  • Feathering spindle is one of the critical parts of the rotor system in the Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(SUAV) that it was manufactured with special material, Maraging C300. During the initial ground and tie-down flight tests of the SUAV, surface of the feathering spindle contacting to the needle-roller bearings showed excessive wear and dent due to high vibrating loads transferred from the rotating blades. Gas nitriding process was applied to the bearing contact surface of the feathering spindle to increase surface hardness so as to improve the surface defects. This paper briefly presents the gas nitriding process adopted and the spindle quality improvements including wear and corrosion resistance.

  • An aircraft made an emergency landing through the loss of capability controlling steering. A torsion link which is a part of steering apparatus has been adrift from the steering system and the bolt connected to the steering link has fractured. At the same time, the FLIR(Forward Looking Infrared Radar) mounted in front of the steering link has been also damaged. In the early of this investigation, we considered the failure of the FLIR had occurred first, that FLIR hit the steering link and finally the bolt fractured. The fractured section of the bolt has shown a beach mark and a dimple mark as well. The outside of the bolt has shown a large deformation by a heavy load. As a result, we have found out what the cause of the heavy load and the fractures for bolt, link and FLIR have occurred in what order.

  • In this paper, the technical problems or considerations which could be arisen at the certification for composite small aircraft structures per FAR Part 23 have been reviewed and the actions expected applicants should take also have been explored. This paper focuses on the technical problems considered to be happening and describes the relation to the certification regulations and to the certification experiences. This paper is general information to composite certification activities, and presents some useful guidance materials and reference materials. The general information described in this paper could not be applied to any composite structures and to the secondary structures which not critical to flight safety.

  • In general, 3-dimensional point-mass equation has been widely used for the trajectory optimization of the fixed-wing aircraft and reentry vehicle. But it should be modified and represent target vehicle's own characteristics. For a lighter-than-air vehicle such as an airship, there exists different and peculiar flight characteristics compared with the aircraft. The first part of this paper is to derive the dynamic equation of motion for the mid-altitude unmanned airship and the second part is to obtain the optimal trajectories under the minimal time flight given constraints. The trajectory optimization problem is converted into the nonlinear programming problem using Sequential Quadratic Programming approach. Finally numerical solutions are presented in the last part of the paper.

  • In this study, we developed the real-time controller for control loading system (CLS) of aircraft simulator. The CLS is given the forces as inputs: the exerted force by a pilot, which is determined according to the position of the control stick, and the calculated force by the host computer. And then CLS makes the pilot feel the back loading force by supplying the motor drive with the actuator signal. The developed real-time controller for CLS is organized into the five parts which are the position sensing part including a encoder, the A/D converter part for the analog load cell signal, the communication interface part to communicate with the host, the D/A converter for the actuator signal, and the CPU DSP2812 to carry out a control algorithm. We constructed the test control loading system and carried out the experiment with the developed real-time controller. The experimental results showed that the real-time controller generates the back loading forces similar to the desired back loading force graph.

  • In order to advance into the MRO industry, the Aviation maintenance organization with suitable for the standards for personnel, facilities and operations should be first approved by FAA and EASA. The purpose of study is designed to arrange the standards required for personnel, facility, operation rule for approval of Repair Station maintenance organizations certified by FAA PART 145 of the US Federal Aviation Regulation. Also to consider the following differences through the comparative analysis with domestic AMO certification of the information in the Management, Maintenance Process, and Quality System for approval of maintenance organization authorized, the additional EASA PART 145. As a comparative analysis on maintenance organization certification in the country between FAA and EASA, this study could show us that domestic maintenance organization, certified manual contents are used by applying just many of the FAA system. And we could know that as part of the EASA maintenance organization certification process, airmen personnel were relatively systematically segmented and controlled. For domestic maintenance organization certification, operational as policy implications we would like to present policy implications such as the implication of rating system of Aviation Mechanic License like EASA, the financial support of the training center to resolve the shortage of the FAA or EASA license holders, operational organization as "CAMO" for systematic aviation mechanic certified system should be required, continued construction of hangar or MRO for airworthiness repair under Governmental support, and varied application of DER system from FAA accordingly.

  • The microstructure and tensile properties of Mg-Zn-Ca and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloys have been investigated. The alloys were obtained by melting in a low carbon crucible coated with boron nitride under an Ar gas atmosphere to prevent oxidation and combustion. The Mg alloy melt was cast into the metallic mold at room temperature, and cooling part was located at the bottom of mold. The phase formed during solidification of the Mg-Zn-(Mn) alloys containing 0.5%Ca is $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloys increased with increasing Zn content, but the ductility did not change with increasing Zn content. The addition of Mn improves the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloys, but the ductility did not change. Tensile fracture of the alloys revealed brittle failure, with cracking along the $Ca_2Mg_6Zn_3$ phase. The variation of stress with strain obeyed the relationship of the ${\sigma}=K{\varepsilon}^n$.

  • This paper deals with $\ulcorner$Requirement Decision Model for Repair Parts supplied by the Government$\lrcorner$ which is to reduce Aircraft Contract Maintenance Cost. It aims to find solutions to the fundamental problems of the Aircraft Contract Maintenance System. Under the current Aircraft Contract Maintenance System, it is hard to forecast the exact demand of repair parts, so support rate of Repair Parts supplied by the Government is restricted under 50 percent. It is inevitable to purchase Repair Parts from the firm with much higher price than those of Government source. However, absence of fixed demand pattern makes it difficult to improve accuracy of demand forecast. As a solution to these problems, this model prevents a cost increase due to the unit price difference between Repair Parts supplied by the Government and Repair Parts purchased by the Firm. It also reflects demand characteristics of each repair part, and prevents continual stock increase by setting an upper limit on the amount of Repair Parts supplied by the Government. The effectiveness of this model is verified by empirical analysis using the latest raw data. By applying this model to real situation, we expect to reduce about 4 billion won every year.

  • In order to effectively process target recognition using radar, accurate signal information for the target is required. However, such a target signal is usually mixed with noise, and this part of the study is continuously carried out. Especially, image processing, target signal processing and target recognition for the target are examples. Since the field of target recognition is important from a military point of view, this paper carried out research on target recognition of aircraft using a tree-structured fuzzy neural networks. Fuzzy neural networks are learned by using reflected signal data for an aircraft to optimize the model, and then test data for the target are used for the optimized model to perform an experiment on target recognition. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the simulation results.

  • The PTO (Power Take-Off) shaft for aircraft, with welded construction using multiple thin membranes, was developed in the 1950s to improve the elasticity of the part. As it is lightweight, stable at high speeds, and has good flexibility, it is used in most of the fighter aircraft. It connects the AMAD (aircraft mounted accessory drive) gearbox with the EMAD (engine mounted accessory drive) gearbox and transmits the rotational power between them. It operates in the high speed range of 10,000-18,000 rpm. In this study, the safety of the PTO shaft made of Ti alloy was investigated using finite element analysis, and the ability to transmit power was demonstrated through a high-cycle fatigue test conducted in a laboratory. Further, the life of the ball joints of the aircraft under high-cycle fatigue test conditions was predicted, and the wear characteristics were analyzed.
