  • It is very important to evaluate proper acquisition of military aircraft against future threats in our military defense field. In previous studies, the evaluation has been determined in terms of tasking order or weapon power index. These methods compare the combat-effectiveness index and the number of aircraft. However, this study provides simulation analysis of proper quantity decision based on actual operational senarios of military aircraft using System Dynamics. The method reflects the properties of military aircraft operation concepts and considers the rate of failure of main systems on subsystems, as well as repair and crash rates caused by differentials in peacetime and wartime frame.

  • IPQC system was introduced for the flight safety at the age of scientific safety management in the 1980s. In spite of performing this system, aircraft accidents caused by human factors, which were above 70% among all flight accident factors, have not been reduced. Accordingly, throughout this paper I analyzed the aircraft accident factors by means of a literature study and a pilot survey. Then, based on the notion of TQC(Total Quality Control), I hierarchically classified Individual Quality into Capacity Management, Safety Management, and General Management and did the low-ranked management factors as well. AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process), one of the scientific management methods, was used for estimating the relative importance of Individual Quality Control factors and the heavy aircraft accident causes over the last 20 years were analyzed according to the flight ranks. Based on the comparative analysis of results derived above, an IPQC model as flight ranks is established. In short, according to this newly suggested model we can obtain the maximum flight safety with the preventive actions against aircraft accidents caused by human factors and by improving the operation effect under the reasonable pilot management.

  • A military aircraft generally includes external stores such as fuel tanks or external arming, depending on the purpose of the operation. When a store is dropped from a military aircraft at high subsonic, transonic, or supersonic speeds, the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the store can be sufficient to send the store back into contact with the aircraft. This can cause damage to the aircraft and endanger the life of the crew. In this study, time accurate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with dynamic moving grid (moving and deformable mesh, MDM) technique has been used to accurately calculate store trajectories. For the verification of the present numerical approach, a wind tunnel test model for the wing-pylon-finned store configuration has been considered and analyzed. The comparison results for the ejected store trajectories between the present numerical analysis and the wind tunnel test data at the Mach number of 0.95 and 1.2 are presented. It is also importantly shown that the numerical parameter of MDM technique gives significant effect for the calculated store trajectory in the low-supersonic flow such as Mach 1.2.

  • An aircraft, its engine and propeller are certified in processes of design, production, and operation respectively. Type Certificate is issued if the aviation authority finds that the design of aircraft, engine, or propeller complies with applicable airworthiness standards and environmental standards. The ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) prescribes the international standards and recommended practices of type certification for the contracting states. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) established their regulations and procedures applicable to type certification. In this paper, we compared the differences among the ICAO, the FAA, and the EASA regulations, and on this comparison, we proposed the rulemaking items to improve type certification regulations in Korea.

  • Recent trends in modern warfare are increasing in importance for air warfare, information warfare, and warfare. The technology of the weapon system software is rapidly developing, and the silent information war to hack it is still going on. Currently, the FA-50 aircraft has a function that can be initialized by a simple switch operation to protect the main military information in the event of an emergency. However, there are limitations in the existing Zeroize function, and this study was carried out to supplement this. First, we compare and analyze the memory structure of aircraft operating in our military, and examined the currently implemented Zeroize function. Second, we reviewed various methods to overcome the limitation of existing Zeroize function. Third, we implement the existing Zeroize function without additional manipulation. In this paper, we propose that the implementation of this feature will enable us to protect our military data more securely and suggest that we should continue to look for ways to enhance security for our technology in the future.

  • Voice Recognition has recently been improved with AI(Artificial Intelligence) and has greatly improved the false recognition rate and provides an effective and efficient Human Machine Interface (HMI). This trend has also been applied in the defense industry, particularly in the aviation, F-35. However, for the quality evaluation of Voice Recognition, the defense industry, especially the aircraft, requires measurable quantitative models. In this paper, the quantitative evaluation model is proposed for applying Voice Recognition to aircraft. For the proposal, the evaluation items are identified from the Voice Recognition technology and ISO/IEC 25000(SQuaRE) quality attributes. Using these two perspectives, the quantitative evaluation model is proposed under aircraft operation condition and confirms the evaluation results.

  • Aged aircraft have several cracks as a results of long-term service, and these cracks affect the safety and decrease the rate of operation of the aircraft. To solve these problems, crack propagation analysis should be performed to determine the service life at fatigue critical location(FCL). It is, however, almost impossible to obtain the stress spectrum, which is crucial for crack propagation analysis of the FCLs of wing structure of aged aircraft. In this study, to analyze the fatigue crack propagation behavior at the FCL of an aged aircraft, first finite element analysis is performed for a 3D geometry model of the aircraft wing structure, which is obtained using CATIA based on the paper drawings. Then, the transfer function and stress-spectrum of the FCL are derived using the load factor data and the FEA results. Finally, the crack propagation rates of the FCL are evaluated using the commercial software, NASGRO 6.0.

  • The Safe Operating Envelope (SOE) combined with Short-Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) performance is an essential consideration of a light aircraft carrier for design of hull shape with excellent seakeeping performance in terms of naval air operations as well as traditional naval ship missions such as Transit and Patrol (TAP), and Replenishment at Sea (RAS) and so on. A variety of procedures are systematically combined to determine SOE considering rather complicated missions associated with operation of aircraft onboard. The evaluation of take-off and landing safety missions onboard should consider wind effect on deck and severer seakeeping indices and standards compared with conventional naval ships. In order to support take-off and landing missions, various support activities of the crews are required. So, additional evaluation is needed for indicators such as MSI(Motion sickness Index) and MII(Motion Induced Interruptions), which are quantitative indicators of work ability that appear as a result of motion response. In this study, a standard procedure is developed including the seaworthiness performance indicators, standards, and evaluation procedures that should be considered during design of STOVL aircraft carrier. Analysis results are discussed in terns of air-wake on deck as well as seakeeping indices associated with design parameter changes in view of conceptual design of a light aircraft carrier.

  • By aircraft from Aviation regulations and institutional regulatory framework for ensuring the safety is secured. State-of-the-art aircraft, according to the type of development and diversification, modernization and new types of aircraft are operated. In particular, light aircraft and ultralight flying device such as the gyro-plane and unmanned flying devices is introduced a new device, and the device operates at these flight in accordance with the standards of the Aviation Act regulations may not occur often. Variety of light aircraft and ultra-light aircraft assembly, can be adapted for a person engaged in the business of aviation safety management and to perform the legal basis was established. Depending on the classification of newly introduced aircraft, the biggest change is the introduction of the concept of the LSA. In Korea, the various light aircraft are operating, but these aircraft range not clearly Aviation Regulations had difficulty in ensuring safety. This study examined the differences between international rules and regulations of Korea about the classification of aircraft. The LSA are included in aircraft categories internationally, but LSA will not be included in the aircraft categories, which is one of a range of powered flight device exists in Korea Aviation Act. Limit for maximum continuous power speed in a LSA, it is a limit on the right of the people who want using the high-performance plane. Also it is an international trend does not fit in, and is consistent with the intent of LSA manufacturer. Delete the content from a range of future aviation law revisions and light aircraft-related provisions to limit the maximum continuous power speed is considered to be suitable for the purpose of introducing the light aircraft industry. The laws and regulations set up in order to ensure the safety of ultralight aircraft categories existing in ultralight aircraft that exceeds the purpose of the introduction of LSA technology development at home and abroad, and is intended to reflect. These standards complement of aircraft operation is not appropriate for the situation unless the country is difficult to ensure the safety of operations. Also developed in other countries, the introduction of aircraft operating in the country, so many problems occur early revision is required.

  • In this paper, we examined the problems of the flare operation of tactic maneuvering flight of fighter aircraft with 150GL center external fuel tank and proposed the possible solution of it's operation. The damage scope of horizontal fin of fuel tank and flare trajectory when the flare ejected from the maneuvering aircraft were analyzed by the wind tunnel test and the numerical analysis. We investigated the two different option to avoid the damage of fin; i) the adjustment of flare dispenser angle and ii) the change of horizontal fin's shape. For the considering of practical operation of present system, we chose the second option. We estimated the drop safety of external fuel tank with redesigned fin by the wind tunnel experiments.
