Tungsten carbide has many industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperature, high hardness and good chemical stability. Because tungsten carbide is difficult to sinter, it is sintered with nickel or cobalt as a binder and is currently used in nozzles, cutting tools, and molds. Alumina is reported to be a viable binder for tungsten carbide due to its higher oxidation resistance and lower cost than nickel and cobalt. The ultrafine tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites were rapidly sintered in a high frequency induction heating active sintering unit. The microstructure and mechanical properties (fracture toughness and hardness) of the composites were investigated and analyzed by Vickers hardness tester and electron microscope. Since the high-frequency induction heating sintering method enables high-speed sintering, ultrafine composites can be prepared by preventing grain growth. In the tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites, the grain size of tungsten carbide increased with the amount of alumina participation. The hardness and fracture toughness of the tungsten carbide-5% graphene- x% alumina (x = 0, 5, 10,15) composites were 5.1, 8.6, 8.6, and 8.4 MPa-m1/2 and 2384, 2168, 2165, and 2102 kg/mm2, respectively. The fracture toughness increased without a significant decrease in hardness. Sinterability was improved by adding alumina to tungsten carbide-graphene.

Fe-Cr-Al and Fe-Cr-Al-Hf alloys prepared either by arc melting or by single roll casting(melt spinning) were exposed to air isothermally at 900~$1100^{\circ}C$. Whisker-like alumina was observed on the surface of the specimens when oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$, but convoluted alumina above $1000^{\circ}C$. All the Hf-free specimens and Hf-added specimens produced by single roll casting formed only external scale mainly composed of $Al_2O_3$ after oxidation at 900~$1100^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, but Hf-added specimen produced by arc melting formed Hf-rich internal oxides below the thin external $Al_2O_3$ scale except at $900^{\circ}C$. Most of the rapidly solidified Fe-Cr-Al alloys showed smaller weight gains than conventionally casted ones besides Hf-added one oxidized at $1100^{\circ}C$.
Aluminum hydrates were prepared by precipitation method using Al2(SO4)3$.$18H2O as a starting material and NH4OH as precipitation agent. The phases of aluminum hydrate were changed from amorphous aluminum hydrate to pseudo-boehmite of AlOOH form and bayerite, gibbsite, hydragillite and norstrandite of Al(OH)3 form with increasing pH. As pH increased, agglomeration phenomena were reduced. Aluminum hydrates of AlOOH and Al(OH)3 form represented dehydration of structural water near 175$^{\circ}C$ and 385$^{\circ}C$, and 280$^{\circ}C$, respectively. As the ratio of Al(OH)3 to AlOOH increased, specific surface area was reduced.
Fabrication possibility of low-shrinkage alumina without oxidation and wetting agent was presented on the basis of observation about oxidation behavior, microstructure and physical characteristics of such reaction agents free Al2O3-Al system. The composition less than Al 10w/o where Al can act as a sintering agent for Al2O3 was excluded. Under the condition of present experiments oxidation of Al2O3-Al system was dependent not on holding time but mainly on oxidation temperature. In thes case of Al powder not comminuted effectively during powder mixing of Al2O3-Al, columnar structure which would act as a hindrance to the densification during sintering developed more during oxidation with higher Al contents, and which made the fabrication of low-shrinkage Al2O3 ceramics impossible. If Al powder was comminuted effectively due to co-mixed Al2O3 characteristics, densification was improved because of no columnar structure and made the fabrication of sintered body with -2.7% dimensional change and 81% relative density possible. As a result, it is possible to fabricate dense low-shrinkage Al2O3 ceramics without oxidation and wetting agent under conditions such as smaller particle size of Al, Al contents below 50v/o, higher green density of Al2O3-Al compact and the use of Al2O3 powder used for high-density ceramics.
For the present study two alumina bodies were prepared. The sinter-aid alumina body(SAA) was made by conventional sinter-process using sintering additives of TiO2 & MgO/CaO and the reaction-bonded alumina (RBA) made from Al-Al2O3 mixed powder. A comparison was made between those two bodies and this investigation seeks to evaluate their microstructure, physical properties and material's reliability as well as their fracture behaviour. In spite of its considerable microstructural densification accompanied by sintering shrinkage, SAA is largely inferior to RBA in fracture strength. However, SAA shows a somewhat higher m-value than RBA in respect to the material's reliability, the Weibull modulus(m). RBA, which has high fracture strength, shows much longer lifetime under static loading than SAA. Though, as with m of fracture strength, the reliability(mt) of lifetime prediction in RBA is less high than of SAA.
Aluminum sec-butoxide was synthesized from aluminum foil and alcohol. The characteristics of the alumina powder prepared from the synthesized alkoxide by the Yoldas method were studied. As a result of measuring the synthesized aluminum sec-butoxide by GC, the purity of the synthesized alkoxide was 98.7% on the basis of commercial alkoxide and the yield was 78.5%. A127-MASNMR analysis shows that powders dried at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and $\alpha$-Al2O3 have 6-cordinated structure and ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 has 4-coordinated structure. The characteristics of alumina powder prepared from the synthisized alkoxide showed the same characteristics with the alumina powder prepared from the commercial alkoxide.
Micro-arc discharge oxidation (MDO) is a cost-effective plasma electrolytic process which can be used to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of Al-alloy parts by forming a alumina coating on the component surface. However, the MDO coated Al-alloy components often exhibit relatively high friction coefficients and low wear resistance fitted with many counterface materials, additionally, the pitting corrosion for the MDO coated AI-alloy components, especially for a thinner alumina coating, often occurs in atmosphere circumstance due to the porous alumina coats. Therefore, a duplex treatment, combining a MDO coated ahumina thin layer with a TiN coating, prepared by magnetron sputtering (MS), has been investigated. The Vicker's microhardness, pin-on-disc, electrochemical measurement, salt spray, XRD and SEM tests were used to characterize and analyze the treated samples. The work demonstrates that the MDO/MS coated samples have a combination of a very low friction coefficient and good wear resistance as well as corrosion since the micro-holes on alumina coating are partly or fully covered by TiN material.
Dimethyl ether(DME) was synthesized from synthesis gas by a one-step process in which a hybrid catalyst was used. The hybrid catalyst consisted of Cu-ZnO-$Al_2O_3$ for the methanol synthesis reaction and aluminum phosphate or $H_3PO_4$-modified $\gamma$-alumina for the methanol dehydration reaction. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, FT-IR and $NH_3$-TPD. From the XRD analysis, it was verified that the aluminum phosphate was successfully synthesized. The specific surface areas of the synthesized aluminum phosphates were varied with the ratio of P/Al. The hybrid catalyst in which P/Al ratio of the aluminum phosphate was 1.2 showed the highest CO conversion of 55% and DME selectivity of 70%. There was no remarkable decrease in catalytic activity with the phosphoric acid treatment of $\gamma$-alumina. However, when treated with concentrated phosphoric acid(85%), the catalytic activity and DME selectivity decreased.
From alumina powder and TEOS, $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder for reaction-sintered mullite was synthesized by heterogeneous coagulation and surface coating, and investigated the mullitization reaction and sintering behavor of these powders. In $\alpha$-Al2O3/SiO2 composite powder prepared by heterogeneous coagulation, each alumina particles were surrounded by silica particles of 50~60 nm in size. And the alumina particles in composite powder prepared by surface coating were coated by uniform silica layer with thickness of 50 nm. In both methods, mullitization reaction was completed at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 3h, and specimen sintered above 145$0^{\circ}C$ was about 95% fo the theoretical relative density. Mullite grains formed from the reaction with composite powders showed spherical shape with a size of 1~2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

Alumina dispersion strengthening copper(ADSC) alloy has great potential for use in many industrial applications such as contact supports, frictional break parts, electrode materials for lead wires, and spot welding with relatively high strength and good conductivity. In this study, we investigated the oxidation behavior of ADSC alloys. These alloys were fabricated in forms of plate and round type samples by surface oxidation reaction using Cu-0.8Al, Cu-0.4Al-0.4Ti, and Cu-0.6Al-0.4Ti(wt%) alloys. The alloys were oxidized at $980^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, 2 h, and 4 h in ambient atmosphere. The microstructure was observed with an optical microscope(OM) and a scanning electron microscope(SEM) equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS). Characterization of alumina was carried out using a 200 kV field-emission transmission electron microscope(TEM). As a result, various oxides including Ti were formed in the oxidation layer, in addition to ${\gamma}$-alumina. The thickness of the oxidation layer increased with Ti addition to the Cu-Al alloy and with the oxidation time. The corrected diffusion equation for the plate and round type samples showed different oxidation layer thickness under the same conditions. Diffusion length of the round type specimen had a value higher than that of its plate counterpart because the oxygen concentration per unit area of the round type specimen was higher than that of the plate type specimen at the same diffusion depth.
