The influence of rhenium (Re) and ruthenium (Ru) addition on the solidification and solute redistribution behaviors in advanced experimental Ni-base superalloys has been investigated. A series of model alloys with different levels of Re and Ru were designed based on the composition of Ni-6Al-8Ta and were prepared by vacuum arc melting of pure metallic elements. In order to identify the influence of Re and Ru addition on the thermo-physical properties, differential scanning calorimetry analyses were carried out. The results showed that Re addition marginally increases the liquidus temperature of the alloy. However, the ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ solvus was significantly increased at a rate of $8.2^{\circ}C/wt.%$ by the addition of Re. Ru addition, on the other hand, displayed a much weaker effect on the thermo-physical properties or even no effect at all. The microsegregation behavior of solute elements was also quantitatively estimated by an electron probe microanalysis on a sample quenched during directional solidification of primary ${\gamma}$ with the planar solid/liquid interface. It was found that increasing the Re content gradually increases the microsegregation tendency of Re into the dendritic core and ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ forming elements, such as Al and Ta, into the interdendritic area. The strongest effect of Ru addition was found to be Re segregation. Increasing the Ru content up to 6 wt.% significantly alleviated the microsegregation of Re, which resulted in a decrease of Re accumulation in the dendritic core. The influence of Ru on the microstructural stability toward the topologically close-packed phase formation was discussed based on Scheil type calculations with experimentally determined microsegregation results.

We previously identified cancer-upregulated gene 2 (CUG2) as a commonly up-regulated gene in various human cancer tissues, especially in ovary, liver, and lung (Lee et al., 2007a). CUG2 was determined to be a nuclear protein that exhibited high proto-oncogenic activities when overexpressed in NIH3T3 mouse fibroblast cells. To identify other cellular functions of CUG2, we performed yeast two-hybrid screening and identified CENP-T, a component of CENP-A nucleosome complex in the centromere, as an interacting partner of CUG2. Moreover, CENP-A, the principle centromeric determinant, was also found in complex with CENP-T/CUG2. Immunofluorescent staining revealed the co-localization of CUG2 with human centromeric markers. Inhibition of CUG2 expression drastically affected cell viability by inducing aberrant cell division. We propose that CUG2 is a new component of the human centromeric complex that is required for proper chromosome segregation during mitosis.

Micro-Macro approach is conducted for the mixture solidification to handle the closely linked phenomena of microscopic solute redistribution and macroscopic solidification behavior. For this purpose, present work combines the efficiency of mixture theory for macro part and the capability of microscopic analysis of two-phase model for micro part. The micro part of present study is verified by comparison with experiment of Al-4.9 mass% Cu alloy. The effect of back diffusion on the macroscopic variables such as temperature and liquid concentration, is appreciable. The effect, however, is considerable on the mixture concentration and eutectic fraction which are indices of macro and micro segregation, respectively. According to the diffusion time, the behavior near the cooling wall where relatively rapid solidification permits short solutal diffusion time, approaches Scheil equation limit and inner part approaches lever rule limit.
The graphitization is affected by the addition of small amount of the elements(such as Si, Al, Ni, B, Cr and Mn etc.) and the pre-treatment(such as cold rolling). Boron is well known element to accelerate the graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels. Also, cold rolling is known to accelerate the graphitization. But the graphitization nucleation mechanism by cold rolling is few reported. Therefore the effect of cold rolling in Fe-0.5%C-1.0%Si-0.47%Mn-0.005%B steel on the graphitization is investigated quantitatively using hardness test, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, neutron induced microscopic radiography. The nucleation of graphite in cold-rolled Fe-0.5%C-1.0%Si-0.47%Mn-0.005%B steel is formed at void which is formed at pearlite/pearlite boundary by cold rolling. But the effect of cold rolling on graphitization in boron addition steel is more effective than that of no boron addition steel due to segregation of BN at void in boron addition steel.

A micro-macroscopic analysis on the conduction-controlled directional casting of Al-Cu alloys is performed, in which emphases are placed on the microstructural features. In order to facilitate the solution procedure, an iterative micro-macroscopic coupling algorithm is developed. The predicted results show that the effect of finite back diffusion on the transient solidification process in comparison with the lever rule depends essentially on the initial concentration of an alloy. In the final casting, the eutectic fraction is distributed in an increasing-decreasing-increasing pattern, each mode of which is named the chill, interior and end zones. This nonuniformity per se suffices to justify the necessity of this work because it originates from the combined effects of finite back diffusion and cooling path-dependent nature of the eutectic formation. As the cooling rate is enhanced, not only the influence depths of boundaries narrow, but also the eutectic fractions in the chill and interior zones increase. In addition, it is revealed for the first time that the micro segregation band is formed in response to a sudden change in cooling rate during the directional casting. An increasing change creates an overshooting band in the eutectic fraction distribution, and vice versa.
Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets were patterned with poly[benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthothiadiazole] (PBDT-DTNT) and poly[bis(triiso-propylsilylethynyl) benzodithiophene-bis(decyltetradecyl-thien) naphthobisthiadiazole] (PBDT-TIPS-DTNT-DT) and used in photovoltaics. Conductive patternings changed via surface modification of rGO; because polymers encountered a high hindrance while assembling onto grafted rGO. The best records were detected in indium tin oxide (ITO):poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS):PBDTDTNT/rGO:PBDT-DTNT:LiF:Al devices, i.e., short current density $(J_{sc})=11.18mA/cm^2$, open circuit voltage $(V_{oc})=0.67V$, fill factor (FF) = 62% and power conversion efficiency (PCE) = 4.64%. PCE increased 2.31 folds after incorporation of PBDT-DTNT into thin films. Larger polymer assemblies on bared-rGO nanosheets resulted in greater phase separations.

Computer Automated Radioactive Particle Tracking (CARPT) technique has been successfully utilized to measure the velocity profiles and mixing parameters in different multiphase flow systems where a single radioactive tracer is used to track the tagged phase. However, many industrial processes use a wide range of particles with different physical properties where solid particles could vary in size, shape and density. For application in such systems, the capability of current single tracer CARPT can be advanced to track more than one particle simultaneously. Tracking multiple particles will thus enable to track the motion of particles of different size shape and density, determine segregation of particles and probing particle interactions. In this work, a newly developed Multiple Radioactive Particle Tracking technique (M-RPT) used to track two different radioactive tracers is demonstrated. The M-RPT electronics was developed that can differentiate between gamma counts obtained from the different radioactive tracers on the basis of their gamma energy peak. The M-RPT technique was validated by tracking two stationary and moving particles (Sc-46 and Co-60) simultaneously. Finally, M-RPT was successfully implemented to track two phases, solid and liquid, simultaneously in three phase slurry bubble column reactors.

For use in spintronic materials, dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are under consideration as spin injectors for spintronic devices[l]. $TiO_2$-based DMS doped by a cobalt, iron, and manganese et al. was recently reported to show ferromagnetic properties, even at temperatures above 300K and the magnetic ordering was explained in terms of carrier-induced ferromagnetism, as observed for a III-V based DMS. An anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and co-occurance of superparamagnetism in reduced Co-doped rutile $TiO_{2-\delta}$ films have also been reported[2]. Metal segregation in the reduced metal-doped rutile $TiO_2-\delta$ films still remains as problems to solve the intrinsic DMS properties. Superlattice films have been proposed to get dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS) with intrinsicroom-temperature ferromagnetism. For a $TiO_2$-based DMS superlattice structure, each layer was alternately doped by two different transition metals (Fe and Mn) and deposited to a thickness of approximately $2.7\;{\AA}$ on r-$Al_2O_3$(1102) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The r-$Al_2O_3$(1102) substrates with atomic steps and terrace surface were obtained by thermal annealing. Samples of $Ti_{0.94}Fe_{0.06}O_2$(TiFeO), $Ti_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}O_2$(TiMnO), and $Ti_{0.94}(Fe_{0.03}Mn_{0.03})O_2$ show a low remanent magnetization and coercive field, as well as superparamagnetic features at room temperature. On the other hand, superlattice films (TiFeO/TiMnO) show a high remanent magnetization and coercive field. An anomalous Hall effect in superlattice films exhibits hysisteresis loops with coercivities corresponding to those in the ferromagnetic Hysteresis loops. The superlattice films composed of alternating layers of $Ti_{0.94}Fe_{0.06}O_2$ and $Ti_{0.94}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ exhibit intrinsic ferromagnetic properties for dilute magnetic semiconductor applications.

Molecular mapping of plant genomes has progressed rapidly since Bostein et al.(1980) introduced the idea of constructing linkage maps of human genome based on restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers. In recent years, the development of protein and DNA markers has stimulated interest for the new approaches to plant improvement. While classical maps based on morphological mutant markers have provided important insights into the plant genetics and cytology, the molecular maps based on molecular markers have a number of inherent advatages over classical genetic maps for the applications in genetic studies and/or breeding schemes. Isozymes and DNA markers are numerous, discrete, non-deleterious, codominant, and almost entirely free of environmental and epistatic interactions. For these reasons, they are widely used in constructing detailed linkage maps in a number of plant species. Plant breeders improve crops by selecting plants with desirable phenotypes. However a plant's phenotyes is often under genetic control, positioning at different "quantitative trait loci" (QTLs) together with environmental effects. Molecular maps provide a possible way to determine the effect of the individual gene that combines to produce a quantitative trait because the segregation of a large number of markers can be followed in a single genetic cross. Using market-assisted selection, plants that contain several favorable genes for the trait and do not contain unfavourable segments can be obtained during early breeding processes. Providing molecular maps are available, valuable data relevant to the taxonomic relationships and chromosome evolution can be accumulated by comparative mapping and also the structural relationships between linkage map and physical map can be identified by cDNA sequencing. After constructing high density maps, it will be possible to clone genes, whose products are unknown, such as semidwarf and disease resistance genes. However, much attention has to be paid to level-up the basic knowledge of genetics, physiology, biochemistry, plant pathology, entomology, microbiology, and so on. It must also be kept in mind that scientists in various fields will have to make another take off by intensive cooperation together for early integration and utilization of these newly emerging high-techs in practical breeding. breeding.

Mathematical models for char-slag interaction and near-wall particle segregation developed by Montagnaro et. al. were applied to predict various aspects of coal gasification in an up-flow entrained gasifier of commercial scale. For this purpose, some computer simulations were performed using gPROMS as the numerical solver. Typical design parameters and operating conditions of the commercial gasifiers were used as input values for the simulation. Development of a densely dispersed phase of solid carbon was found to have a critical effect on both carbon conversion and ash flow behavior. In general, such a slow-moving phase was turned out to enhance carbon conversion by lengthening the residence time of char or soot particles. Furthermore, it was also found that guiding the transfer of char or soot into the closer part of the wall to coal burner is favorable in terms of gasification efficiency and vitrified ash collection. Finally, to a certain degree densely dispersed phase of carbon showed an yield-enhancing effect of syngas.
