  • The present study has carried out thermal performance evaluation of air systems for space heating in Daejeon by the f-chart method. The various effects with the change in air flow rate, number of glazings, storage capacity of pebble bed, and coating materials of absorber plate are analyzed with regard to the effectiveness of air systems for space heating. A comparison is also made with liquid systems under the same operating conditions.

  • A Korean seasoned meat product, seasoned bulgogi was developed in processing and packaging for improved convenience and extended shelf life. The optimal process conditions were found to consist of aging for $20{\sim}30$ hours at $5^{\circ}C$ and air heating for 20 minutes at $210^{\circ}C$ Aging of 24 hours could attain soft texture with little change in pH, color and total aerobic bacterial count. Appropriate drip level could be achieved at air heating of 20 minutes at $210^{\circ}C$, while the air heating at $180^{\circ}C$ could not give suitable level of texture. Modified atmosphere packaging of 60% $CO_2$ and 40% $N_2$ could preserve the product significantly better compared to control of air package and vacuumed package.

  • The Effects of hot water supply temperature on indoor thermal characteristics for floor radiant heating system in residential apartment were researched by computer simulation. The parametric study on hot water supply temperatures with different outdoor air temperatures was done with regard to energy performance and control characteristics, respectively. As a result, the maximum overshoot of indoor air temperature and energy consumption were reduced by adjusting the hot water supply temperatures with outdoor air temperatures.

A Study on the Greenhouse Water Curtain System: Heat Transfer Characteristics

  • Energy balance equations Were developed to describe the heat transfer mechanisms in a double layer plastic greenhouse with a water curtain system. Heat transfer variables were determined by using various temperature data measured in a conventional prototype semicircular cross-section greenhouse over a range of water temperatures and water flow rates. The heat transfer coefficient between flowing water and greenhouse air was independent of water flow rates. But the heat transfer coefficient between water surface and the stagnant air space within the double plastic layer was dependent on water flow rates. Substituting the heat transfer coefficients, determined from the energy balance equations in the heat transfer equations, demonstrated various relationships among ambient air temperature, greenhouse air temperature, water temperature, and water flow rates. The heating benefits were linearly related to not only the inside and outside air temperatures but also to the water temperature. The energy conservation effects of the water curtain system were found even initial water temperatures were considerably lower than the greenhouse setting temperatures. Sensitivity analysis for heat transfer coefficients demonstrated that the heat transfer coefficient between greenhouse air and the stagnant air within the plastic layers was the most significant coefficient in the estimation of heating effects.

  • The objective of this research is to analyze the ventilation effectiveness in the non-isothermal air supply using mixing and displacement ventilation systems for indoor air quality control and management. In this study, a ventilation effectiveness is evaluated in a simplified model chamber using a tracer gas technique of $CO^2$ gas injected into a supply duct as a function of ventilation rates, supply/extract sites and cooling/heating air supply. The ventilation effectiveness decreased with increasing ventilation rate on the cooling and heating conditions. And the ventilation effectiveness of case 3 (down supply and upper extract) was better thant that of case 1(upper supply and upper extract) and case 2(upper supply and down extract) with the cooling supply conditions. but for the heating supply air conditions, the ventilation effectiveness of case 2 was better than that of case 3 and case 1.

  • In Korea, air source heat pump system is less efficient than conventional heat source facilities, such as ground source, river water, because the air temperature in winter season is so low that COP of air source heat pump system drops below 3.0. Therefore, the study on the application of heat pump heating and cooling systems is crucial for the efficient popularization of heat pump. In this work, we present the dynamic analysis of energy consumption for the large resident building by heat resistance-capacitance method. The system simulation of water storage air source heat pump is additionally performed by changing of sizes and locations of the hospital building. The computed results show that energy cost of water storage air source heat pump is low, so it is more economical than absorption chiller & heater.

Failure Analysis of Air Vent Connected with Heat Supply Pipeline Under Manhole (맨홀에 설치된 지역난방 열공급관 에어벤트의 전단부 파손 원인 규명)

  • The air vent connected to a heat supply pipeline in the district heating system has been used to eliminate the existing air in the pipe, which has a detrimental effect on corrosion durability and heat efficiency. Recently, the air vent installed under a manhole for 22 years was corroded and several pinholes were detected in the front-end of the air vent. To identify the cause of the failure, thickness reduction, corrosion products, and water quality were examined. The corrosion damage was significant at the outside of the front-end of the air vent where the insulator was covered. While a thin oxide layer was formed in the interior of the tube, the coarse and porous corrosion products consisting of magnetite and hematite were found externally. Water flowing into the thermal insulator was absorbed by the insulator following hydrolysis. The hydrolyzed insulator ejected the corrosion factors such as Cl-, SO42-, and NH4+. The findings suggest that the corrosion under insulation due to rain water is the main cause of the underlying failure in the air vent.

  • With increment on interesting about improving renewable energy efficiency, many research have been conducted and the research about hybrid air-water heater using solar energy that can make heating air and hot water has been conducted also. In this experiment, the temperature difference and thermal efficiency were investigated when two heating medium(air and liquid) was working simultaneously. As a result, thermal efficiency showed 44% to 88% when these heating medium was working simultaneously depending on operation condition and it is better than traditional solar collector. Also possibility of application into building equipment also was confirmed based on temperature and thermal efficiency. But necessity of additional studies about proper operation condition according to purpose of use and heat load was confirmed because change of thermal efficiency by air velocity and flux of liquid was shown a huge difference.

  • We have researched 10,811 schools to evaluate the characteristics of school buildings and the conditions of heating and cooling systems at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Air conditioning systems in school buildings are related to school scale, and 35% of the researched schools have less than 10 air conditioned classrooms among all of the schools in Korea. The LOADSYS is used to grasp the characteristics of school buildings heating and cooling load. From the results of this work, the heating load differs by nearly 24% between Seoul and Busan, but other than that there are not so many serious regional differences. Almost 85.4% of the classrooms are equipped with heating facilities and 6.9% of them are equipped with heating and cooling facilities. As a result, it is necessary to make improvements in 31.8% of the classrooms using only heaters and 14.6% of the classrooms not equipped with HVAC. The survey shows that there is a wide gap in the heating equipment status of the classrooms according to the region and school district.

An experimental study of defrosting behaviors on the fin-tube heat exchanger with PTC heating sheet (PTC 전열시트를 사용한 핀-관 열교환기의 제상 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • In this work, the defrosting characteristics of PTC heating sheet used as a defrosting heat source of fin-tube heat exchanger in a refrigerator have been experimentally compared with those of conventional electric heater. It is found that the characteristics of water draining rate with defrosting time show smoothly oscillating pattern when PTC heating sheet is used, and the drained water is completely melted. The defrosting efficiency of the PTC heating sheet is about 75%, which represents about 25% higher than that of the electric heater. A reduction of defrosting time and an increase of defrosting efficiency may be obtained by improving the arrangement of heating elements of the heating sheet. It is shown that the defrosting time of PTC heating sheet increases linearly with the amount of frost, however the defrosting efficiency is nearly constant. In the application to the refrigerating system, one should notice the fact that the defrosting performance of PTC heating sheet may be defraded due to the repeated operations.
