The objectives of the present work is to investigate the influence of the solution cooled absorber(SCA), refrigerant drain heat exchanger(RSX), exhaust gas/solution heat exchanger(ESX) and high efficiency solution heat exchanger on COP for a double-effect series-flow absorption chiller. A simulation program has been prepared for the cycle analysis of absorption chillers. As a result, Solution heat exchangers(LSX, HSX) are a most effective element for the COP than the others. In spite of the poor contribution to COP, SCA make a rule to reduce the crystallization phenomena of LiBr solution at solution heat exchanger. And the optimum solution split ratio are varied with the relative size of RSX and LSX.

Numerical analysis using finite volume method has been carried out to examine the effect of degree of superheat of LiBr aqueous solution on heat and mass transfer occurred in absorption process. According to the result of this study, it was found that refrigerant vaper was generated at the entrance region of absorber when LiBr aqueous soltion was superheated. As the degree of superheat increases, heat transfer rate increases and vapor absorption rate decreases. The increase in averaged Nusselt and Sherwood numbers could be found as film Reynolds number increases. The larger the degree of superheat, the greater the averaged Nusselt and Sherwood numbers.

In order to utilize the condensation heat of refrigerants in condenser on the absorption chiller system, the solution cooled condenser (SCC) was proposed using the weak solution of absorber as a cooling medium. The increase of COP with the increase of UA of the solution cooled condenser was approximately 0.009 in maximum with single effect one, and is about maximum 0.008 in occasion of double effect one with series flow compared to that without. In the case of heat exchanger, effectiveness is about 0.85, it's increments are 0.008 and 0.0072, respectively. And solution cooled condenser is more effective device in the single effect absorption system than double effect system for the principle of operation. On the other hand, as the solution split ratio increases when the value of UA is fixed, COP is increased and as the solution split ratio increases when the value of UA is fixed, COP is increased. If the flow rate of cooling water or the value of UA is reduced in order to increases the heat recovery of solution cooled condenser, heat recovery of solution cooled condenser is increased a little but COP is decreased as the system pressure is increased.

In this study, heat and mass transfer characteristics of five components solution (LiBr+Lil+LiNO$_3$+LiCl+$H_2O$) which could be substituted for commonly used LiBr solution are tested using a helical absorber. The arrangement of helical-typed heat exchangers allows to make the system more compact as compared to conventional one. The effects of experimental parameters, such as the solution flow rate, cooling water, solution temperature, solution concentration and surfactant have been investigated in view of the heat and mass transfer. The results of the experiment of heat and mass transfer performance show that five components solution should have 2% higher concentration fur equal absorption capacity of LiBr solution. But considering that five components solution have higher solubility than LiBr solution about 4% high concentration, five components solution could be applied to a small sized water cooled or air cooled absorption chiller/heater. The increase of heat and mass transfer coefficient by surfactant addition is about 25∼30% and 23∼40% respectively.

In absorption system, the performance of the absorber is critical the overall system performance, size, and first-cost. The objective of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the significant effects that researchers have made to numerically analysis model the coupled heat and mass transfer process that occur during falling-film absorption and experimental researches. This study includes experimental work in the enhancement of absorption performance, the effect of the geometry of a vertical absorber, and the effect of configuration of absorption system. This paper is used to highlight key areas which need attention such as film ans vapor hydrodynamics, especially the non-periodicity, instability, and recirculatory motion of waves in the vertical absorber case.

Numerical analyses have been performed to estimate the absorption heat and mass transfer coefficients in absorption process of the LiBr aqueous solution and the total heat and mass transfer rates in a vertical tube absorber which is coolING ed by air. Axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system was adopted to model the circular tube and the transport equations were solved by the finite volume method. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by water vapor in tube. Effects of film Reynolds number on heat and mass transfer coefficients have been also investigated. Especially, effects of tube diameter have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the tube. Based on the analysis it has been found that the total mass transfer rate increases rapidly in a region with low film Reynolds number(10 ~ 40) as the film Reynolds number increases, while decreases beyond that region. The total heat and mass transfer rates increase with increasing the tube diameter.

This research was concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes are a bare inner surface. a groove inner surface, a corrugated inner surface and a spring inserted inner surface tubes. The additive concentration was about 0.08 mass%. The heat transfer coefficient was measured as a function of the film Reynolds number in the range of 20~200. Experiments were carried out at higher cooling water temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ to simulate an air cooling condition for several kinds of absorber testing tubes. The experimental results were compared with and without surfactant. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which was generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube. Especially, it is clarified that the tube with an inserted spring has the highest enhancement effect.

In this study, in order to utilize the waste heat of industrial wastewater in the range of the relatively low temperature of 40~5$0^{\circ}C$ as a heat source, a hybrid heat pump system was considered by computer simulation method. In the simulation, an absorber, desorber and solution heat exchanger were modelled by UA values while a compressor and pump performance were specified by an isentropic efficiency. Simulation results show that the performance of hybrid heat pump can be up to 80% higher than that of conventional R134a heat pump when it makes a process hot water of 9$0^{\circ}C$ while the wastewater is cooled down to 2$0^{\circ}C$. As the absorber pressure increases, the system performance and deserter pressure increase with a favorable effect of a compressor discharge gas temperature drop.

Heat and mass transfer characteristics of a surfactant-added LiBr-$H_2O$ solution flowing over a single horizontal tube were examined experimentally. The parameters considered were surfactant (2-ethyl-1-hexanol) concentration, solution temperature at the top of the tube and absorber pressure. Even with an amount of the surfactant below the solubility limit, heat and mass transfer performances were enhanced tremendously. The Nusselt and Sherwood numbers increased by about 70% and 340%, respectively, when 10 ppm of the surfactant was added. However, an excess amount of the surfactant in the solution did not bring a further enhancement. The absorption performance deteriorated when the non-condensable gases were extracted from the system (by a vacuum pump) since the vaporized surfactant was also extracted during the process. Therefore, it is desirable to add a sufficient amount of the surfactant (more than 10 ppm) to maintain high performance of absorption.

A generator-GAX combined rectification system of an ammonia absorption heat pump was investigated to get the optimum design values. The mass and heat transfer phenomena of the rectification system were analysed. The number of column plates, equilibrium temperature of solution on each plate and flow rates of solution and vapor generated were predicted. The characteristics of mass and heat transfer of the generator-GAX combined rectification system, i.e. concentration difference of leaving solution and vapor on each column plate, were found to be mainly governed by the pressure of generator, reflex ratio and temperature difference of analyser coolant. The number of rectification column plates for each different pressure in generator was obtained. The optimum locations for installing the feeder from solution-cooled absorber and GAX desorber in generator were predicted. The improvement of COP was followed by the increase of the rectifier efficiency and the number of column plate, and the decrease of reflex ratio.
