xAl-yZr mixed oxide catalysts with different molar ratios of Al/(Al+Zr) were prepared by a co-precipitation method and its catalytic performance was compared in the iso-propanol dehydration as a model reaction. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), N2 adsorprion-desorption, NH3 temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), and iso-propanol TPD analyses. The addition of Al into ZrO2 promoted the formation of relatively small particles with large surface areas and retarded the transformation of teragonal phase to monoclnic phase. NH3-TPD results revealed that the relative acidity of the catalysts increased along with the increase of Al molar ratio. The catalytic activity for the dehydration of iso-propanol to propylene was also increased with the same tendency. The catalytic activity could be correlated with high surface area, acidity and easy desorption of iso-propanol.
A Ti47Al1.7W-3.7Zr alloy was oxidized between $900^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$, and the oxide scales formed were studied. The oxide scales consisted primarily of an outer$TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layer, and an inner mixed ($TiO _2$ + $Al_2$$O_3$) layer. Besides $TiO_2$ and $Al_2$$O_3$, oxidation led to the formation of some $Ti_2$AlN and TiN. Both W and Zr were preferentially segregated below the intermediate $Al_2$$O_3$-rich layer. Tungsten in the oxide scale was present as $WO_3$ and ${Ti}_{x}$$W_{1-x}$, whereas zirconium as monoclic-$ZrO_2$ and tetragonal-$ZrO_2$.
The mechanical properties of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites fabricated by RBAO(reaction bonded aluminium oxide) process were investigated. As the amount of ZrO2 increased the sinstered density of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites decreased slightly, but wear resistance was enhanced. Bending strength of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites increased in proportion to the amount of al in case of a fixed ZrO2 content. When the amount of Al was fixed bending strength reached its maximum value at 25 wt% ZrO2. The fracture toughness(K1c) increased with increasing content of ZrO2, but decreased with increasing Al amount. On the other hand, the fracture mode of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was the mixed mode of inter-and transgranular fracture.
The reaction-sintered alumina and zirconia-alumina ceramics having low firing shrinkage were prepared from the Al/Al2O3 or Al/ZrO2(Ca-PSZ) powder mixtures via the attrition milling. And in this milling process the effect of the characteristics of used powders was investigated. Attrition milling was much more effective in reducing the particle size of ceramic/metal mixed powders than ball milling. Powder mixtures of flake-type Al with coarse alumina was much more effectively comminuted by the attrition milling than the mixtures of globular-type Al with coarse alumina powders. And coarse alumina than fine alumina was much more beneficial in cutting and reducing the ductile Al particles. In the contrary to Al/Al2O3 powder mixtures, Al/ZrO2 powder mixtures was not effectively comminutd. But whether using the alumina ball media or attrition milled with Al2O3 powder rather than Al, the milling efficiency was much more increased.
For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.

The corrosion resistance of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) materials were investigated for high-class steel manufacturing. Composite samples were fabricated by mixing $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO, mullite, spinel, and carbon. The raw materials were mixed with attrition milling, compacted in a uniaxial pressure of 200MPa and calcined at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in $N_2$ atmosphere. The bulk density and apparent porosity of the calcined samples were measured by the liquid displacement method in water using Archimedes's principle. The corrosion resistance of the samples were measured by cup test with mold powder at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The microstructure and elemental analysis of samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), and X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD). The XRD result shows that the starting raw materials were crystalline phase. The microstructure of fabricated specimen was investigated before and after corrosion tests at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2h. $ZrO_2$-C composite showed good resistance in the slag corrosion test. Among the composite oxide materials, $ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$-C and $ZrO_2$-MgO-C showed better resistance than $ZrO_2$-C in the slag corrosion test. The diameter variation index of $ZrO_2$-C refractory was 16.1 at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The diameter variation index of the $ZrO_2-Al_2O_3$-C refractory was larger than that of the $ZrO_2$-C refractory at $1550^{\circ}C$ for 2 h.
The reaction-sintered alumina and zirconia-alumina ceramics were fabricated from the Al/Al2O3 or Zl/ZrO2(Ca-PSZ) powder mixtures via the attrition milling. And the effects of the milling characteristics of used raw powders on reaction sintering were investigated. After attrition milling and isopressing at 400 MPa the Al/Al2O3 specimen was oxidated at 1200℃ for 8 hours followed by sintering at 1550℃ for 3 hours. Because mixed powders of flake-type Al with coarse alumina was much more effectively comminuted than the globular-type Al with coarse alumina powders, it's sintered body of more than 97% theoretical density was achived, but low contents of Al leads to relatively higher shrinkage of about 8%. And because coarse alumina particles was much more beneficial in cutting and reducing the ductile Al particles, using the coarse alumina powder was much more effective in reaction sintering. Fused Ca-PSZ powder was reaction sintered with Al at 1550℃ for 3 hours and low shrinkage ZrO2-Al2O3 composites were fabricated. But because Al/Ca-PSZ powder mixtures were not effectively milled the reaction sintering and densification was difficult. And the Ca ion in Ca-PSZ grains diffused into alumina grains during sintering so that the unstabilization of Ca-PSZ body was occured which gave the microcracks in the specimens.
$N_2O$ decomposition characteristics of dual bed mixed metal oxide catalytic system was investigated. The partial oxidation of methane at first reactor of dual bed catalytic system was performed over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst under the optimized condition of $8,000h^{-1}$ GHSV, gas ratio ($CH_4:O_2=5:1$) at $500^{\circ}C$. In the dual bed system investigated herein, the second catalyst bed was employed for the $N_2O$ decomposition using product of partial oxidation of methane at first bed. An excellent $N_2O$ conversion activity even at lower temperature ($<250^{\circ}C$) was obtained with Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) or Co-Rh-Zr-Al (1/0.2/0.3/1) catalyst by combining Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) hydrotalcite catalyst for the partial oxidation of methane in a dual-bed system. The $N_2O$ conversion activity is drastically reduced in the presence of oxygen in second bed of a dual-bed system over Co-Rh-Al (1/0.2/1) catalyst at $300^{\circ}C$.
Transition metal ions doped $TiO_2$ nanostructured powders were prepared with simply heating aqueous $TiOCl_2$ solutions, contained various metal ions (Ni, Al, Fe, Zr, and Nb) of 1.47 mol% added as metal-chlorides, at $100^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs by homogeneous precipitation process under suppressing conditions of water vaporization. The characterizations for prepared $TiO_2$ powders were carried out to observe doping of metal ions, their concentrations and microstructures using XRD, UV-VIS (DRS), XPS, SEM, TEM and ICP. Also, photo-oxidative abilities were evaluated by decomposition of 4-chlorophenol (4CP) under ultraviolet light irradiations. No secondary oxide phases were formed in all the $VTiO_2$ powders, showing doping with various transition metal ions. When adding ions ($Ni^{2+}$ or$ Al^{3+ }$ and $Zr^{4+}$ ) having valance states or ionic radii greatly different from those of $Ti^{4+}$ , the $TiO_2$ powders of mixed anatase and rutile phases were formed, whereas in the case of additions of $^Fe{3+ }$ and $Nb^{ 5+}$ as well as no addition of metal ion the powders with pure rutile phase alone were formed. Among the prepared $TiO_2$ powders, Ni$^{2+}$ doped $TiO_2$ powders, containing a small amount of anatase phase, showed excellent photo-oxidative ability in 4CP decomposition because of relative decreases in electron-hole recombination and poisoning of $TiO_2$ surface during the photoreaction.n.
