Distribution of Airborne Fungi in the Public Facilities (다중이용시설 내 공기 중의 진균 분포)

  • Recently, there is increasing interest in indoor air pollution. Fungal spores are one of the pollutants that is the causes of hypersensitivity reactions, bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis. This study was performed to assess the levels of fungi concentration in public facilities and airborne fungi were collected with the air sampler using DRBC(Dichloran rose bengal chloramphenicol) agar. It was found that airborne fungi concentration were related to the humidity and the people movement. 10 genera of fungi was isolated and identified and the most common culturable fungi were Penicillium, Cladosporium, and Aspergillus.

Exposure Evaluation to Total Welding Fume and Manganese at Technical High Schools in Choong-Nam Area (충청지역 일부 공업고등학교 실습생의 용접흄 및 망간에 대한 노출 평가)

  • Geometric mean of airborne welding fume concentration at technical high schools was 4.80mg/㎥)N.D~35.39 mg/ ㎥ and the percentage of samples exceeded TLV of the Korean ministry of labor was 43.6%, Geometric mean of airborne Mn concentration was 0.06 mg/㎥(N.D~0.42mg/㎥) and the percentage of samples exceeded TLV of ACGIH was 15.4 % In case of airborne Me concentration, there is a significant difference among schools (p<0.05) Mn concentrations in blood of the exposed and control groups were 1.84$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl and 1.91 mg/dl respectively. Mn concentrations in urine of the exposed and control groups were 1.36$\mu\textrm{g}$/ιand 0.57$\mu\textrm{g}$/ι respectively. In case of Mn concentrations in urine there is a significant difference between both groups(P<0.001) and among schools(p<0.05) Mn concentrations in blood and urine of exposed group were not over BEIs of the Korean ministry of labor. Mn levels in blood and urine were not significantly affected by smoking, drinking and residence, There was no correlation between Mn concentration in air and blood but there was a statistically significant correlation between Mn concentration in air urine(r=0.323). There was no a statistically significant correlation between Mn concentration in blood and urine.

A Study on the Particles Density Estimation in Seoul Metropolitan (서울시 미세먼지의 밀도 추정에 관한 연구)

  • The variation of the particle size distribution and density as well as the chemical composition of aerosols is important to evaluate the particles. This study measured and analyzed airborne particles using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) system and an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS) at the University of Seoul during every season. The highest particle number concentration of airborne particles less than $0.9\;{\mu}m$, occurred in winter, while the highest particle number concentration of airborne particles more than $0.9\;{\mu}m$, occurred in spring. Mass concentration appeared highest at spring. Also, when we compared $\beta$-ray's mass concentration with calculated mass concentration by using the SMPS-APS system during each season, density of the winter is $1.92\;g/cm^3$, spring density is $1.64\;g/cm^3$, fall density is $1.57\;g/cm^3$. We found out that PM10 density was differ every season. However, while the calculated density is whole density for PM10 the density of each diameter was different. In this study the density estimation equation of the QCM cascade impactor measured mass concentration of each diameter.

Remediation effect of indoor airborne fungi by operating the ionizing air cleaner in the university office.

  • Our study from Feburary to March, 2003, were done in university office A and B, located in Seoul. This study was carried out to investigate the reduction of the airborne fungi before and after we activate the air cleaner which using ionization. And the method of assessment was done by the CAMNEA method. The result was as follows. 1. In the research office A, the concentration of the airborne fungi was 18(${\pm}$11.3) CFU/㎥ before the ionizing air cleaner system was turned on: whereas three days after this result the concentration decreased to less than 1 CFU/㎥. 2. In the laboratory office B, the concentration was 210.6(${\pm}$5.3) CFU/㎥ before using the air cleaner and was decreased to 32.2(t 10.3) CFU/㎥ after using the air cleaner.   • For concrete structures immersed in seawater, the concentration of chloride used to estimate the chloride diffusion coefficient can be defined as the seawater chloride concentration. However, for seashore concrete structures which are not coming into direct contact with seawater, establishing the interface concentration of chloride becomes delicate. In addition, concrete structures are greatly affected by salt attack primarily due to airborne sea salt like it can be seen through the corrosion of rebar. This study intends to investigate characteristics on the salinity of airborne sea salt by height. Salinity measurement devices were installed at height of 2, 10 and 19m on the seashore water tower located in the area of Samchuk in the Eastern coast. Analysis results of the decrease of salinity with respect to the height above the ground at a distance of 30m from the seashore showed that the reduction reached about 40$\%$ at a height of 10m and 60$\%$ at 20m.

Fungal Distribution of the Janggyeong Panjeon, the Depositories for the Tripitaka Koreana Woodblocks in the Haeinsa Temple

  • Many investigations have been conducted on the biological damage and environmental conditions necessary to preserve the Janggyeong Panjeon and Daejanggyeongpan (woodblocks). We performed a survey on the concentration and diversity of airborne fungi in the Janggyeong Panjeon and compared them with the results of a survey from 2012. The temperature of the Beopbojeon building was slightly lower, while the relative humidity was higher than those found at the Sudarajang building. The concentration of airborne fungi in the Beopbojeon was 1.44-fold that of the Sudarajang. It was confirmed that the concentration and diversity of airborne fungi in the Janggyeong Panjeon differed depending on the sampling site. In total, 23 fungal genera were identified from the air samples, and 11 fungal and 1 bacterial genera were identified from the surface of the woodblocks. Among these, only five types of fungi were commonly distributed in the indoor air and surface of the Daejanggyeongpan; however, 58.3% of the fungi identified on the surface of the woodblocks were not observed in the in the air samples. The surface-dwelling fungi may accumulate dust to form microbial communities over time.

Changes in Concentration Levels of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds Associated with Airborne Particulate Matter in Downtown Tokyo after Introducing Government Diesel Vehicle Controls

  • The effectiveness of the government regulation on tail-pipe emission for diesel vehicles issued in 2003 in Tokyo was evaluated in this study. Variations in annual average concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-PAHs associated with airborne particulate matter were investigated in connection with the variation in airborne elemental carbon (EC) concentration in downtown Tokyo, Japan in 2006-2007 and in 1997-1998. The annual average concentrations of EC, seven different PAHs, and 1-nitropyrene were found to have decreased significantly from 1997-1998 to 2006-2007. The most prominent decrease in atmospheric concentration was observed for 1-nitropyrene, which is a representative nitro-PAH originating from diesel vehicles. This indicated that the government control has worked to considerably reduce both atmospheric mutagens and airborne particulate matter. In contrast, the concentrations of two nitro-PAHs, 2-nitrofluoranthene and 2-nitropyrene, remained the same. These nitro-PAHs are known to be formed by atmospheric nitration of their parent PAHs, and this result suggested factors other than the concentration of parent PAHs and $NO_2$ affects the degree of atmospheric formation of nitro-PAHs.

Distribution of Airborne Microorganisms in Yellow Sands of Korea

  • Distribution of airborne microorganisms was determined with two different types of air samplers, the Anderson cascade sampler and the Aerobioscope sampler, in the vicinity of Taejon. The size distribution of particles carrying bacteria and fungi was concurrently measured. The concentration of detected viable airborne particles was greatly varied. It was observed that the number of microbial particles increased in April and October. The most isze o particles carrying bacteria was larger than 4.7 .mu.m in mean aerodiameter, which made up 69.8% of the total particle fraction. About 63.2% of fungi-carrying particles were smaller than 4.7 .mu.m in aerodiameter. The distribution of particles on Yellow Sand Phenomena days was also analyzed. The number of fine particles having mass median aero-diameter from 1.0 to 10.mu.m increased on Yellow Sand Phenomena days to about 6 times that on normal days and the n umber of colony forming unit (CFU/$\textrm{m}^3$) of airborne bacteria also increased by 4.3 times in April. The reuslts from the Anderson sampler showed that the concentration of bacteria increased greatly on the fraction of fine particles ranging from 0.6 $\mu$m to 4.7 $\mu$m in diameter. Unlike the increase in bacterial floraon Yellow Sand Phenomena days, the fungal concentration slightly decreased and showed a normal size distribution parttern. This study suggests that a long-range transmission of bacteria results form bacteria adsorbing onto the fine particles during the Yellow Sand Phenomena.

A Study on TSP and Pb Concentration in Atmosphere in Seoul (서울 일부지역의 도로변 대기중 분진 및 납 농도에 대한 조사연구)

  • This study was performed to determine the concentrations of airborne TSP, Pb and street dust Pb in Kuro, Chongro, Namsan Tollgate and kwachun from August 15 to September 15, 1990.The results of this study are as follows. 1. Average airborne TSP concentrations in chongro and Kuro were 460$\mu$g/m$^{3}$ and 440$\mu$g/m$^}3}$, respectively, and exceeded the Korean air quality standards of 300$\mu$g/m$^{3}$. Average airborne TSP concentrations in Namsan Tollgate and Kwachun were 270$\mu$g/m$^{3}$ and 80$\mu$g/m$^{3}$, respectively, and didn't exceeded the Korean air quality standards of 300$\mu$g/m$^{3}$. The airborne TSP concentrations between Seoul area(Kuro, Chongro and Namsan Tollgate) and Kwachun area were significantly different (p < 0.01). 2. Average airborne Pb concentrations in Chongro, Kuro, Namsan Tollgate and Kwachun were 1.07, 0.55, 0.84 and 0.16$\mu$g/m$^{3}$, respectively. All the airborne Pb concentration at four area were below the Korean air quality standards of 1.5$\mu$g/m$^{3}$. The airborne Pb concentrations between Seoul area (Kuro, Chongro and Narnsan Tollgate) and Kwachun area were significantly different (p < 0.01). 3. Pb contents in street dusts in Kuro, Chongro, Namsan Tollgate and Kwachun were 9.30, 15.25, 18.17 and 3.16$\mu$g/g, respectively. The Pb contents in street dusts between Seoul area(Kuro, Chongro and Namsan Tollgate) and Kwachun area were significantly different (p < 0.01). 4. The airborne TSP and Pb concentrations were highly correlated(r=0.68), but the Pb concentrations in street dusts and atmosphere were poorly correlated(r=0.22).

Evaluation of Impactor's Collection Efficiency on Airborne Bacteria by Type of Agar Media and Storage Condition (배지 종류 및 저장 조건에 따른 impactor의 부유세균 시료 채취 효율 평가)

  • The range of reduction rates of airborne bacteria concentration at 6 hrs, 12 hrs, 24 hrs and 48 hrs, which means a storage time until input of agar media into incubator after air sampling with an impactor. were 15-20%, 25-40%, 35-50% and 55-70%, respectively, compared to initial concentration. Types of agar media and storage thermal condition did not significantly affect a collection efficiency of impactor in terms of evaluating airborne bacteria level (p>0.05). To better improve the impactor's collection efficiency of airborne bacteria, based on the result of this study, it is recommended that the vicinity of $25^{\circ}C$ should be sustained until input of agar media into incubator after air sampling.
