Fabrication of SiCp/Al Alloy Composites by In-situ Vacuum Hot Press Process (In-situ Vacuum Hot Press 공정을 이용한 SiCp/Al 복합재료의 제조)

  • SiCp/pure Al and SiCp/2024Al MMCs were fabricated by in-situ VHP process designed specially just in this study which is composed of the vacuum hot press at range from R.T. to $500^{\circ}C$ and the continuous extrusion without canning process at $520^{\circ}C$. It was investigated the effect of SiC particle size, volume fraction and extrusion ratio on the tensile properties and micro structure in auf composites. In case of the 10:1 extrusion ratio, but SiCp/pure Al and SiCp/2024Al composites were shown a sound appearance and a good micro structure without crack of SiCp as well as uniform distribution of SiCp. However, in case of the 16:1 extrusion ratio, the number of cracked SiC particles more than increased in a higher volume fraction composite and 2024Al matrix composite compared with pure Al matrix one. The tensile strength of the composites reinforced smaller SiCp was higher than that of the bigger SiCp reinforced in same volume fraction and extrusion ratio.

Effect of Porosity on the Fracture Toughness and Electrical Conductivity of Pressureless Sintered ${\beta}-SiC-ZrB_2$ Composites (무가압소결(無加壓燒結)한 ${\beta}-SiC-ZrB_2$ 복합체(複合體)의 파괴인성(破壞忍性)과 전기전도성(電氣傳導性)에 미치는 기공(氣孔)의 영향)

  • The effect of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ additives on the microstructure, mechanical and electrical properties of ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites by pressureless sintering were investigated. The ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ ceramic composites were pressureless sintered by adding 4, 8, 12wt.% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ powder as a liquid forming additives at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed mostly of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $ZrB_2$ and weakly $\alpha$-SiC(4H), $\beta$-SiC(15R) phase. The relative density of composites was lowered by gaseous products of the result of reaction between $\beta$-SiC and $Al_{2}O_{3}$ therefore, porosity was increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents. The fracture toughness of composites was decreased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents, and showed the maximum value of $1.4197MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composite added with 4wt.% $Al_{2}O_{3}$ additives. The electrical resistivity of ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composite was increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}$ contents, and showed positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • The $Al_2$$O_3$-SiC composite powder was prepared by Self-propagating High-Temperature Synthesis(SHS) process using $SiO_2$Al and C powders as raw material. The effects of the molar ratio in raw material, compaction pressure, initial temperature of reactants on the products and combustion process were studied. Self-propagating high temperature synthesis of $SiO_2$/Al/C system should be preheated above $400^{\circ}C$ owing to the low combustion temperature. As the result of the combustion reaction, the purity of final product became better than that of reactants. In this system, the optimum molar ratio of $SiO_2$:Al:C was 3.0:4.0:6.0. The free carbon was removed by roasting at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30min. In this study, pressureless sintering was very dffective both for controlling the disintegration of specimen with powder bed and for obtaining dense sintered-body at $1700^{\circ}C$. The sintered-body produced with hot-pressing was about 98% of the theoretical relative density.

  • An Al-composite material was fabricated with using the rheocompocasting process and the microstructure of the Al-Cu/SiCp composite material was investigated depending on the stirring times and the amount of Ti additions. The distribution of SiC dispersion shows the good result at the stirring time of 30 min. The degree of microdistribution of the $Al_2Cu$ and SiCp is improved when the amount of Ti addition is increased. At the compositon of 0.3%Ti, the primary solid is the compound of $Al_3Ti$ and no exist of the SiCp and $Al_2Cu$ phase around the primary $Al_3Ti$. In the process of compositization, SiCp is found at the primary and final solid parts and is found at the final solid part after remelting. $Al_2Cu$ and SiCp are distributed around and outside of dendrite or independently after remelting, which is different from the process of compositization.

  • PVA/GLA/$Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ composite membranes were prepared through the reaction polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with glutaraldehyde (GLA) as a cross-linking agent and subsequently adding aluminum silicate ($Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$) as an inorganic material. The water uptake decreased as the GDL contents increased due to cross-linking process of PVA with GDL, and the ion conductivity increased as the $Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ contents increased in PVA/GLA/$Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ composite membranes. The cross-linking structure of the polymers was confirmed using IR and the tendency of water uptake. The thermal analysis of the copolymers was carried out by TGA. TGA results showed that PVA/GLA composite membrane were more heat-resistant than PVA due to the cross-linking of PVA, and the heat stability of the composite membranes improved much more as the concentration of $Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ increased. Membranes prepared in this study seem to be have thermal stability and increase a tendency of the cation conductivity up to $60^{\circ}C$, but to be exhibit lower performance tendency at over $90^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is necessary to do more aggressive effort to explore the possibility of application as an ion-conductive composite electrolyte.

NANO-SIZED COMPOSITE MATERIALS WITH HIGH PERFORMANCE

  • Ceramic based nanocomposite, in which nano-sized ceramics and metals were dispersed within matrix grains and/or at grain boundaries, were successfully fabricated in the ceramic/cerarnic and ceramic/metal composite systems such as $Al_2O_3$/SiC, $Al_2O_3$/$Si_3N_4$, MgO/SiC, mullite/SiC, $Si_3N_4/SiC, $Si_3N_4$/B, $Al_2O_3$/W, $Al_2O_3$/Mo, $Al_2O_3$/Ni and $ZrO_2$/Mo systems. In these systems, the ceramiclceramic composites were fabricated from homogeneously mixed powders, powders with thin coatings of the second phases and amorphous precursor composite powders by usual powder metallurgical methods. The ceramiclmetal nanocomposites were prepared by combination of H2 reduction of metal oxides in the early stage of sinterings and usual powder metallurgical processes. The transmission electron microscopic observation for the $Al_2O_3$/SiC nanocomposite indicated that the second phases less than 70nm were mainly located within matrix grains and the larger particles were dispersed at the grain boundaries. The similar observation was also identified for other cerarnic/ceramic and ceramiclmetal nanocornposites. The striking findings in these nanocomposites were that mechanical properties were significantly improved by the nano-sized dispersion from 5 to 10 vol% even at high temperatures. For example, the improvement in hcture strength by 2 to 5 times and in creep resistance by 2 to 4 orders was observed not only for the ceramidceramic nanocomposites but also for the ceramiclmetal nanocomposites with only 5~01%se cond phase. The newly developed silicon nitride/boron nitride nanocomposites, in which nano-sized hexagonal BN particulates with low Young's modulus and fracture strength were dispersed mainly within matrix grains, gave also the strong improvement in fracture strength and thermal shock fracture resistance. In presentation, the process-rnicro/nanostructure-properties relationship will be presented in detail. The special emphasis will be placed on the understanding of the roles of nano-sized dispersions on mechanical properties.

Creep Behavior of Hot Extruded Al-5% SiC Composite Powder

  • The creep behavior of Al-5vol.% SiC composite was investigated. The composite powder was produced by mechanical milling and hot extruded at $450^{\circ}C$ at ratio of 16:1. A creep test was carried out at a constant load at 598, 648, and 673 K. Using the steady-state equations, the threshold stress and the stress exponent of the creep as a function of temperature were determined. The stress exponent was found to be 3 at the temperature of 673 K and 8 at 598 and 648 K. The dependency of the threshold stress to temperature obeys the Arrhenius relationship with the energy term of $29\;kJ\;mole^{-1}$.
