The Effects of Airline Deregulation: A Comparative Analysis

  • Purpose - The purpose of this study is to explore and examine the effects of airline deregulation in the United States and South Korea as a comparative analysis. The study focuses on identifying the purposes of airline deregulation and analyzing its benefits and consequences. Research Design, Data, and Methodology - This is a case study, a comparative method, which analyzes and measures the benefits and disadvantages of airline deregulation in both the United States and South Korea. Results - Airline deregulation removed unnecessary and ineffective government controls, resulting in more efficient airline industries in both countries. However, the negative consequences are much greater than the benefits of airline deregulation. Conclusion - The purpose of airline deregulation was to foster an efficient and effective environment in airline industry, and clear evidence of the positive intended effects of airline deregulation e.g., increasing domestic competition, decreasing airfare, increasing productivity, and removing unnecessary government regulations in the beginning of airline deregulation. However, the current state of airline industry in both countries depicts only the consequences of airline deregulation.

항공자유화정책상 상용고객우대제도의 제휴성과와 국제경쟁에 관한 연구 (Open Skies Policy : A Study on the Alliance Performance and International Competition of FFP)

  • 국제운송에 있어서 항공자유화 정책(open skies police)은 하늘의 자유 또는 하늘의 개방이란 의미를 내포하고 있다. 규범적으로 여러 형태의 운송권을 타 국가에 허용하는 개방 정책이나 국제 항공운송에 있어서 자유경쟁 정책이다. 미국의 경우, 1978년 항공규제완화 이후 경쟁력을 갖춘 대형 항공사들이 시장 기회가 많은 국제 항공시장에서 경쟁할 수 있도록 하기위해 네델란드와 항공자유화 협정을 체결한 것을 시작으로 많은 국가들이 항공자 유화 협정을 맺고 있으며, 우리나라의 경우는 20여개국과 항공자유화 협정을 체결하고 있는 상태이다. 상용고객우대제도(Frequent Flyer Program : FFP)는 미국 정부의 항공법 규제 완화 이후 항공 운임 전략의 일환으로 포괄적 마케팅 제휴의 한 부분이다. 자사 항공편을 이용하는 고객을 회원제로 관리하는 제도로서, 승객들의 탑승이나 기타 이용 실적에 따라 마일리지를 부여하여 누적된 마일리지가 일정한 기준에 도달하면 다양한 유형적 보상을 실시하는 개념이다. 상용고객 우대제도는 초창기에는 고객확보를 위한 마케팅 중심으로 형성되었으나, 항공사간의 치열한 경쟁으로 인해 경영이 점점 더 어려워지고 있는 상황에서 항공사들은 상용고객우대제도를 항공사 경영성과를 높이는 마케팅의 중요한 전략의 수단으로 활용하고 있다. 따라서 항공사들은 충성고객을 확보하기 위해 고객의 니즈를 효과적으로 파악할 필요가 있다고 판단한다. 항공사 상용고객우대제도에 따른 성과가 국제 경쟁에 미치는 영향은 다양하게 나타날 수 있다. 첫째, 노선망을 확대를 통해 항공 시장을 확보할 수 있다. 둘째, 운항빈도를 증대시킴에 따라 고객에게 항공 상품의 공급 능력을 증대시키게 될 수 있을 것이다. 셋째, 새로운 시장에 우선적으로 진입함으로써 경쟁 항공사를 견제하는 효과가 나타날 것 이라고 생각한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 항공사 상용고객우대제도에 대한 실증적 연구는 매우 미비하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 상용고객우대제도의 전략적 제휴 유형을 검토한 후 이의 제휴 성과와 국제경쟁에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 한다. 주요 국가들의 항공사 전략적 제휴는 항공자유화 정책상 세계적인 추세이다. 우리나라의 경우에도 국적 항공사들의 발전과 경쟁력 확보를 위해서는 보다 더 현실적인 항공자유화 협정이 진행되어야 할 것이다. 본 논문은 항공자유화 정책 상 항공사 상용고객우대제도의 제휴 성과와 국제경쟁에 관한 연구이다. 본 연구에서는 5개 글로벌 제휴 그룹(star, oneworld, wings, qualiflyer, skyteam)을 대상으로 선정하여 제휴 그룹의 항공사가 보유한 자원구조와 정보기술수준이 제휴 유형에 미치는 성과에 대한 실증 연구를 실시하고자 하였으며 가설 검정을 위해 일원분산분석과 회귀분석을 사용하였다. 규모가 큰 대형항공사 이거나 중소 규모의 지역 항공사일지라도 세계적인 네트워크 와 조직력을 갖춘 제휴 그룹에 참여하는 항공사는 높은 성과와 국제 경쟁력을 확보할 수 있다고 판단한다. 항공사 승객의 경우, 회원 가입항공사의 호텔과 렌트카, 면세점, 여행사 등의 제휴 네트워크를 활용하여 항공사 탑승 이외의 마일리지 획득하는 것외에도 관련된 서비스 혜택에 대한 관심과 선호도가 높으므로, 우리나라의 항공사들은 항공사간 제휴뿐 만 아니라 호텔 등 타 산업과의 다각적으로 제휴를 통해 공격적 마케팅을 실행해야 한다.

고객 충성도 및 항공사 이미지 형성에 기내 서비스품질이 미치는 영향 (The Effect of the Cabin Service Quality on Customer Loyalty and Airline Image)

  • The cabin service quality expected by customers during the air travel can be the top priority to choose an airline. Customers' perception about cabin service quality evaluation are important for developing differentiated cabin service strategies of airlines, so this study aims to analyze the effect of the cabin service quality on airline image and customer loyalty. For achieving this purpose, literature study and empirical study on cabin service, customer loyalty and airline image were performed together. As a results of research, a high level of the cabin service quality provided by airlines significantly influenced positive images of airlines and customer loyalty. And customers' positive image towards airlines practically had a substantial influence on the improvement of customer loyalty. These study results would help in creating positive images of airlines and securing customer loyalty by developing differentiated and improved cabin service quality strategies of each airline in the limitless competition of the aviation service industry.

항공사승무원 상사의 변혁적리더십이 고객지향성에 미치는 영향: 조직몰입의 매개효과 검증을 중심으로 (The Impact of Transformational Leadership of Airline Flight Attendants Manager on Customer Orientation: Testing the Mediating Effects of Organizational Commitment)

  • Recently, the airline industry has grown tremendously, and competition among airlines has intensified. Therefore, the importance of airline's service quality has been greatly emphasized. The human service provided by the airline is the biggest service the customer feels, so the customer orientation of the flight attendant is very important. The aim of this study was to identify the mediating effects of organizational commitment on the relationship among transformational leadership and customer orientation. As a results of the study, transformational leadership had positive significant effects on organizational commitment and job customer orientation. The results of this study imply that the organizational commitment play significant mediating role between transformational leadership and customer orientation.

세계민항계의 최적 동향과 우리나라 복수민항체제의 발전방향 (The Recent Trend in the World Air Transport Market and a Two-Airline Policy in Korea)

  • Deregulation privatization regionalism and globalization are the specific examples of the recent trends in the world air transport market. As encouraged by the international trends and the domestic policy of promoting market mechanism Korean has been driving a two-airline policy since 1989. But due to the absence of experience and philosophy about the airline co-mpetition both Korean government and the two airlines have been criticized for failing to set fair-competition rules and for struggling to secure air service rights regardless of national interest. Therefore this study shows the costs and benefits of a two-airline policy in a small count-ry reviews the empirical studies about the cost structure of American and Canadian airlines and analyzes the economic consequences of allocating air service rights between two airlines. The policy recommendations are (1) removing government restrictions and expanding ai-rport facilities to develop the domestic market (2) retaining the two-airline policy in the in-ternational market (3) increasing traffic density rather than expanding network for the small airline (4) improving comparative advantage through a global alliance and a technological innovation for the big airline and (5) building an official committee for co-ordinating the two airlines' interests.

Airline In-flight Meal Demand Forecasting with Neural Networks and Time Series Models

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce a more efficient forecasting technique, which could help result the reduction of cost in removing the waste of airline in-flight meals. We will use a neural network approach known to many researchers as the “Outstanding Forecasting Technique”. We employed a multi-layer perceptron neural network using a backpropagation algorithm. We also suggested using other related information to improve the forecasting performances of neural networks. We divided the data into three sets, which are training data set, cross validation data set, and test data set. Time lag variables are still employed in our model according to the general view of time series forecasting. We measured the accuracy of our model by “Mean Square Error”(MSE). The suggested model proved most excellent in serving economy class in-flight meals. Forecasting the exact amount of meals needed for each airline could reduce the waste of meals and therefore, lead to the reduction of cost. Better yet, it could enhance the cost competition of each airline, keep the schedules on time, and lead to better service.

중소형 지방공항의 건축계획을 위한 기초자료 연구 -항공수요 및 여객이용시설 실태 분석을 중심으로- (A Study on Basic Data for the Architectural Plan of Small and medium-sized Local Airports - Focused on Analysis of Airline Demands and the Actual Conditions of Passenger Facilities -)

  • Small and medium-sized local airports have suffered from chronic operating deficits due to many factors except for large airports in Incheon, Gimpo, Jeju and Gimhae. These small and medium-sized local airports have currently been degraded to inefficient airports handling the significantly lower airline demand than their carrying capacities. In this context, this study conducted a survey on the actual conditions of the airline demand in small and medium-sized local airports for the last 10 years after the opening of the Korea Train eXpress and investigated the causes and actual conditions of an increase and a decrease in the airline demand. In addition, it analyzed the functionality, convenience and economic feasibility, competition elements in comparison with other means of transportation, and the actual competitive conditions of local airports. It investigated facility improvements through a field visit for local airports and analyzed the performance rate of passenger demands and the use rate of terminal facilities according to a change in the airline demand. This study aimed to provide basic data in the architectural planning field, needed to establish a plan for the airport revitalization of local airports with the results of an analysis on the actual conditions of small and medium-sized local airports.

항공사 제휴의 법적 규제 (Legal Constraint of Airline Alliance)

  • 1980년대 도입된 항공사 상용고객우대제도는 항공운송산업에서 가장 성공적인 마케팅 도구였으며, 법적인 규제에도 불구하고 오늘날 항공사들 간 전략적 제휴의 주요수단이 되었다. 또한 세계항공운송시장의 극심한 경쟁으로 항공사들의 제휴 형태가 양자 간 제휴에서 그룹 간 범세계적 제휴로 변모해나가고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 범세계적 제휴 그룹들의 추세와 특성을 살펴보면서 항공사 상용고객우대제도의 제휴 유형을 분석하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 급변하는 경영환경에 처한 국내 양항공사들에게 상용고객우대제도 제휴의 이점과 함께 경영시사점을 제시하고자 한다.

A Study on the Effect of Storytelling Marketing on Brand Image and Brand Attitude

  • Purpose - This study will investigate and identify the relationship between brand image, brand attitude and intent to purchase based on subjects that have remembered or watched more than one storytelling marketing ad related to airlines. The purpose of the project is to secure market competitiveness by presenting the basis for and use of the marketing strategy using storytelling, which can capture the goodwill of the aerospace competition market in the future. Research, design, data, and methodology - Prior to the research model and hypothesis testing phase, a verification factor analysis was conducted to assess internal consistency among each measurement item and to ensure reliability and validity of the measurement tool. Further, the organization was assessed for validity by calculating the mean variance estimation (AVE) and the construction concept reliability (CCR) through a positive factor analysis. Hypothesis verification was analyzed through a structural equation model, and each concept set in the hypothesis was entered as a potential variable, and each measurement item was entered as an observation variable. Results - Airline's storytelling marketing has a significant impact on the brand image and two emotional and cognitive responses have been shown to influence the brand image. In addition, airline storytelling marketing has a significant impact on brand attitudes and airline storytelling marketing derived from factor analysis has shown two emotional and cognitive responses to brand attitudes. Conclusions - The parts derived based on the research results show that storytelling marketing has a strong influence on the airline's brand image and attitude, and that it is necessary for airlines to have a brand image and attitude. Also, forming a favorable brand image has a significant impact on brand attitudes. We believe that by presenting basic data to the aviation industry in future research on airline storytelling, we will be able to increase understanding and contribution to development of storytelling marketing in aviation.

항공서비스에 대한 고객만족이 거래지속의도에 미치는 영향에 있어서 성별의 역할 (The Influence of Customer Satisfaction on Customer Loyalty and the Moderating Effect of Gender)

  • Purpose - Customer satisfaction has been considered important as a way to retain current customers. Specifically, the retention of current customers through customer satisfaction has been considered important in an industry where competition between companies is fierce. Major Korean airlines have confronted fierce competition with the growth of low cost carriers (LCCs). In order to survive, these airlines need to retain their customers. This research aims to investigate the relationships between customer satisfaction and the customer intention to remain loyal. Moreover, this study examines how the influence of customer satisfaction on customer loyalty is moderated by gender. Research design, data, and methodology - A regression model is developed in which customer satisfaction, gender, and an interaction of satisfaction and gender are predictors and the customer's intention to remain loyal is a dependent variable. To analyze this research model, data were collected from 402 university students taking a marketing class in universities in Seoul, Chung-Cheong province, and Kangwon province. After eliminating data from students who had never flown and data with missing values, a final sample of 201 was analyzed. The hypotheses were tested using SPSS 21.0. Internal reliability was supported by the results of Cronbach's α. Multiple regression was performed. Results - Empirical results showed that customer satisfaction toward the airline's service had a positive influence on the customer intention to remain loyal to the airlines. Moreover, this influence was moderated by gender. More specifically, a male customer's intention to remain loyal was more determined by his satisfaction toward airline service than a female customer's. Conclusions - This research contributes to the aviation service marketing literature by showing how customer satisfaction influences customer intention to remain loyal and how this influence is moderated by gender. More specifically, male customer loyalty is more determined by airline service satisfaction than female customers. These results have manager implications for major Korean airlines in terms of customer satisfaction and gender as ways to enhance customer retention.
