Quinary Ti-Al-Si-C-N films were successfully synthesized on SUS 304 substrates and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system combining an arc ion plating technique and a DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique. In this work, the effect of Si content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Al-C-N films were systematically investigated. It was revealed that the microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings changed from a columnar to a nano-composite by the Si addition. Due to the nanocomposite microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings, the microhardness of The Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings significantly increased up to 56 GPa. In addition the average friction coefficients of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings were remarkably decreased with Si addition. Therefore, Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings can be applicable as next-generation hard-coating materials due to their improved hybrid mechanical properties.

The effects of $TiO_2$ addition on the electrical insulation of AlN ceramics with 1 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering aid have been investigated. Some of $TiO_2$ has reacted with AlN powders and transformed to fine TiN particles during sintering, which was uniformly dispersed along grain boundaries of AlN. At a high electrical field (500 V/mm), the resistivity of AlN ceramics with $TiO_2$ addition of 0.2 wt% increased about 1000 times from $3{\times}10^{10}{\Omega}cm$ to $3.1{\times}10^{13}{\Omega}cm$. Based on the impedance spectroscopy measurement, it was found that $TiO_2$ addition increased dramatically electrical resistivity of AlN grains much more than that of grain boundaries. Thus, $TiO_2$ was believed to dissolve inside AlN grains to suppress ionic conduction of Al vacancies. This suppressed ionic conduction by Ti incorporation into AlN grains seems to contribute to more electrically insulating AlN ceramics.
The effect of additives on the castability of the AC2BS aluminum alloy, which contains 35% recycled scrap, was investigated. For the wide utilization of the recycled scrap AC2BS aluminum alloy, the research results were compared to those with the AC2B virgin alloy, which is typical Al-Si-Cu alloy system. It was confirmed that the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B increased the ${\alpha}$-Al nucleation temperature during solidification and decreased the grain size through cooling curve and microstructural observations of the recycled alloy. It was also found that an addition of Al-10%Sr decreased the eutectic Si growth temperature during the solidification process and modified the shape of the eutectic Si of the recycled alloy. The characteristics of fluidity, shrinkage and solidification crack strength were evaluated. For the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap, both ${\alpha}$-Al grain refinement due to Ti-B and eutectic Si modifications due to Sr contributed to the improvement of the fluidity. The macro- shrinkage ratio increased with additions of both Al-10%Sr and Al-5%Ti-1%B and the micro-shrinkage ratio increased with the addition of Al-10%Sr but decreased with the addition of Al-5%Ti-1%B. The casting characteristics of TiB and Sr-treated AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap are similar to those of AC2B virgin alloy. The improvement of the solidification crack strength of the AC2BS aluminum alloy was possible by the reduction of the grain boundary the stress concentration through the enhancement by both ${\bullet}{\cdot}$-Al refinement and eutectic Si modification. More extensive use of the AC2BS aluminum alloy containing 35% recycled scrap can be expected in the future.

Effects of ceramic filler types and dose on the low temperature sintering and dielectric properties of ceramic/$CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ (CAS) glass composites were investigated. All of the specimens were sintered at $850{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ for 2 h, which conditions are required by the low-temperature co-firing ceramic (LTCC) technology. Ceramic fillers of $CaCO_3$, $Al_2O_3$, $CaCO_3-Al_2O_3$ mixture, and $CaCO_3-Al_2O_3$ compound ($CaAl_2O_4$), respectively, were used. The addition of $Al_2O_3$ yielded the crystalline phase of alumina, which was associated with the inhibition of sintering, while, $CaCO_3$ resulted in no apparent crystalline phase but the swelling was significant. The additions of $CaCO_3-Al_2O_3$ mixture and $CaAl_2O_4$, respectively, yielded the crystalline phases of alumina and anorthite, and the sintering properties of both composites increased with the increase of filler addition and the sintering temperature. In addition, the $CaAl_2O_4$/CAS glass composite, sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, demonstrated good microwave dielectric properties. In overall, all the investigated fillers of 10 wt% addition, except $CaCO_3$, yielded reasonable sintering (relative density, over 93 %) and low dielectric constant (less than 5.5), demonstrating the feasibility of the investigated composites for the application of the LTCC substrate materials.
[ ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ ] precursor was synthesised by sol-gel method using aluminum sulfate, sodium sulfate and sodium carbonate as law materials. The flaky ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ crystals were prepared by heating using precursor about $1,050^{\circ}C$. In this study, the effect of some transition-metal sulfate ($FeSO_4,\;SnSO_4,\;ZnSO_4$) addition have been investigated. When iron sulfate was added, it could see that act on impurities in crystal growth process. In case of tin sulfate, distribution of Platelets was very broad. When flaky ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ crystals were prepared zinc sulfate addition, thickness, size, and distribution of platelets was suited to industrial application. The average diameter of flaky ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ crystals was about 20 $\mu$m, and its thickness was about 0.3 $\mu$m. Increasing addition of zinc sulfate, thickness of ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ platelet was decreased.
Mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy are influenced by the size and distribution of primary Si. To investigate the effects of P addition and holding time, hypereutectic Al-Si alloys with various amount of P content were produced in the lab. Then, the size and distribution of primary Si were examined respectively. Mechanical properties of hardness, tensile strength and wear resistance were analyzed in conjunction with the microstructural variations in alloys.

Two atomized alloy powders were pre-compacted by cold and subsequently hot forged at temperatures ranging from 653K to 845K. The addition of Cu and Mg causes a decrease in the eutectic reaction temperature of Al-10Si-5Fe-1Zr alloy from 841K to 786K and results in a decrease of flow stress at the given forging temperature. TEM observation revealed that in addition to Al-Fe based intermetallics, $Al_2Cu$ and $Al_2CuMg$ intermetallics appeared. The volume fraction of intermetallic dispersoids increased by the addition of Cu and Mg. Compressive strength of the present alloys was closely related to the volume fraction of intermetallic dispersoids.
Fracture behavior and martensite substructure of Ni-36.5at.%Al alloy were investigated with the addition of vanadium which is known as scavenging element of grain boundary. The fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the EDX spectrometer was applied for composition analysis of fracture surfaces. The substructure of martensite was studied by transmission electron microscopy. By addition of vanadium, fracture surfaces show mixed modes of intergranular and transgranular fracture and more Al content is found on the grain boundaries. For Ni-36.5at.%Al alloy, the planar faults observed in the martensite plates are the internal twins. By increasing the vanadium content, the modulated structure with stacking faults and dislocations dominates while the twinned martensite disappears. The stacking fault is determined to be extrinsic due to the substitution of V for Al. It is concluded that the segregation of sulfur on the high-energy state stacking fault area suppresses the intergranular fracture.
The effects of scandium addition on the Al-6Si-2Cu Alloy were investigated. The Al-6Si-2Cu-Sc alloy was prepared by gravity die casting process. In this study, scandium was added at 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.8 wt%, and 1.0 wt%. The microstructure of Al-6Si-2Cu-Sc alloy was investigated using Optical Microscope, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, Electron Back Scatter Diffraction, and Transmission Electron microscope. The microstructure of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy with scandium added changed from dendrite structure to equiaxed crystal structure in specimens of 0.4 wt% Sc or more, and coarse needle-shape eutectic Si and β-Al5FeSi phases were segmented and refined. The nanosized Al3Sc intermetallic compound was observed to be uniformly distributed in the modified Al matrix.
Misch metal (rare earth element, Ce, La, Nd, Pr) which has large influence on high-temperature stability and toughness was added to the Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, and squeeze casting was used for Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys. The effect of applied pressure and misch metal additions on mechanical properties in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy by direct squeeze casting has been investigated. The applied pressure were 0 MPa(gravity casting), 25, 50 and 75 MPa. Squeeze-cast Al-5%Ni-5%Mg-(Mm) alloys had better mechanical properties than those of non-pressurized cast alloys because of the increased cooling rate by the application of pressure during solidification. By the addition of misch metal in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy, better combination of strength and elongation was obtained. The addition of 0.3%Mm in Al-5%Ni-5%Mg alloy improved the heat resistant property due to the formation of fine eutectic phases.
