  • The texture of Al/Ti thin films deposited on low-dielectric polymer substrates has been investigated. Fifty-nm-thick Ti films and 500-nm-thick Al-1%Si-0.5%Cu (wt%) films were deposited sequentially onto low-k polymers and SiO$_2$ by using a DC magnetron sputtering system. The texture of Al thin film was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) theta-2theta ($\theta$-2$\theta$) and rocking curve and the microstructure of Al/Ti films on low-k polymer and SiO$_2$ substrates was characterized by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). hall thin films deposited on SiO$_2$ had stronger texture than those deposited on low-k polymer. The texture of Al thin films strongly depended on that of Ti films. Cross-sectional TEM resealed that Brains of Ti films on SiO$_2$ substrates had grown perpendicular to the substrate, while the grains of Ti films on SiLK substrates were farmed randomly. The lower degree of 111 texture of Al thin films on low-k polymer was due to Ti underlayer.

  • Improvement of the mechanical properties of a commercial aluminium casting alloy, A356, was achieved through an optimised combination of alloying elements, modification, and heat treatment. 0.7 wt.% Cu and an additional 0.2 wt.% Mg were added to an Al-7Si-0.35Mg alloy for strengthening at both room and elevated temperatures, whilst a subsequent decrease in the ductility was compensated for by the modification of eutectic Si by Sr addition at a level of up to 110 ppm. It was found that the dissolution of Cu-rich or Mg-rich phases could be maximised by solid-solutionising an alloy with 40 ppm Sr at $530^{\circ}C$, increasing the tensile and yield strengths to 350 MPa and 297 MPa, respectively, with a reasonably high strain of 5% after peak-aging at $210^{\circ}C$. Further addition of Sr up to 110 ppm is, however, more likely to interfere with the dissolution of the Cu-rich or Mg-rich phases during solid solution treatment, resulting in a slight decrease in both tensile and yield strengths at room temperature. Besides the Cu addition, such undissolved phases, on the other hand, may contribute to elevated temperature strength at $200^{\circ}C$.

  • This study aims to investigate on the effects of alloying elements and heat treatment on the microstructures, wear and heat resistance of Al-Si-Cu-Mg-(Ni)/SiCp prepared by the duplex process developed in previous study, which consists of squeeze infiltration (1st process) and squeeze casting (2nd process). The hardness of composite increased with decrease in SiCp size and Ni addition in both the heat exposured composite and the as-cast one. And the heat and wear resisting properties was improved by the SiCp reinforcement and the Ni addition. The wear amount of Al/SiCp composite decreased with decreasing in the size of silicon carbide particle.

  • Porous hybrid preforms were fabricated by reactive sintering using the compacts consisting of SiC particles, Fe and Al powders. Squeeze casting processing was employed to produce the composite in which the matrix phase is Al-Si7Mg. The microstructural change and wear resistance of the composites were investigated in terms of an amount of SiC particles. The wear loss was increased with increasing the contact pressure in the alloy containing SiC particles coated with Cu. The most drastic change was found to the specimen tested at 2.5 MPa of contact pressure. Concerning the alloys containing SiC particles coated with Ni-P, a drastic increase in the wear loss exhibited at 2 MPa of contact pressure in those alloys containing 4 and 8 wt. % of SiC particles coated with Ni-P. In the alloy containing 16 wt. % a proportional increase in wear loss was observed to the change of contact pressure. With respecting to the sliding velocity, the wear loss of the alloy containing SiC particles coated with Cu increased at the initial stage of wear process and then decreased. Similar result was found in the alloys containing SiC particles coated with Ni-P. On the basis of the present results obtained, it was found that wear resistance of the alloys tested was improved to show in the order of the alloy reinforced by coated SiC particles > by uncoated SiC particles > by intermetallic compound without SiC particles.

  • Microstructure of aluminum alloys produced by the different mixing ratio of secondary ingot made by aluminum UBC (used beverage can) and virgin aluminum was investigated. The phase transitions of casted ingot by heat treatment were also studied. The alloys were melted at the electric resistance furnace, then casted using ceramic filter. Homogenization heat treatment was conducted at $615^{\circ}C$ for 10hrs to control cast microstructure. There were several kinds of phases, in as-cast condition, such as $\alpha$($Al_{12}$ $((Fe,Mn)_3$Si), $\beta$($Al_{6}$ (Fe,Mn)), and fine $Mg_2$Si phases. Especially, the amount of $\beta$-phase which was harmful in forming process was large. The $\beta$-Phase formed was transformed to u-phase by heat treatment. The fine $Mg_2$Si in the aluminum matix was also transformed to $\alpha$-phase by this heat treatment. Impurities filtered during casting process were identified as intermetallic compounds of Fe, Cu, Si.

  • The effects of Cu on feeding and macro-porosity characteristics were investigated in hypo- (A356 and 319) and hypereutectic (391) aluminum-silicon alloys. T-section and Tatur tests showed that the feeding and macro-porosity characteristics were significantly different between the hypo- and hypereutectic alloys. The hole and the pipe in the T-section and the Tatur casting in hypereutectic alloy showed a rough and irregular shape due to the faceted growth of the primary silicon, while the results of the hypoeutectic alloys exhibited a rather smooth surface. However, the addition of Cu did not strongly affect the macro-feeding behavior. It is known that copper segregates and interferes the feeding process in the last stage of solidification, possibly leading to form more amount of micro shrinkage porosity by the addition of Cu. The macro porosity formation mechanism and feeding properties were discussed upon T-section and Tatur tests together with an alloying addition.

  • CV graphite cast iron has been studied and generally known to have properties close to the average values of those between flake and spheroidal graphite cast iron. However, the thermal diffusivity of CV graphite cast iron is much larger than that of the average value of those between flake and spheroidal graphite cast iron. In this study, an easy production method of CV graphite cast iron with small additions of a Al-Cu which is known as the element of the graphitization was investigated. The effects of hold time and of Al-Cu additions after the treatments with spheroidizer (Fe-Si-Mg alloy) were also investigated. Increasing the additions of a Al-Cu alloy, the holding time to form a CV graphite cast iron was decreasing. Tensile strength and thermal diffusivity (flash method) were measured in order to find the changes of the mechanical properties and the physical properties. Spheroidal, CV, and flake graphite cast iron have tensile strengths 46.44, 38.29, and $27.29\;kg/mm^2$ and thermal diffusivities $3.95{\times}10^{-6,}$ $8.41{\times}10^{-6}$, $8.81{\times}10^{-6}m^2/sec$, respectively at room temperature.

  • In this study, the effects of Zn additions on the mechanical properties of Al-Si-Mg-Cu alloys were investigated by increasing the amount of Zn up to 8wt.%. As the Zn content was increased up to 6 wt.%, the yield strength and elongation changed linearly without any significant changes in the size and shape of the main reinforcement phase. However, it was confirmed by SEM observation that the Mg-Zn phase formed between the reinforcement phases when the amount of Zn added exceeded 7wt.%. A Mg-Zn intermetallic compound formed between the $Mg_2Si$ phase, becoming a crack initiation point under stress. Thus, the formation of the Mg-Zn phase may cause a sharp decrease in the elongation when Zn at levels exceeding 7 wt.%. It was also found that the matrix became more brittle with increasing the Zn content. From these results, it can be concluded that the formation of the Mg-Zn intermetallic compound and the brittle characteristics of the matrix are the main causes of the remarkable changes in the mechanical properties of this alloy system

  • The increasing demand for automotive industries to reduce the weight of the vehicles has led to a growing usage of Al alloy powder metallurgy (P/M) parts. In order to control the sintered microstructure and mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy powder metallurgical (P/M) parts, it is essential to establish a fundamental understanding of the microstructural development during the sintering process. This paper presents a detailed study of the effect of temperature and initial starting materials on the evolution of microstructure during the sintering of Al-Cu-Mg-Si blends for PM.
