Numerical Analysis of Convective Heat and Mass Transfer around Human Body under Strong Wind

  • The overarching objective of this study is to predict the convective heat transfer around a human body under forced strong airflow conditions assuming a strong wind blowing through high-rise buildings or an air shower system in an enclosed space. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of the flow field and temperature distributions around a human body were carried out to estimate the convective heat transfer coefficient for a whole human body assuming adult male geometry under forced convective airflow conditions between 15 m/s and 25 m/s. A total of 45 CFD analyses were analyzed with boundary conditions that included differences in the air velocity, wind direction and turbulence intensity. In the case of approach air velocity $U_{in}=25m/s$ and turbulent intensity TI = 10%, average convective heat transfer coefficient was estimated at approximately $100W/m^2/K$ for the whole body, and strong dependence on air velocity and turbulence intensity was confirmed. Finally, the formula for the mean convective heat transfer coefficient as a function of approaching average velocity and turbulence intensity was approximated by using the concept of equivalent steady wind speed ($U_{eq}$).

  • Flame stabilization characteristics were experimentally investigated in a fuel-air cross flowing mixing layer. A combustor consists of a narrow channel of air steam and a cross flowing fuel. Depending on the flow rates of methane and air, flame can be stabilized in two modes. First is an attached flame which is formulated at the backward step where the methane and air streams meet. Second is a lifted-flame which is formulated within the mixing layer far down steam from backward step. The heights and flame widths of the lifted flames were measured. Flame shapes of the lifted flames were similar to an ordinary edge flame or a tribrachial flame, and their behavior could be explained with the theories of an edge flame. With the increase of the mixing time between fuel and air, the fuel concentration gradient decreases and the flame propagation velocity increases. Thus the flame is stabilized where the flow velocity is matched to the flame propagation velocity in spite of a significant disturbance in the fuel mixing and heat loss within the channel. This study provides many experimental results for a higher fuel concentration gradient, and it can also be helpful for the development and application of a smaller combustor.

  • Air-solid bed has been known to be an effective heat transfer augmentation device which could be applied to heat exchangers. In this study, pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of vertical annular fluidized bed heat exchanger with air flowing through were studied experimentally. The experiments was conducted to calculate overall heat transfer coefficient on fluidized bed heat exchangers immersed single vertical tube and investigate minimum fluidized velocity in fluidized bed of alumina beads and steel balls. The influence of flow direction, particle diameter, the heights of static bed and air mass fluidizing velocity has been examined. The experimental results showed the optimum operating condition and effective static bed height for fluidized bed heat exchangers. For the same power loss, comparisions of heat transfer effect between the fluidized bed heat exchanger and the single phase forced convetion heat exchanger indicate that both miniaturization of heat exchanger and heat transfer augmentation at low flow velocity are possible by application of the air-solid to heat exchangers.

  • The present study measured frost pattern on a cylinder to propose empirical correlation equations for the local and average frost thickness, frost density and frost mass. The key parameters were diameter of the cylinders (7mm, 20mm), cooling surface temperature of the circular tube, absolute humidity of air, air temperature and air velocity. A 50% ethylene glycol aqueous solution was applied as a coolant. The frost thicknesses at both front and rear were larger than those at the other parts, while they were increased as diameter of the cylinder was increased. The local frost thicknesses at high air velocity were more uniform than those at low air velocity. The values predicted by Kim et al. under the freezer condition showed larger by the maximum of $30{\sim}50%$ than the measured data under heat pump condition. The empirical correlations for the local and average frost thickness and frost mass were proposed. The correlation equations for the frost thickness and frost mass under the heat pump condition in the present study might predict more accurate than the other correlation equations. The proposed correlations might be applied for the freezer condition within the maximum 15% deviation from the previous correlations under freezer condition.

Air-coupled ultrasonic tomography of solids: 1 Fundamental development

  • Ultrasonic tomography is a powerful tool for identifying defects within an object or structure. But practical application of ultrasonic tomography to solids is often limited by time consuming transducer coupling. Air-coupled ultrasonic measurements may eliminate the coupling problem and allow for more rapid data collection and tomographic image construction. This research aims to integrate recent developments in air-coupled ultrasonic measurements with current tomography reconstruction routines to improve testing capability. The goal is to identify low velocity inclusions (air-filled voids and notches) within solids using constructed velocity images. Finite element analysis is used to simulate the experiment in order to determine efficient data collection schemes. Comparable air-coupled ultrasonic signals are then collected through homogeneous and isotropic solid (PVC polymer) samples. Volumetric (void) and planar (notch) inclusions within the samples are identified in the constructed velocity tomograms for a variety of transducer configurations. Although there is some distortion of the inclusions, the experimentally obtained tomograms accurately indicate their size and location. Reconstruction error values, defined as misidentification of the inclusion size and position, were in the range of 1.5-1.7%. Part 2 of this paper set will describe the application of this imaging technique to concrete that contains inclusions.

An Experimental Study on the Ballistic Accuracy by Air Guide Grooves (공기안내홈이 탄도 정확도에 미치는 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study has been found the air guide grooves for reducing drag. When a bullet is fired and move in the air, the drag is generated. The vortex which is one of the types of drag hinders the movement of the bullet. To solve this phenomenon, cut a negative grooves that we are called the air guiding grooves at the back of bullet. The grooves bullet has identified that the drag compared to conventional ammunition(KM80 and K193) is reduced to 4.480 and 4.054 : 10 % through a Finite Analysis Program($Ansys^{TM}$). Even pressure center was retreating 0.72 % compared to a Bullet(KM80 and K193). Effect obtained with these results is the accuracy of the grooves bullet in a shooting test was improved by over 32 %(KM80: 2.86, air guide grooves : 1.94) compared to conventional ammunition(KM80 and K193). In addition, muzzle velocity is increased 73 m/s. This is expected to be extended the velocity and effective range of bullet. Also, the velocity of the grooves bullet is increased when moving in the air while the velocity of the bullet(KM80 and K193) is reduced. The gas ejected from the muzzle to be balanced and stable flight of the Bullet. Given these effects, we can reckon the air guide grooves have positive influence.

Effect of Drying Air Velocity on the Quality of Salted and Dried Mullet Roe (영암어라인의 품질에 대한 건조풍속의 영향)

  • The salted and dried mullet(Mugil Japonicus) roe had about 42% of protein and 41% of lipid content as major compoments. Therefore the lipid oxidation and the deterioration of protein occurred during drying and storage periods. In order to keep the good quality of the dried roe, acid, peroxide, thiobarbituric acid value and the contitutional amino acid were studied in the different drying air velocities at the conditions of 60% R.H. and $20^{\circ}C$ of drying air temperature. The optimum air velocity showed 2m/sec, which was excellently superior to the lipid and protein quality than those of other air velocities on the dried mullet roe. The drying period shortened from 20 days in the conventional processing method to 7 days in the modified processing method that had 2m/sec of drying air velocity. The drying rate curve had only a falling-rate drying period and not to have a constant-rate drying period.

  • The experiment was conducted to predict air movements and to analyzxe the ventilation characteristics in ventilated greenhouse. Relatively high wind velocity was checked near windward inlet, but near leeward outlet and indoor very low wind velocity near to zero was checked . Despite of much influent air, indoor temperature was watched as high values uniformly due to inadequate air flow in greenhouse and low ventilation efficiency of the greenhouse.

  • This study represents the numerical analysis of natural convection of a microenvironments with a air permeability in the clothing air-layer. The clothing air layer of shoulder and arm was used for numerical analysis model. As a numerical analysis method, we adopted a finite volume method for two-dimensional laminar flow, and analyzed the flow and thermal characteristics of velocity, temperature and concentration in the air layer between body and clothing. As a temperature boundary conditions, we considered that a body skin has a high temperature with $34^{\circ}C$ the environmental temperatures are $5,\;15\;and\;25^{\circ}C$ for various permeability coefficients. The distributions of concentration, temperature and velocity were showed that two large cells were. formed at horizontal and vertical air layer, respectively. As the temperature difference between body skin and environment decrease, the heat transfer was decreased rapidly.

  • Recently, the work machine is widely used in the agricultural machine and to use the power source of the tractor, the mower had been widely used as a working machine for mowing. The mower is classified as a front mower, mid-mower, and rear mower according to the mounting position of the lower frame on tractor. The main structure of mower is composed of deck, gearbox, and blade. This study concerns a study on air flow characteristics of Mid-mower for tractor. An air flow characteristics of the Mid-mower deck was evaluated by the velocity vector, flow path, and total air flow according to the number of revolutions. As the analysis results, The inner path of designed deck had no effect on air flow.
