  • In order to investigate the behavior of fatigue crack growth of SiC-particulate- reinforced Al-Si alloy composites, fatigue tests using single edge notched tension(SENT) specimens were performed. Composite materials were manufactured by using both permanent die casting and extrusion processes with different volume fractions of $10\%\;and\;20\%$. $SiC_p-reinfurced$ Al-Si composites showed the increased levels of threshold stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, for the increased volume fractions of SiC particles, which implies the increased fatigue crack growth resistance at the threshold or low ${\Delta}K$ levels, compared to the unreinforced Al-Si alloy. In the Paris region, however, the composites showed the increased rate of crack growth resulting in the unfavorable effects on the fatigue crack growth resistance. Critical stress intensity factor range at unstable crack growth leading to final fracture decreased as the volume fraction of SiC particle increased, because of the reduced fracture toughness of the composites. Extruded materials showed higher threshold and critical values than the cast materials.

  • The electrical resistivity and mechanical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed ${\beta}$-SiC+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$(6:4wt%). In this microstructures. no reactions were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$, and the relative density is over 97.6% of the theoretical density. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed mostly of a $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$ and weakly $\beta$-SiC(15R) phase. The fracture toughness decreased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ contents and showed the highest for composite added with 4wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ additives. The electrical resistivity increased with increased $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ contents because of the increasing tendency of pore formation according to amount of liquid forming additives $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$. The electrical resistivity of composites is all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • A wear behavior of electroless (Ni-P-X, X: SiC, $Al_2O_3$, Diamond) composite coating layers, formed under various conditions on commerical grade low carbon steel, has been investigated using Taber abrasion tester and scanning electron microscope. Several factors, which are type of particles, co-deposited content, particle size, distribution of particles and heat-treatment, influenced the wear resistance. The wear resistance of the composited coating layers after heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was increased 70 times with diamond, 15 times with SiC and 8 times with $Al_2O_3$, compared with the electroless nickel plating layer without heat-treatment.

  • SiC fibers were coated with Cu, Ag and Ni metallic thin films by magnetron sputtering in order to improve wetting properties between Al matrix and SiC fiber. The wetting behavior of metal coated SiC fiber by pure Al has been studied at $670^{\circ}C{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ range for $10{\sim}90min$. under vacuum atmosphere. Besides, the effect of coated film thickness on the wettability has been investigated. The wetting behavior and interfacial reaction between Al and SiC fibers were analysed with optical microscope and SEM (scanning electron microscope). The wetting behavior of the as-received SiC fiber with Al melt was not uniform, indicated by the contact angles from less than $90^{\circ} to more Al melt was appeared in the initial stage of reation. It was considered that the metallic thin film played an important role in reducing the interfacial free energy and breaking down the aluminum oxide film by eutectic reaction with Al melt. However the wettability of Ni coated SiC fiber was not improved as much as that of Cu or Ag coated SiC fiber. The improvement of wettability by coating thickness is clearly showed in $1{\mu}m$ coated SiC fiber compared with $0.25{\mu}m$ coated SiC.

  • Tribologcal property of the ceramics used in severe condition was investigated and both $Al_2O_3$ ball and Al/SiC composite made by thermal spray process[TSP] were used as a specimen in this study. Four kinds of material couple in ball and disk specimens were tested in the dry condition by using ball-on-disk type tribo-tester. Friction coefficient, surface roughness, wear rate, and photograph of the worn surface were investigated. Generally, High SiC contents[$40{\sim}50%$] specimens showed very low friction coefficient below 0.05 and little wear rate in dry condition. And also, low SiC contents[0%] specimens showed a moderate wear rate and high coefficient of friction at the same condition.

  • The composites were fabricated 61 vol.%$\alpha$-$\alpha$-SiC and 39vol.% WC powders with the liquid forming additives of 12wt% $Al_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ by pressureless annealing at 1700, 1800, 190$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(2H), WC, and YAG(Al$_{5}$ Y$_3$O$_{12}$ ) crystal phase. The relative density, the flexural strength, fracture toughness and Young's modulus showed respectively the highest value of 99.4%, 375.76㎫, 5.79㎫ㆍm$\frac{1}{2}$, and 106.43㎬ for composite by pressureless annealing temperature 190$0^{\circ}C$ at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 1.47${\times}$10$^{-3}$ $\Omega$$.$cm for composite by pressureless annealing temperature 190$0^{\circ}C$ at $25^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the $\alpha$-SiC-WC composites was all positive temperature cofficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25^{\circ}C$ to 50$0^{\circ}C$.

  • Numerous researchers have observed the bubble formation from C/C composite at high temperature (1300$^{\circ}C$∼1700$^{\circ}C$). According to thermodynamic calculation, the bubble can be formed at the temperatures above 1500$^{\circ}C$ in the case of SiC coated C/C composite. However, the bubble below 1500$^{\circ}C$ could not be explained. Therfore, in an effort to explain the low temperature bubble formation, the effects of inhibitors such as B, Al, Zr and Si were thermodynamically investigated along with hydrogen and water vapor impurities resolved in C/C composite and SiC coating layer.

  • The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of SiC particle size(50, 100 ${\mu}m$) and additional elements such as Si, Cu and Ti on aging behavior in Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti)/SiCp composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration method using hardness and wear test, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The peak aging time in Al-5Mg-X(Si, Cu, Ti)/SiCp(50, 100 ${\mu}m$) composites is shorter than Al-5Mg-0.3Si alloy. The peak aging time of 50 ${\mu}m$ SiC particle reinforced Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti) composites is shorter than those of 100 ${\mu}m$ SiC particle reinforced of Al-5Mg-X(Si,Cu,Ti) composites. The Al-5Mg-0.3Si-0.1Cu-0.1Ti/SiCp(50 ${\mu}m$) composites aged at $180^{\circ}C$ has higher hardness and better wear resistance than any other aged composite. The aging effect is promoted by the addition of Si and Cu in Al-5Mg/SiCp composites, so the wear resistance of Al-5Mg/SiCp composites with Si and Cu elements is enhanced by the aging treatment.

  • A nondestructive ultrasonic technique is presented for estimating the reinforcement volume fractions of particulate composites. The proposed technique employs a theoretical model which accounts for composite microstructures, together with a measurement of ultrasonic velocity to determine the reinforcement volume fractions. The approach is used for a wide range of SiC particulate reinforced Al matrix ($SiC_p/Al$) composites. The method is considered to be reliable in determining the reinforcement volume fractions. The technique could be adopted in a production unit for the quality assessment of the metal matrix particulate composite extrusions.
