ { {Al }_{ 2} O}_{3 } }} particles which was believd to increase wettability of molten Al alloys on {{{{ { {Al }_{ 2} O}_{3 }.

  • The properties of the powder of Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) system prepared by co-precipitation method at the pH values of 7, 9, 10 and 11 were investigated. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Zirconium hydroxide decreased the specific surface area of aluminum hydroxide of AlOOH type, while increased the specific surface area of aluminum hydroxide of Al(OH)3 type, and formed co-network structure of Al-O-Zr type with the aluminum hydroxides. The rate of transition to $\alpha$-Al2O3 from co-precipitated materials occurred in the order of 7≒10, 9 and 11 of pH values. Al2O3 and ZrO2 interacted to bring about coupled grain growth, and the growth of ZrO2 crystallite size rapidly occurred within $\theta$-Al2O3 matrix. Segregation did not occur in the system Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3) and Y2O3 acted as a stabilizer to ZrO2. The lattice strain of tetragonal ZrO2 was increased by the constraint effect of Al2O3 matrix.

  • The reaction sintering of Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb composite has been investigated using Al2O3, and ZrAl2 powders. Two kinds of specimens, 78.3Al2O3-14.0Nb2O5-7.7ZrAl2 in wt.% (AZN-5) and 72.3Al2O3-13.8Nb2O5-7.5ZrAl2-6.4ZrO2(AZN-10), were prepared. Powder compacts were sintered at various temperatures between 1$600^{\circ}C$ and 1$700^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in Ar. DTA and X-ray analysis have showen that a reaction between Nb2O5 and ZrAl2 started at 149$0^{\circ}C$ to form Al2O3, ZrO2, and Nb. The sintered density increased with the sintering temperature. AZN-10 specimen showed higher density than AZN-5 specimen for almost all the experimental conditions. Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb composite hot pressed after reaction sintering showed higher toughness and lower hardness than hot pressed Al2O3-ZrO2. The crack propagated through many metallic Nb particles which showed plastic deformation, and this is the cause of the increase in toughness of Al2O3-ZrO2-Nb composite over Al2O3-ZrO2.

  • Al2O3/t-ZrO2 particulate composites were prepared by sintering at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and 1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2h in air and microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. Although most ZrO2 particles existed at Al2O3 grain boundaries a few ZrO2 particles within Al2O3 grains. Al2O3 grain growth was depressed due to the pinning effect by ZrO2 particles. During sintering coarsening of intergranular ZrO2 particles occurred as a results of the elimination of ZrO2 intraagglomerate grain boundaries and the coalescence of dragged ZrO2 particles by migrating Al2O3 grain boundries. Changes in mechanical properties of Al2O3 composites were dependant on microstructure of Al2O3 matrix and on size and structure of dispersed ZrO2.

Effect of Particle Size on the Characterization of Plasma Sprayed $Al_2O_3$ Coating Layer (플라즈마 용사된 $Al_2O_3$층의 특성에 미치는 입자크기의 영향)

  • An objective of this study is to compare the characteristics of coating layer of plasma sprayed fine $Al_2O_3$ and those of layer by commercial $Al_2O_3$(Metco 105). The microstructure of fine $Al_2O_3$ coating layer was denser compared with commercial $Al_2O_3$ coating layer. The surface roughness$(R_a)$ of the layer by the fine $Al_2$O$_3$ was lower compared with that of commercial $Al_2O_3$. Thickness of splat for fine $Al_2O_3$ was $1.4\mu\textrm{m}$ while the commercial $Al_2O_3$ was $3.53\mu\textrm{m}$. The main phase existing in coating layer was of $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ and the fraction of $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ in fine $Al_2O_3$ coating layer was 8.39% and that of commercial $Al_2O_3$ was 13.79%. Microhardness was no great difference between the fine and commercial $Al_2O_3$ but deviation of the fine $Al_2O_3$ coating layer was relatively large. Accordingly, the strength of splat of the coating was expected that fine $Al_2O_3$was lower than commercial $Al_2O_3$ powder.

Dielectric Characteristics of the ${Ta_2}{O_5}/{Al_2}{O_3}$ Multilayer Thin Films Processed by Reactive Sputtering (반응성 스퍼터링으로 제조한 ${Ta_2}{O_5}/{Al_2}{O_3}$ 다충박막의 유전특성)

  • Dielectric properties and leakage current characteristics of 100 nm-thick $Ta_2O_5/Al_2O_3$multilayer thin films, which were fabricated by reactive sputtering of$Al_2O_3$and$Ta_2O_5$ successively on top of each other for total 9 layers, have been investigated with variation of the$Al_2O_3$content$(i.e,\;Ta_2O_5/Al_2O_3 \;thickness\;ratio)$.$Ta_2O_5/Al_2O_3$films were amorphous regardless of the$Al_2O_3$content. With increasing the$Al_2O_3$content from 0% to 100%, refractive index of the $Ta_2O_5/Al_2O_3$films decreased linearly from 2.03 to 1.56 and dielectric constant was lowered from 23.9 to 7.7 Variation of the dielectric constant with the$Al_2O_3$content was in good agreement with the behavior that was obtained by assuming parallel capacitors of$Al_2O_3$and Ta_2O_5$. Leakage current characteristics of $Ta_2O_5/Al_2O_3$ multilayer films were superior to those of $Ta_2O_5$ and$Al_2O_3$films. $Ta_2O_5/Al_2O_3$ films of 5% and 10%$Al_2O_3$content exhibited excellent leakage current densities which were lower than $10^{-7} A/cm^2$ at 1MV/cm.

The Influence of Al2O3 on the Properties of Alkali-Activated Slag Cement (알칼리 활성화 슬래그 시멘트의 특성에 미치는 Al2O3의 영향)

  • This research investigates the influence of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) composition on the alkali-activated slag cement (AASC). Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) was added to GGBFS binder between 2% and 16% by weight. The alkaline activators KOH (potassium hydroxide) was used and the water to binder ratio of 0.50. The strength development results indicate that increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$ enhanced hydration. The 2M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ and 4M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ specimens had the highest strength, with an average of 30.8 MPa and 45.2 MPa, after curing for 28days. The strength at 28days of 2M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ was 46% higher than that of 2M KOH (without $Al_2O_3$). Also, the strength at 28days of 4M KOH + 16% $Al_2O_3$ was 44% higher than that of 4M KOH (without $Al_2O_3$). Increase the $Al_2O_3$ contents of the binder results in the strength development at all curing ages. The incorporation of AASC tended to increases the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) due to the similar effects of strength, but increasing the amount of $Al_2O_3$ adversely decreases the water absorption and porosity. Higher addition of $Al_2O_3$ in the specimens increases the Al/Ca and Al/Si in the hydrated products. SEM and EDX analyses show that the formation of much denser microstructures with $Al_2O_3$ addition.

Effect of $Al_2O_3$ pre-layers formed using protective Si-oxide layer on the growth of ultra thin ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ epitaxial layer (보호용 실리콘 산화막을 이용하여 제조된 $Al_2O_3$ 예비층이 초박막 ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ 에피텍시의 성장에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, we propose the formation of an $Al_2O_3$ pre-layer using a protective Si-oxide layer and Al layer. Deposition of a thin film layer of aluminum onto a Si surface covered with a thin Si-oxide layer and annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ led to the growth of epitaxial $Al_2O_3$ layer on Si(111). And ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer was grown on the $Al_2O_3$ per-layer. Etching of the Si substrate by $N_2O$ gas could be avoided in the initial growth stage by the $Al_2O_3$ pre-layer. It was confirmed that the $Al_2O_3$ pre-layer was effective in improving the surface morphology of the very thin ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ films.
