  • The evaluation of the noise for the an existing engine was carried out to improve the current noise level. The applied techniques were 1m air-borne noise, combustion noise analysis, torsional analysis at the front pulley and sound pressure intensity. In addition, the evaluation of the possibility to the noise reduction by means of wrapping the parts was performed to propose the detailed information in engine design. In view of the obtained results, the following countermeasures were recommended to reduce the current noise level through the above methods. Furthermore, in order to assess the influence of combustion noise on the overall engine noise, the noise test was also performed by the change of intake air temperature up to 5$0^{\circ}C$ in steps of 1$0^{\circ}C$. Finally, the fixed design specifications to reduce the engine noise will be decided in consideration of the test data for proto type engine.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted in order to evaluate the microbiological contamination of the indoor air of the lunchrooms at child care centers and investigate the toxin genes and toxin production ability of food-borne pathogens. Methods: A total of 64 child care centers were sampled to test total aerobic bacteria, coliform bacteria, fungi, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus and Salmonella spp. according to the Korea Food Code. All toxin genes of pathogens were detected using the Polymerase Chain Reaction method. The Sthaph. aureus enterotoxin was detected by a Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin-reversed passive latex agglutination kit. The heamolysin BL (HBL) and non-heamolytic enterotoxin (NHE) produced by B. cereus were detected using a B. cereus enterotoxin-reversed passive latex agglutination kit and Bacillus diarrheal enterotoxin visual immunoassay kit, respectively. Results: The means of total aerobic bacteria and coliform bacteria were $1.91{\pm}1.84$ log CFU/plate and $0.47{\pm}0.62$ log CFU/plate, respectively. The mean of fungi also showed $0.59{\pm}0.71$ log CFU/plate. Among the pathogenic bacteria tested in this study, Staphy. aureus and B. cereus were detected in four (6.3%) and 21 (32.8%) out of 64 indoor air samples from lunchrooms in child care centers, respectively. All Staphy. aureus tested in this study possessed no toxin genes and did not produce enterotoxin. The detection rate of nheABC, hblCDA, entFM and ces toxin gene in B. cereus was 100, 57.1, 76.2 and 0%, respectively. B. cereus isolates were classified into four groups according to the presence or absence of toxin genes. The nheABC gene was the major toxin gene among B. cereus tested in this study. The HBL was detected in 11 out of 21 B. cereus isolates (52.4%) and three B. cereus isolates produced NHE (14.3%). Conclusion: The results indicated that the contamination by microorganisms in the indoor air of lunchrooms was unqualified to supply safe catering in child care centers. The ongoing control of indoor air quality is required.

  • The recent rise in SARS and bird flu infections around the world has raised the interest in studying the habits of air borne pathogens such as germs and viruses. In this study, simulations were carried out to predict the performance of UVGI air sterilizer at preventing airborne infections inside a car, based on the installation position and the removing effect of the UVGI air sterilizer. Simulation results showed that the UVGI air sterilizer was most effective when located at the rear side of the front seats. It was also showed that when the out-air mode and the UVGI air sterilizer were set to the highest capacity, the microbial safety levels were maintained in a car for 21 hours.

  • Air-borne plant pathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearum and seed-borne plant pathogenic bacterium Burkholderia glumae are cause similar disease symptoms in rice heads. Here we showed that two pathogens frequently co-isolated in rice heads and F. graminearum is resistant to toxoflavin produced by B. glumae while other fungal genera are sensitive to the toxin. We have tried to clarify the resistant mechanism of F. graminearum against toxoflavin and the ecological reason of co-existence of the two pathogens in rice. We found that F. graminearum carries resistance to toxoflavin as accumulating lipid in fungal cells. Co-cultivation of two pathogens resulted in increased conidia and enhanced chemical attraction and attachment of the bacterial cells to the fungal conidia. Bacteria physically attached to fungal conidia, which protected bacterium cells from UV light and allowed disease dispersal. Chemotaxis analysis showed that bacterial cells moved toward the fungal exudation compared to a control. Even enhanced the production of phytotoxic trichothecene by the fungal under presence of toxoflavin and disease severity on rice heads was significantly increased by co-inoculation rather than single inoculation. This study suggested that the undisclosed potentiality of air-born infection of bacteria using the fungal spores for survival and dispersal.

  • 208 yeast strains were isolated from air at El-Minia city, Egypt. Using 22 morphologi cal and physiological merkmals, these strains were identified and assignned to eight species belonging to seven genera. Rhodotorula mucilaginosa and Cryptococcus albidus were the most dominant species followed by Debaryomyces hansenii. These yeast species occurred regularly, whereas other species appeared sporadically. Rh. rubra, Saccharomyces kluyveri and Rh. aurantiaca were also isolated from the sampled air. The results of this study showed that time, hight and area of air sampling affect composition and total counts of yeast microflora in the air.

  • The air sterilization systems are investigated experimentally in this paper. The goal is to reduce bacteria, mold and viruses in office air by using a UV sterilizer installed inside a partition panel and wall-mounted unit. These systems allow occupants to turn the system on/off and to control the incoming air speed and direction. The partition air sterilization system conditions and sterilizes the air, and then delivers the clean air into the personal task area through the partition panels, which are connected to the pressurized under-floor plenum. Room air exits through the return grills mounted on the ceiling. The wall-mounted air sterilization system sterilizes the air, and then delivers the clean air to the personal task area from the wall. In this study a full-size experimental environment is established to investigate the immunization performance of these air sterilization systems. A typical office space scale is used in this study in order to find an optimal system to achieve a sterilized healthy micro-environment. Multiple system parameters, including volume flow rate and velocity of supplied air, were regulated during the experiments. The more air contact these air sterilization systems had, the better disinfection performance. Over 90% of eradication ratios were obtained by these two air sterilization systems. The results indicate that these systems can efficiently disinfect office air contamination.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the Korean residents' subjective opinion of the noise on the lowrise multifamily house in America. The results of this study can be applied for the prevention of noise when planning cities, roads, and multifamily houses in Korea. The subjects of this study are three kinds of multifamily houses and their 124 Korean residents in Athens, America. The results of this study are as follows. The Korean residents felt the noise from lawn mowers and the sound of filter fan of air conditioners were higher than all the other external noise. They were disturbed a little by the external noise. The air borne sound was recognized a little by Korean residents but they only felt moderate sound of building services and household equipment from the solid borne sound of the internal noise. They suffered worse from external noise in the summer and they felt worse from 8~12 o'clock due to external noise and 20~24 o'clock due to internal noise. The Korean residents liked the sound of birds or insects, the sound of cars and trains. However many Korean people in Athens disliked the sounds of birds or insects and lawn mowers more than these sounds in Korea. The Korean residents who were living in the apartment houses felt better than those in the other multifamily houses.

  • Tire noise is divided into a road noise(structure-borne noise) and a pattern noise(air-borne noise). Whilst the road noise is caused by the structural vibration of the components on the transfer path from tire to car body, the pattern noise is generated by the air-pumping between tire and road. In this paper, a practical method to estimate the pattern noise inside a passenger car is proposed. The method is developed based on the sound intensity and airborne source quantification. Sound intensity is used for identifying the noise sources of tire. Airborne source quantification is used for estimating the sound pressure level generated by each noise source of a tire. In order to apply the airborne source quantification to the estimation of the sound pressure, the volume velocity of each source should be obtained. It is obtained by using metrics inverse method. The proposed method is successfully applied to the evaluation of the interior noises generated by four types of tires with different pattern each other.
