  • In this study, flutter analyses for supercritical airfoil have been conducted in transonic region. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics (CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed static and dynamic responses of supercritical airfoil. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) and SST ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ turbulence models are solved for unsteady flow problems. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of cascades for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Also, flow-induced vibration (FIV) analyses for various supercritical airfoil models have been conducted. Detailed flutter responses for supercritical are presented to show the physical performance and vibration characteristics in various angle of attack.

  • The wake behavior of extended flat plate and serration in the trailing edge of S809 airfoil is presented in this experimental study using wind tunnel testing. The clustering of wind turbines in wind parks has recently been a pressing issue, due to the expected increase in power output and deciding the number of wind turbines to be installed. One of the prominent factors which influence the performance of the subsequent wind turbines is the downstream wake characteristics. A series of wind tunnel investigations were performed to assess the downstream near wake characteristics of the S809 airfoil at various angles of attack corresponding to the Reynolds Number Re = 2.02 × 105. These experimental results revealed the complex nature of the downstream near wake characteristics featuring substantial asymmetry arising out of the incoherent flow separations prevailing over the suction and the pressure sides of the airfoil. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the wake width and the downstream velocity ratio decrease with an increase in the angle of attack. Nonetheless, the dissipation length and downstream velocity ratio increases proportionally in the downstream direction. Additionally, attempts were made to understand the physical nature of the near wake characteristics at 1C, 2C, 3C and 4C downstream locations.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the low speed airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid compressible flow analysis. The Goradia integral method is adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar and turbulent flows. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. The analysis of the separated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered by expressing its geometry using the formula of Summey and Smith when no separation occurs. The computational efficiency is verified by comparing the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

  • An active flow control technique using blowing and distributed suction on low Reynolds airfoil is investigated. Simultaneous blowing and distributed suction can recirculate the jet flow mass, and reduce the penalty to propulsion system due to avoiding dumping the jet mass flow. Energy is injected into main flow by blowing on the suction surface, and the low energy boundary flow mass is removed by distributed suction, thus the flow separation can be successfully suppressed. Aerodynamic lift to drag ratio is improved significantly using the flow control technique, and the energy consumption is quite low.

  • In the paper, a study on the analysis of the effects of trailing edge thickness on the aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil is described. In this research, modification of the formula representing NACA symmetric airfoil is studied to change the airfoil shape with different trailing edge thickness of user's choice. According to the result of aerodynamic characteristics, as the trailing edge thickness increases the maximum lift coefficient increases while the lift-to-drag ratio decreases. In this paper flow calculation results are demonstrated and the analysis on those results and findings on the effects of non-zero thickness of trailing edge are suggested.

  • A boundary layer visualization was carried out in order to investigate the influence of Reynolds number on an oscillating airfoil. An NACA 0012 airfoil is sinusoidally pitched at the quarter chord point with oscillation amplitude of ${\pm}6^{\circ}$. A smoke-wire technique was employed to visualize the boundary layer and the near-wake. The freestream velocities are 1.98, 2.83 and 4.03m/s and corresponding chord Reynolds numbers are $2.3{\times}10^4,\;3.3{\times}10^4$, and $4.8{\times}10^4$, respectively. As the reduced frequency of K=0.1 is fixed, the corresponding frequency of an airfoil was adjusted in each case. The results reveal that the point at which the shear stress in an unsteady boundary layer separation disappears does not correspond with the position of the breakdown of the boundary layer, and that the breakdown of the boundary layer occurs further downstream.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the subsonic airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid-incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid-compressible flow analysis. The Goradia's integral method and the Truckenbrodt integral method are adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar flow and the turbulent flow respectively. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. And the analysis of the seperated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered and its geometry expressed by the formula of Summey & Smith when no seperation occurs. • Aerodynamic characteristics for two-dimensional cyclic motion profile of flapping airfoil in low Reynolds number flows are investigated. Plunging motion and lead-lag motion in the two dimensional space with different plunging and lead-lag amplitudes are combined to cyclic motion profile and the flow around the airfoil is simulated. Present result shows that the improved aerodynamic efficiencies for a given flapping airfoil by adding periodic lead-lag motion of airfoil rather than the pure plunging case. The thrust coefficient and lift coefficient are compared with each cycle during the flapping period and aerodynamic characteristics are obtained on upstroke motion and downstroke motion.

  • A new and efficient method is presented for design optimization, which is based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The method is applied to design an airfoil configuration. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved for the viscous analysis of the flow, which provides the object function. The CFD analysis is then coupled with the optimization procedure that used a conjugate gradient method. During the one-dimensional search of the optimization procedure, an approximate flow analysis based on a first-order Taylor series expansion is used to reduce the computational cost, (This study is supported by Korean Ministry of Education through Research Fund)
