Cr-Si based alloys are not only excellent in corrosion resistance at high temperatures, but also have good wear resistance due to the formation of Cr3Si phase, therefore they are promising as metallic coating materials. Aluminum is often added to Cr-Si alloys to improve the oxidation resistance through which stable alumina surface film is formed. On the other hand, due to the addition of aluminum, various Al-containing phases may be formed and may negatively affect the heat resistance of the Cr-Si-Al alloys, so detailed investigation is required. In this study, two Cr-Si-Al alloys (high-Si & high-Al) were prepared in the form of cast ingots through a vacuum arc melting process and the microstructural changes after high temperature heating process were investigated. In the case of the cast high-Si alloy, a considerable amount of Cr3Si phase was formed, and its hardness was significantly higher than that of the cast high-Al alloy. Also, Al-rich phases (with the high Al/Cr ratio) were not found much compared to the high-Al alloy. Meanwhile, it was observed that the amount of the Al-rich phases reduced by the annealing heat treatment for both alloys. In the case of the high temperature heating at 1,400 ℃, no significant microstructural change was observed in the high Si alloy, but a little more coarse and segregated AlCr phases were found in the high Al alloy compared to the cast state.

Thermomechanical behavior of Al-Mg-Si alloys have been studied to investigate the effect of microstructural features such as pre-existing substructure and distribution of particles on the deformation characteristics. The controlled compression tests have been carried out to get the basic information on how the alloy responds to temperature, strain amount and strain rate. Then hot forging of Al-Mg-Si alloys has been carried out and analyzed by the comparison with the compression tests. Microstructural features after forging have been discussed in terms of the thermomechanical response of Al-Mg-Si alloys. As already well mentioned, we have found that the deformation of Al-Mg-Si at the elevated temperature brought the recovered structure on most conditions. In a certain time, however, abnormally large grains have been found as a result of deformation assisted grain growth, which means that hot forging of Al-Mg-Si alloys could lead to a undesirable microstructural variation and the consequent mechanical properties such as fatigue strength.
Here, we report on nanocrystalline Si-Al-M (M = Fe, Cu, Ni, Zr) alloys for use as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, which were fabricated via a melt-spinning method. Based on the XRD and TEM analyses, it was found that the Si-Al-M alloys consist of nanocrystalline Si grains surrounded by an amorphous matrix phase. Among the Si-Al-M alloys with different metal composition, Ni-incorporated Si-Al-M alloy electrode retained the high discharge capacity of 2492 mAh/g and exhibited improved cyclability. The superior $Li^+$ storage performance of Si-Al-M alloy with Ni component is mainly responsible for the incorporated Ni, which induces the formation of ductile and conductive inactive matrix with crystalline Al phase, in addition to the grain size reduction of active Si phase.
This study has investigated the effect of aging treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-6Al-xZn(x = 1.5, 2.5) alloys fabricated by the squeeze casting process. The microstructures of as-squeeze cast were composed of pro-eutectic ${\alpha}$, super saturated ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ compound. Aged at both $200^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$, Mg-6Al-xZn alloys showed the peak hardness due to the formation of ${\beta}(Mg_{17}Al_{12})$ precipitates. The discontinuous precipitates of the lamella type are predominant at $200^{\circ}C$ aging treatment, while the finely dispersed continuous precipitates were dominant at $240^{\circ}C$ aging treatment. Mg-6Al-xZn alloys fabricated by the squeeze casting process had the better combination of tensile strength and elongation compared to the conventionally cast alloys. As zinc contents increased, the tensile strength was increased by the solid solution strengthening effect of zinc.
Fabrication of high strength Mg-Li-Al alloys by squeeze casting was established by the stabilization of melt and mold temperatures, applied pressure and the refining method. The entrapment of inclusions during pouring was prevented using 30 ppi alumina foam filter. The as-cast microstructure consists of a mixture of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases including AILi and $MgLi_2$, Al particles, which are distributed in the ${\beta}$ matrix. The grain sizes of gravity and squeeze casting alloys were 288 ${\mu}m$ and 207 ${\mu}m$ respectively. The addition of Al in Mg-Li alloys promoted the formation of second phase particles, which were adjusted to optimize the properties of Mg-Li-Al alloys. The Mg-10wt%Li-5wt%Al alloy after heat treatment at $350^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed the maximum hardness value. This is due to the facts that the amounts of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases and their distributions are dependent upon the solution treatment temperature, and that the amounts of AILi and $MgLi_2Al$ particles are dependent upon the Al content.
The effects of Cu and Fe additions on the thermal stability, microstructure and mechanical properties of $Al_{85}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5},\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-Mm_{6.5}Cu_1,\;Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Fe_1$ alloys, manufactured by gas atomization, degassing and hot-extrusion were investigated. Gas atomization, with a wide super-cooled liquid region, allowed the alloy powders to exhibit varying microstructure depending primarily on the powder size and composition. Al hotextruded alloys consisted of homogeneously-distributed fine-grained fcc-Al matrix and intermetallic compounds. A substitution of 1 at.% Al by Cu increased the thermal stability of the amorphous phase and produced alloy microstructure with smaller fcc-Al grains. On the other hand, the same substitution of 1 at.% Al by Fe decreased the stability of the amorphous phase and produced larger fcc-Al grains. The formation of intermetallic compounds such as $Al_3Ni,\;Al_{11}Ce_3\;and\;Al_{11}La_3$ was suppressed by the addition of Cu or Fe. Among the three alloys examined, the highest Vickers hardness and compressive strength were obtained for $Al_{84}-Ni_{8.5}-M_{m6.5}Cu_1$ alloy, and related to the finest fcc-Al grain size attained from increased thermal stability with Cu addition.
The main purpose of this paper was to investigate the change of rapidly solidified microstructures and dispersoid behavior according to heat-treatment in the Al-Fe-V-Si-(Mn) alloys. It was found that (111) preferred orientation identified by X-ray diffraction and fine subgrain/large grain were observed in the rapidly solidified Al-Fe-V-Si-(Mn) alloys. Cell boundary of the zone A was composed of the microcrystalline, whereas that of the zone B was amorphous. Decomposition of the Al-Fe-V-Si-(Mn) alloys occurred at about $300^{\circ}C$. These alloys exhibited excellent thermal stability at the elevated temperature. Microstructure of the zone B was more stable than that of the zone A. The spherical dispersoid and 5-fold symmetry phase was also more thermally stable than the amorphous structure of cell boundary.
The spiral fluidity of graphite-dispersed Al-Si alloys has been investigated as a function of contents of Si and graphite, and of particle size of graphite. The dispersion of uncoated graphite is carred out by the vortex process of preheat-treated graphite into molten metal. The fluidity of hyper-eutectic Al-Si alloys is observed to the better than that of hypo-eutectic ones. In the case of graphite-dispersed Al-Si alloys they fluidity increases in hypo-eutectic alloys and decreases in hyper-eutectic ones in comparison with that of the corresponding undispersed alloys. Fluidity decreases with an increase of amount of dispersed graphite particles and inversely proportional to the total surface area of graphite particles.

Aluminium-silicon based casting alloys have received an attention for high electrical and thermal conductivity applications, however relatively low conductivity of Al-Si alloys often limits the application. Efforts have been made to develop new high conductivity aluminium casting alloys containing no or less silicon. In this study Al-Zn-Fe based alloys were selected as the new alloys, and the effect of Mg additions on their properties and casting characteristics were investigated. As the magnesium content was increased, the tensile strength of Al-2Zn-0.2Fe based alloy was remarkably increased, while the electrical conductivity was deteriorated. It was observed that the fluidity of the alloys was generally inversely proportional to the Mg content but the hot cracking resistance was rather proportional to it. Cooling curve analyses were carried out to measure the actual solidification range and dendrite coherency temperature.
The most widely utilized commercial, aluminum-casting alloys are based on an aluminum-silicon system due to its excellent casting, and good mechanical, properties. Unfortunately, these Al-Si based alloys are inherently poor energy conductors; compared to pure aluminum, because of their high silicon content. This means that they are not suitable for applications demanding high eletrical or thermal conductivity. Therefore, efforts are currently being made to develop new, highly-conductive aluminum-casting alloys containing no silicon. In this research, a number of properties; including potential for castability, were investigated for a number of Al-Fe-Zn-Cu alloys with varying Cu content. As the copper content was increased, the tensile strength of Al-Fe-Zn-Cu alloy tended to increase gradually, while the electrical conductivity was slightly reduced. Fluidity was found to be lower in high-Cu alloys, and susceptibility to hot-cracking was generally high in all the alloys investigated.
