  • In order to make high-purity ferro-manganese from $Mn_3O_4$ dust, the application of aluminothermy process to the reduction of $Mn_3O_4$ dust was investigated in previous work. The result showed the fact that can be obtained high purity ferro-manganese which have over about 93% of manganese content and lower impurities such as C, P, S than those of KS D3712 specification. The addition of silicon powder instead of aluminum powder was investigated as reductant in the thermite reaction process of $Mn_3O_4$ dust in this work because its production cost is lower than that of aluminum powder. In case of addition of silicon powder only as reductant, the experimental result showed the unstable ignition and no thermite reaction of mixture, but in case of simultaneous addition of silicon and aluminum powders as reductant, showed the fact that can be obtained high purity ferro-manganese which have much low content of impurities such as C, P, S component.

  • Aluminum dusts, from micro to nano-scale, are widely used in various applications such as propulsion and pyrotechnic compounds because of high burning rate. In this study, the pyrolysis hazard of aluminum dusts with different median size (sized by 70 nm, 100 nm, $6{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$) were investigated experimentally. The thermal decomposition characteristics of aluminum dusts with the variation of heating rate were investigated using TGA (Thermo gravimetric analysis) and was estimated the minimum ignition temperature from temperature of weight gain in nano and micro-sized aluminum dusts with different diameter. In the same condition of heating rate, the temperature of weight gain in aluminum dust layers increased with increasing of particle size and increased with increasing of heating rates in air. From the results, it was estimated that the pyrolysis hazard of aluminum dusts decrease with increasing of mean diameter.

  • The response characteristics of $H_2O_2$ monopropellant thrusters at a pulse mode were presented in this paper. A catalyst bed was fixed to $MnO_2$/$Al_2O_3$ to investigate the thruster design effect to response time. Three different thrusters (50 N class) having different injectors, ullage volumes, catalyst grain sizes, and reactor volumes were prepared to investigate the response characteristics. As a result, the ignition delay, pressure rising and tail-off time of case 2-2 thruster with 16-20 mesh catalyst size were 14, 108, 94 ms respectively, which were comparable to requirement of response time at commercial hydrazine thrusters.

  • In this study, the ignition temperature of the Al-Ti-C reaction system, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the TiC/Mg composite which produced by the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) followed by stir casting process were investigated. Mg based composite with uniformly dispersed 0, 10, 20, and 30 vol.% TiC were fabricated, and higher volume fraction of TiC reinforced composite showed superior compressive strength and wear resistance as compared with Mg matrix. It is attributed to the less contamination, defects, impurities in TiC/Mg composite by the in-situ SHS yield effective load transfer from the matrix to the reinforcement.

  • This study has focused on the possibility for recycling tailings from the Sangdong tungsten mine (TA) as admixture for concrete. TA has been accumulating for several decades in Sangdong, a region in Korea, and there is a growing demand for alternative uses for this hazardous substance. In particular, the use must be in accordance with the hazardous materials stipulations under the Korean waste control act. This study showed that TA presented pH of 8.0-9.3, 18.7-22.0% of water content, 2.7% of maximum ignition loss. The chemical composition of TA showed minute differences from each depth of sampling that represented approximately 50% of $SiO_2$ and 13% of both $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$. The chemical composition of Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb from mortar incorporating TA showed lower levels of hazardous materials which met the specifications of the waste control act in Korea. The TA mortar also appeared very effective for stabilizing/solidifying heavy metals particularly when used in conjunction with SG.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the enrichment and distribution patterns of naturally occurring potentially toxic elements in soils derived from black shales and slates. Soil samples were collected from the Chubu area covered with uranium-enriched black shales and slates of the Changri Formation of the Okchon Super Group, and analysed for multiple-elements using INAA, ICP-AES and AAS. Soil pH and loss-an-ignition were also measured. Trace element contents in black shale and slate of the Chubu area are relatively lower than those in black shales, and higher than those in black slates reported elsewhere (Chon, Jung, 1991; Chon et al., 1996). Soil pH values range from 3.5 to 6.5, and loss-an-ignition values are in the range from 3 to 10%. Potentially toxic elements including As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mo and U are highly enriched in residual soils with maximum content of $540{\mu}g/g$, $35,000{\mu}g/g$, $280{\mu}g/g$, $300{\mu}g/g$, $240{\mu}g/g$ and $860{\mu}g/g$, respectively. Significant concentrations of those elements were found in soils taken from the Tojangkol, the Chubu tunnel and the Meokti areas. Soils derived from black shales and slates, calcareous and phyllitic rocks, and intrusions were discriminated in terms of As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Sc and U contents. Enrichment index was calculated using the concentrations of As, Ba, Cr and Mo, and enrichment index map shows very similar trend with U distribution in soils.

  • In this study, in order to improve the ignitability of high energy aluminum powder, natural oxide films (alumina) were chemically removed, and instead nickel coat was applied. We used an electroless plating for nickel coating and confirmed quantitatively and qualitatively a time-dependent degree of nickel coating through analysis of surface by SEM/EDS. We also conducted element analysis by XRD and thermal properties by TGA/DSC in air oxidizer environment. There results explained the ignition enhancement mechanism of the nickel-coated aluminum powder in air. The difference between coated and un-coated aluminum powder, the effectiveness of coated powder has better ignitability.

  • Effects of coating treatment of metallic Cu, Ni-P film on $SiC_p$, for $SiC_p$/iron aluminide composites were studied. Porous hybrid preforms were fabricated by reactive sintering after mixing the coated $SiC_p$, Fe and Al powders. Then the final composites were manufactured by squeeze casting after pouring AC4C Al alloy melts in preforms. The change of reactive temperature, density, microstructure of the preforms and microstructure of the composites were investigated. The exprimental results were summarized as follows. The thickness of Cu and Ni-P metallic layer formed on $SiC_p$ by electroless plating method were about $0.5{\mu}m$ and coated uniformly. There was no remakable change in the ignition temperature with variation of the mixing ratio of Fe and Al powder while in the case of coated $SiC_p$ it was lower about $20^{\circ}C$ than in the non-coated $SiC_p$. The maximum reaction temperature increased with increasing Al contents, but decreased with increasing $SiC_p$ contents. Expansion ratio of preform after reactive sintering increased with amount of Cu coated $SiC_p$. In the case of Fe-70at.%Al, the expansion ratio was about 7% up to 8wt.% of $SiC_p$, addition but further addition of $SiC_p$, increased the ratio significantly. And in the case of Fe-50 and 60at.%Al, it was about 20% up to 16wt.% of $SiC_p$ addition and about 28% in 24wt.% of $SiC_p$, addition. The microstructures of compounds showed that the grains became finer as amount of $SiC_p$, and mixing ratio of iron powder increased and the shape of compounds was changed gradually from irregular to spheroidal.
