  • In this paper, we investigate three dimensional optimal evasive maneuver patterns for air-to-surface attack missiles against proportionally navigated anti-air defense missiles. Interception error of the defense missile can be generated by evasive maneuver of the attack missile during the time of flight for which the defense missile intercepts the attack missile. Time varying weighted sum of the inverse of these interception errors forms a performance index to be minimized. Direct parameter optimization technique using CFSQP is adopted to get the attack missile's optimal evasive maneuver patterns according to parameter changes of both the attack missile and the defense missile such as maneuver limit and time constant of autopilot approximated by the 1st order lag system. The overall shape of resultant optimal evasive maneuver to enhance the survivability of air-to-surface missiles against proportionally navigated anti-air missiles is a kind of deformed barrel roll.

  • An Emergency Destruction System is inevitable for ensuring safety both at sea and in populated areas, particularly during emergency detonations triggered by abnormal missile flight or upon mission completion. This paper introduces a novel method for developing an Emergency Destruction System capable of precisely calculating the Instantaneous Impact Point(IIP) during high-speed, maneuverable long-range surface-to-air missile flight tests. The Emergency Destruction System designed for long-range surface-to-air missile flight tests generates impact position tables that meticulously incorporate wind errors and navigation equations based on the Earth's ellipsoidal model. Factors such as the Coriolis effect and the direction of the gravitational acceleration vector are accounted for, significantly enhancing the accuracy of IIP determination amidst highly variable missile speed and attitude.

  • The warship is run based on the combat system which shares tactical information collected by target detection systems and navigation devices across a network, and conducts the command and control of weapons from target detection to kill assessment. The short-range air defense missile system defends a warship from anti-ship missiles, aircraft, helicopter and other threats in order to contribute to the survival of a warship and the success of missions. The short-range air defense missile system is applied to a various combat systems. In this paper, we have proposed the interface design between the short-range air defense missile and dissimilar combat systems. To employ the short-range air defense missile at dissimilar combat systems, each system is driven by independent processor, and the tasks which are performed by each system are assigned. The information created by them is exchanged through the interface, and the flow of messages is designed.

  • This paper deals with supersonic air-breathing missile system. A supersonic air-breathing missile system has very complicated and incoherent thrust characteristics with respect to outer and inner environment during operation. For this reason, the missile system has many maneuver constraints and is allowed to operate within narrow flight envelope. In this paper, trajectory optimization of the missile is accomplished. The trajectory optimization problem is formulated as a discrete parameter optimization problem. For this formulation, Legendre Pseudo-Spectral method is introduced. This method is based on calculating the state and control variables on Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto (LGL) points. This approach helps to find approximated derivative and integration quantities simply. It is shown that, for this trajectory optimization, trend analysis is performed from thrust characteristics on various conditions so that the trajectory optimization is accomplished with fine initial guess with these results.

  • The low-altitude PAC-2 Patriot missile system is the backbone of ROK air defense for intercepting enemy aircraft. Currently there is no missile interceptor which can defend against the relatively high velocity ballistic missile from North Korea which may carry nuclear, biological or chemical warheads. For ballistic missile defense, Korea's air defense systems are being evaluated. In attempting to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitude the most effective means is through a multi-layered missile defense system. The missile defense problem has been studied considering a single interception system or any additional capability. In this study, we seek to establish a mathematical model that's available for multi-layered missile defense and minimize total interception fail probability and proposes a solution based on genetic algorithms. We perform computational tests to evaluate the relative speed and solution of our GA algorithm in comparison with the commercial optimization tool GAMS.

  • A well-designed flight vibration specification enables the optimum weight design of the Surface-to-Air or Air-to-Air Missile, improves the maneuverability of the flight vehicle, improves the engagement of target, and increases the price competitiveness of the components and the missile system. Conventional flight vibration specifications are used by using a somewhat higher standard as suggested in MIL-STD-810C, or based on accumulated data from developed similar missile systems. In this study, we confirmed the validity of FEA response analysis by comparing response data obtained by FEA and response data of real product. Also we proposed that each specification that reflects the structural characteristics of the place where the components are mounted is required instead of verifying all the components by a single flight vibration specification.

  • With the development of modern science and technology, weapon systems such as tanks, submarines, combat planes, radar are also dramatically advanced. Among these weapon systems, the ballistic missile, one of the asymmetric forces, could be considered as a very economical means to attack the core facilities of the other country in order to achieve the strategic goals of the country during the war. Because of the current ballistic missile threat from the North Korea, establishing a missile defense (MD) system becomes one of the major national defense issues. This study focused on the optimization of air defense artillery units' deployment for effective ballistic missile defense. To optimize the deployment of the units, firstly this study examined the possibility of defense, according to the presence of orbital coordinates of ballistic missiles in the limited defense range of air defense artillery units. This constraint on the defense range is originated from the characteristics of anti-ballistic missiles (ABMs) such as PATRIOT. Secondly, this study proposed the optimized mathematical model considering the total covering problem of binary integer programming, as an optimal deployment of air defense artillery units for defending every core defense facility with the least number of such units. Finally, numerical experiments were conducted to show how the suggested approach works. Assuming the current state of the Korean peninsula, the study arbitrarily set ballistic missile bases of the North Korea and core defense facilities of the South Korea. Under these conditions, numerical experiments were executed by utilizing MATLAB R2010a of the MathWorks, Inc.

  • Unsteady numerical analysis was performed to simulate air-launched missiles from a complete helicopter in hover by using an unstructured overset mesh flow solver coupled with a module of six degree-of-freedom motion of equations. The unsteady computations have been performed to obtain flow fields around the complete helicopter including main rotor, tail rotor, and fuselage equipped with multiple missiles, and six-DOF simulation has been performed to predict the behavior of the air-launched missile. The effects of the launching position and the missile thrust on the trajectory of the missile were investigated as well as the aerodynamic interference of the air-launched missile under the unsteady downwash produced by main rotor.

  • In this paper, a performance comparison between CLOS(Command to Line-of-Sight) guidance law and PN(Proportional Navigation) guidance law is made, based on a short range surface-to-air missile simulation program called KNUCLOS. This simulation program has a full nonlinear aerodynamic missile model, a tracker model for missile and target, and target model. According to the simulation results, the PN guidance law has a better performance than CLOS guidance law under various target speed.

  • Standard missile, which is operated by our navy force by loading on DDH-II and DDG, is representative interceptors of U.S. Navy. To defend from rapidly increased air threats after World War II, U.S. Navy had accelerated the development of interceptors, and consequently 3Ts series(Tartar, Talos, Terrier) were developed. Since Standard Missile(SM) series were developed on the back of 3Ts, SM series has been positioned as main surface-to-air interceptors. In this paper, types and technical characteristics of Standard Missile Series from SM-1 to SM-6 are investigated and described.
