  • $(Ba_{1-x}Sr_{0.4}Ca_x)TiO_{3}$ (x=0.10, 0.15, 0.20) powders were prepared by the sol-gel method and BSCT thick films were fabricated by the screen-printing method. Their structural and dielectric properties were investigated with variation of composition ratio and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ doping contents. As results of the X-ray diffraction and microstructure analysis, the grain size of BSCT thick films was decreased with increasing $Al_{2}O_{3}$ amount. The thickness of BSCT thick films by 4-coating/drying is about $110{\sim}120{\mu}m$. The tunability increased with decreasing Ca content, and the BSCT(50/40/10) specimen doped with 1.0wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ showed the highest value of 12.94% at 5kV /cm.

  • Mechanical properties of 7xxx series Al metal matrix composite (MMC) powders containing different amounts of ceramic were investigated. The ceramic contents of the starting powders were 5 wt.% or 10 wt.%. The powders were uniaxially cold compacted using a cylindrical die with a compacting pressure of 250 MPa and were sintered at $620^{\circ}C$ in a dry $N_2$ atmosphere for 60 min. For the heat treatment, sintered parts were solution treated at $475^{\circ}C$ and aged at $175^{\circ}C$. Compression tests were conducted to reveal the effect of $Al_2O_3$ particle content on the mechanical properties of the composites. Fractography was examined using a scanning electron microscope.

  • A sample procedure has been described to room temperature synthesis, mesoporous aluminosilicate materials with strong surface acidity by using a cationic surfactnat cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTABr) as the template agent. All samples were charecterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and nitrogen adsorption. The crystallinity and surface area of MCM-41 type aluminosilicats decrease with decreasing of Si/Al ratio. The influence of the aluminum contents of MCM-41 on the coordination of Al and on the acidity is studied by $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia(TPD). It was shown that the incorporation of Al atoms into the framework causes increasing of acid site surface. And then Al atoms in the framework were incorporated tetrahedrally in structure, which gave a rise to cationic sites in the framework.

  • The microstructure and mechanical properties of hot-rolled Fe-9Mn-0.2C medium-manganese steels with different Al, Cu, and Ni contents were investigated in this study. Based on the SEM, XRD, and EBSD analysis results, the microstructure was composed of martensite, band-type delta ferrite, and retained austenite phases depending on the Al, Cu, and Ni additions. The tensile and Charpy impact test results showed that the sole addition of Al reduced significantly impact toughness by the presence of delta-ferrite and the decrease of austenite stability although it increased yield strength. However, the combined addition of Al and Cu or Ni provided the best combination of high yield strength and good impact toughness because of solid solution strengthening and increased austenite stability.

  • A powder-in-sheath rolling (PSR) process utilizing a copper alloy tube was applied to a fabrication of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced aluminum matrix composite. A copper tube with an outer diameter of 30 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm was used as a sheath material. A mixture of pure aluminum powders and CNTs with the volume contents of 1, 3, 5 vol% was filled in the tube by tap filling and then processed to 93.3% height reduction by a rolling mill. The relative density of the CNT/Al composite fabricated by the PSR decreased slightly with increasing of CNTs content, but showed high value more than 98%. The average hardness of the 5%CNT/Al composite increased more than 3 times, compared to that of unreinforced pure Al powder compaction. The hardness of the CNT/Al composites was some higher than that of the composites fabricated by PSR using SUS304 tube. Therefore, it is concluded that the type of tube affects largely on the mechanical properties of the CNT/Al composites in the PSR process.

  • Hard coatings are known to improve the performance of cutting tools in aggressive machining applications, such as high speed machining. New superhard Ti-Al-Si-W films, characterized by a nanocomposite nano-sized (Ti,Al,Si)N crystallites embedded in amorphous $Si_3 N_4$ matrix, could be successfully synthesized on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating(AIP) and sputtering method. The hardness of Ti-Al-Si-N film increased with incorporation of Si, and had the maximum value ~50 GPa at the Si content of 9 at.%, respectively. And the X-ray diffraction patterns of Ti-Al-Si-N films with various Si content is investigated. In this study, Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were applied to end-mill tools made of WC-Co material by a hybrid coating system. Cutting tests fir the high-hardened material (STD11,$H_R$)C62 and their performances in high speed cutting conditions were studied. Also, the tool wear and tool lift of Ti-Al-Si-N with various si(6, 9, 19) contents were measured.

  • In the present work, the effect of adding Ce on the corrosion behavior of Mg-4Al-2Sn-1Ca alloy was investigated. The studied alloys were fabricated by gravity casting method and a potentiodynamic polarization, A.C. impedance and hydrogen evolution tests were carried out in a 3.5% NaCl solution with pH 7.2 at room temperature to measure the corrosion properties of Mg-4Al-2Sn-1Ca-xCe alloys. The microstructure of the Mg-4Al-2Sn-1Ca alloy was composed of ${\alpha}$-Mg, Mg17Al12, Mg2Sn and CaMgSn phase. Also, a $Al_{11}Ce_3$ phase was newly formed by the addition of Ce. With an increase of the Ce contents, the microstructure became refined and the corrosion resistance improved.

  • AL072 is a potent anti-Legionella antibiotic produced by Streptomyces strain AL91. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AL072 against Legionella pneumophila was 0.2$\mu$g/ml. Bacterial growth was rapidly inhibited at the dose range between the MIC and 20 times of the MIC when the antibiotic was added at the mid-exponential phase. Ultrastructural changes in L. pneumophila were observed upon treatment with AL072. Under electron microscopical observation, the organisms treated with AL072 exhibited characteristic morphological changes in the cellular outer coat. Also irregular morphological changes, such as the formation of filamentous materials in the cytoplasm, an increase in the size and number of cytoplasmic vacuoles, the extruding of cytoplasmic contents, the formation of spheroplast and ghost cells, and blebbings in the cell wall were observed. Furthermore, immunoelectron microscopical observation of the group treated with the MIC showed that the immune complex attached mainly to the cell wall. The results of these experiments indicate that AL072, like the inhibitors of cell wall synthesis, act selectively on the cell wall of L. pneumophila.

  • Ceramic oxide layers successfully were formed on the surface of cast Al alloys with high Si contents using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process in electrolytes containing Na2SiO3, NaOH, and additives. The microstructure of the oxide layers was systematically analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), and energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis indicated that the PEO untreated high-silicon Al alloys (i.e., 17.1 and 11.7 wt.% Si) consist of Al, Si and Al2Cu phases whereas Al2Cu phase selectively disappeared after PEO treatment. PEO process yielded an amorphous oxide layer with few second phases including γ-Al2O3 and Fe-rich phases. The corrosion behaviors of high-silicon Al alloys treated by PEO process were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and other electrochemical techniques (i.e., open circuit potential and polarization curve). Electroanalytical studies indicated that high-silicon Al alloys treated by PEO process have greater corrosion resistance than high-silicon alloys untreated by PEO process.

  • This research describes effects of Si addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al-Cr based alloys prepared manufactured using gas atomization and SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) processes. The Al-Cr-Si bulks with high Cr and Si content were produced successfully using SPS sintering process without crack and obtained fully dense specimens close to nearly 100% T. D. (Theoretical Density). Microstructure of the as-atomized Al-Cr-Si alloys with high contents of Cr and Si was composed multi-phases with hard and thermally stable such as Al13Cr4Si4, AlCrSi, Al8Cr5 and Cr3Si intermetallic compounds. The average hardness values were 703 Hv for S5, 698 Hv for S10 and 824 Hv for S20 alloy. Enhancement of hardness value was resulted from the formation of the multi-intermetallic compound with hard and thermally stable and fine microstructure by the addition of high Cr and Si using rapid solidification and SPS process.
