This paper describes the test procedure, instrumentation, verification methodology and the results of the ground vibration test(GVT) and force vibration test(FVT) of the SmartUAV aircraft to estimate experimentally dynamic characteristics of the aircraft. Bungee cords are used to emulate free-free boundary conditions of the test aircraft. The SmartUAV is excited by three shakers and one-hundred frequency response functions(FRF's) is measured. The FRF's are reduced and analyzed to identify the dynamics parameters of the SmartUAV. To extract modal parameters of the SmartUAV such as, natural frequencies and damping ratios, the poly-reference least square complex exponential method is used in the time domain. The mode shape coefficients are estimated with the least squares frequency domain method to identify the vibration modes. The FVT was performed by fixed sine frequency with three shakers on the x, y and z direction and vibration characteristics of structures and detail equipments are measured.

Numerical simulations of 3D aircraft configurations are performed in order to understand the effects of turbulence models on the prediction of aircraft's aerodynamic characteristics. An in-house CFD code that solves 3D RANS equations and two-equation turbulence model equations are used. The code applies Roe's approximated Riemann solver and an AF-ADI scheme. Van Leer's MUSCL extrapolation with van Albada's limiter is also adopted. Various versions of Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models as well as Coakley's $q-{\omega}$ model are incorporated into the CFD code. Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST models include the standard model, the 2003 model, the model incorporating the vorticity source term, and the model containing controlled decay. Turbulent flows over a wing are simulated in order to validate the turbulence models contained in the CFD code. The results from these simulations are then compared with computational results from the $3^{rd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Numerical simulations of the DLR-F6 wing-body and wing-body-nacelle-pylon configurations are conducted and compared with computational results of the $2^{nd}$ AIAA CFD Drag Prediction Workshop. Aerodynamic characteristics as well as flow features are scrutinized with respect to the turbulence models. The results obtained from each simulation incorporating Menter's $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model variations are compared with one another.

Representative crashworthiness requirement documents for military helicopter are MIL-STD-1290 and the Aircraft Crash Survival Design Guide(ACSDG) which were lastly revised in the 1980's. Taking analysis results of diverse U.S. Army helicopter mishaps into account, we can say that adequate guidelines do not exist to ensure crashworthiness of new generation aircraft. In this paper, U.S. Army helicopter mishap analysis conducted by U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command(RDECOM) is readjusted to review the basis of new crashworthiness design criteria for military helicopter, in other words, Full Spectrum Crashworthiness Criteria(FSCC). This analysis effort is a part of FSC development. This effort was to research and quantify the dynamics of military aircraft crashes to be used as the quantitative basis for new design criteria.

The aircrafts with high aspect ratio wings made by a composite material have been developed, which enable high energy efficiency and long-term flight by reducing air resistance and structural weight. However, they have difficulties in securing the aeroelastic stability such as the flutter because of their long and flexible wings. The flutter is unstable self-excited-vibration caused by interaction between the structural dynamics and the aerodynamics. It should be verified analytically prior to first flight test that the flutter does not happen in the range of flight mission. Normally, the finite element model is used for the flutter analysis. So it is important to construct the finite element model representing dynamic characteristics similar to those of a real aircraft. Accordingly, in this research, to acquire dynamic characteristics experimentally the modal test of the aircraft with high aspect ratio composite wings was conducted. And then the modal parameters from the finite element analysis(FEA) were compared with those from the modal test. To make analysis results closer to test results, the finite element model was updated by means of the sensitivity analysis on variables and the optimization. Finally, it was proved that the updated finite element model is reliable as compared with the results of the modal test.

The ability to calculate aerodynamic heating and surface temperature is essential to ensure proper design of aircraft components in high speed flight. In this study, various empirical formulas for efficiently calculating aerodynamic heating of aircraft were first analyzed. A simple computational code based on empirical formulas was developed and then compared with commercial codes; ANSYS FLUENT based on the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equation, and ThermoAnalytics MUSES based on an empirical formula. The code was found to agree well with the results of FLUENT in the wall and stagnation point temperatures. It also showed excellent agreement with MUSES, within 1% and 5% in temperature and heat flux, respectively.

The paper presented here covers the work associated with the flight control law design, ground based and in flight simulation and handling qualities assessment of the Fly-by-Wire type Aircraft (FBWA). The FBWA configurations are of the same generic form of the Korean advanced trainer. The normal acceleration (Nz) and pitch rate (q) feedback control system is employed for longitudinal axis and roll rate (p) and lateral acceleration (Ny) feedback flight control law is developed in lateral/ directional axis. The flight tests for the FBW A dynamics evaluation were executed for the target aircraft (FBWA) on the IFS (In-Flight-Simulator) aircraft . The test results showed that Level 1 handling qualities for the most unstable flight regime and Level 1/2 for the landing approach flight regime were achieved. And the designed FBWA flight control law has revealed acceptable CHR (Cooper-Harper handling qualities Ratings).

In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.

Accurate prediction of the trajectory and time of a time-varying mass parachute system remains essential in the mission requiring a precision airdrop to the ground. In this study, we investigate the altitude-varying behavior of a cross-type parachute system designed to deliver a time-varying mass object like flare. The dynamics of the descending parachute system was analyzed based on the Runge-Kutta method of the ordinary differential system. The drag coefficients of the cross-type parachute and flare were calculated by a CFD code based on the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. Finally, by using a simplified gust wind model in troposphere, the combined effects of gust wind and time-varying mass were examined in detail.
The modern version of aircrafts is allowed to guarantee the superior handing qualities within the entire flight envelope by imposing the adequate stability and flying qualities on a target aircraft through the various techniques of flight control law design. Generally, the flight control law of the aircraft in service applies the various techniques of the verified control algorithm, such as dynamic inversion and eigenstructure assignment. The supersonic trainer employs the RSS(Relaxed Static Stability) concept in order to improve the aerodynamic performance in longitudinal axis and the longitudinal control laws employ the dynamic inversion with proportional-plus-integral control method. And, lateral-directional control laws employ the blended roll system of both beta-betadot feedback and simple roll rate feedback with proportional control method in order to guarantee aircraft stability. In this paper, the lateral-directional flight control law is designed by applying dynamic inversion control technique as a different method from the current supersonic trainer control technique, where the roll rate command system is designed at the lateral axis for the rapid response characteristics, and the sideslip command system is adopted at the directional axis for stability augmentation. The dynamic inversion of a simple 1st order model is applied. And this designed flight control law is confirmed to satisfy the requirement presented from the military specification. This study is expected to contribute to design the flight control law of KF-X(Korean Fighter eXperimental) which will proceed into the full-scale development in the near future.

The aerodynamic design and analysis on advanced propeller with blade sweep was performed for recent turboprop aircraft. HS1 airfoil series are selected as a advanced propeller blade airfoil. Adkins method is used for aerodynamic design and performance analysis with respect to the design point. Adkins method is based on the vortex-blade element theory which design the propeller to satisfy the condition for minimum energy loss. Propeller geometry is generated by varying chord length and pitch angle at design point of target aircraft. Advanced propeller is designed by apply the modified chord length, the tip sweep which is based on the geometry of conventional propeller. The aerodynamic characteristics of the designed Advanced propeller were verified by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamic) and evaluated to be properly designed.
