A Study on the Rotordynamic Characteristics of the Micro Turbo Generator (터보 방식으로 구동되는 마이크로 파워 시스템의 회전체 동역학적 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The micro turbo generator is new portable power source based on the Brayton cycle, which consists of a compressor, a turbine, a generator, and a combustion chamber. In this paper, the thermodynamic analysis was performed to find the required condition for hundreds watts power in the micro turbo generator, and also the rotordynamic stability was predicted using the numerical analysis of air foil bearings which support the micro turbo generator. By experimental works, the rotordynamic stability of the micro turbo generator with foil bearings was verified. While various transient dynamic situation, the micro turbo generator had stable performances. From the result, it was demonstrated that air foil bearings could be adapted to the micro turbo generator as a excellent lubrication element.

  • Air foil bearings have been attempted for application to industrial turbo machines, since they have several advantages over oil bearings in terms of endurance, simplicity, environment-friendliness, efficiency, sound and vibration, and small turbo machines with air foil bearings are in the market as the result. Recently, researches on widening the application spectrum of air foil bearings are in progress worldwide. In this paper, a 300 HP class turbo blower using air foil bearings is introduced. The turbo blower has a high speed PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) driving a compressor, and air flow rate is designed to be $180\;m^3/min$ at pressure ratio of 1.6. The maximum rotational speed is set to 17,000 RPM to maximize the total efficiency with the result that the weight of rotor assembly is 26kg, which is expected to be the largest turbo machine with air foil bearings ever developed in the world.

  • In this study rotordynamic characteristics of an air turbo-compressor (ATC) used in oxygen plant are analyzed and its operating-speed balancing is performed to solve the vibration trouble caused by rotor unbalance. Three dimensional model of the ATC rotor is completed and then analytical FE (finite element) model, which is verified by experimental modal testing, is developed. A rotordynamic analysis includes the critical map, Campbell diagram, and unbalance response, especially considering the pedestal housings supporting tilting pad bearings. A test run of operating-speed, using tilting-pad bearing of actual use, showed that the vibration level increased very sharply as approaching the rated speed. The operating-speed balancing specified by API 684 was carried out by using influence coefficient method. The results showed that the vibrations at the bearing pedestal housings represented good levels of 0.1 mm/s. From the test run and operating-speed balancing, the analytical results, that is, critical speeds are in good agreement with the test results and unbalance responses introducing the correction masses are similar to the as-is test responses in its aspect.

  • Many recent development activities suggest the possibility of a high-speed turbo(centrifugal) compressor or blower for the industrial application of compressed air supplying system when used with the most advanced high-speed motor, inverter technology, and advanced bearing for high rotational speed. The problems to be overcome are of reliability, the application of mass production methods, cost effective manufacture and competitive running costs. This presentation is not focused on a specific technology advances but on an overall review of our recent experiences while we have developed the high pressure turbo blower for the commercial purpose.

Integration of the Engine Control into the Optimal Trajectory Determination for a Spaceplane

  • In this paper are presented TSTO system analysis including some controlled variables on the engine operation such as a fuel flow rate and a pressure ratio of compressor, as well as variables on the trajectory. TSTO studied here is accelerated up to Mach 6 by a fly-back booster powered by air breathing engines. Three different types of engine cycle were treated for propulsion system of the booster, such as a turbo ramjet, a precooled turbojet and an EXpander cycle Air Turbo Ramjet (ATREX). The history of the controlled variables on the engine operation was optimized by Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) to accomplish the minimum fuel consumption. The trajectory was also optimized simultaneously. The results showed that the turbo ramjet gave the best fuel consumption. The optimal trajectory was almost the same except in the transonic range and just before reaching to Mach 6. The history of the pressure ratio of compressor considerably depended on the engine type. It is concluded that simultaneous optimization for engine control and trajectory is effective especially for a high-speed airplane propelled by turbojets like the TSTO booster.

  • FCEV uses electric energy which generated from the reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen in fuel cell stack as driving force. As fossil fuels are exhausted, fuel cell is regarded as a potent substitute for next generation energy source, and thus, most of car-makers make every efforts to develop fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). In addition, fuel cell is also beneficial in aspect of environment, because only clean water is produced during chemical reaction process instead of harmful exhausted gas. Generally, Hydrogen is supplied from high-pressured fuel tank, and air blower (or compressor) supply Oxygen by pressurizing ambient air. Air blower which is driven by high speed motor consumes about $7{\sim}8$ % of energy generated from fuel cell stack. Therefore, the efficiency of an air blower is directly linked with the performance of FCEV. This study will present the development process of an air blower and its consisting parts respectively.

  • Recently, needs for UAVs and small aircraft and small turbo jet or turbo fan engines for these air-crafts are increasing. Size and weight are the two main restrictions in small air-crafts such as UAV or VLJ propulsion system applications. Therefore, high power density is required in small size and designers come up with unconventional solutions in the design of small aero gas turbine engines. One of the solutions is the usage of highly loaded axial compressors. This paper introduces an aerodynamic design method of a highly loaded axial compressor and its review process. Numerical simulation has been carried out to assess the aerodynamic performance of the compressor.

  • Spray visualization of a vaporizer fuel injection system of a micro turbo jet engine was experimentally studied. The fuel heating by combustion was simulated by the high pressure steam generator and combustor inlet air from the centrifugal compressor was simulated by compressed air stored in the high pressure air tank. Spray visualization was performed with single vaporizer, and then six vaporizers which are same number of micro turbojet engine were used. As a results, the spray characteristics of the vaporizer were understood with pressure difference of the combustor inlet air and the fuel supply pressure. Spray angles with three types of vaporizer configuration were measured. In the results, guide vane configuration has a wider spray angle than the straight tube and smooth curve tube with a swirler, so it is expected that the fuel will be effectively distributed inside the combustor flame tube.
