  • This study discribes characteristics of water spray for extinguishment of gasoline fire. Experiments are carried out for the gasoline pool fire nth the atomizing nozzles. Droplet size, spray pressure, amount of water which reaches the flame base and velocity of water spray are measured to find extinguishment conditions. Air entrainment due to the water spray and extinguishing process of gasoline fire by water spray are visualized. Boundary conditions of water spray for extinguishment of gasoline pool fire is quantitatively shown. As the result of experiments, it is found that the velocity of entrainment air and sprayed water are almost same and the water droplets size having small diameter under 40$\mu\textrm{m}$ can not extinguish the fire because too small droplets does not reach the fuel surface.

  • In order to calculate the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI), it is necessary to collect weather data (air temperature, humidity, wind speed and solar radiation) and canopy temperature. However, it is not always available to have necessary data sets for CWSI calculation. Therefore, this study was aimed to develop an easy and simple CWSI equation (CWSIEE) using only two data, air and canopy temperatures. Infrared sensors and weather sensors were installed on apple and peach trees and nearby a study area and every ten-minute data were collected from June to October in 2018 and 2019, respectively. A relationship between air-canopy temperature difference and CWSI was statistically analyzed and used to develop CWSIEE using the three dimensional Gaussian model. The performance of CWSIEE against original CWSI showed R2 and NSE to 0.780 and 0.710 for apple trees and R2 and NSE to 0.884 and 0.866 for peach trees. This study found that the level of crop water stress could be easily calculated using CWSIEE with only air and canopy temperature data.

  • In-situ Air Sparging (IAS, AS) is a remediation technique in which organic contaminants are volatilized from saturated zone to unsaturated layer. This study focuses on the removal and interaction of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and $CO_2$, and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) in saturated and unsaturated, and air space zone on the unsaturated soil surface. Soil sparging temperature of hot air has risen to $34.9{\pm}2.7^{\circ}C$ from $23.0{\pm}1.9^{\circ}C$ for 36 days. At the diffusing point, fluid TPH concentrations were reduced to 78.7% of the initial concentration in saturated zone when hot air was sparged. The TPH concentrations were decreased to 66.1% for room temperature air sparging. The amount of VOCs for hot air sparging system, in air space, was approximately 26% larger than constant air sparging system. The amount of $CO_2$ was 4,555 mg (in unsaturated zone) and 4,419 mg (in air space) when hot air was sparged was 3,015 mg (in unsaturated zone) and 3,634 mg (in air space) for room air temperature in the $CO_2$ amount. The removals of VOCs and biodegradable $CO_2$ through the hot air sparging system (modified SVE) were more effective than the room temperature air sparging. The regression equation were $Y=976.4e^{-0.015{\cdot}X}$, $R^2=0.98$ (hot air sparging) and $Y=1055e^{-0.028{\cdot}X}$, $R^2=0.90$ (room temperaure air sparging). Estimated remediation time was approximately 500 days, if final saturated soil TPH concentration was set to 1.2 mg/L application of tail effect.

  • Vertical profiles of mean and fluctuating wind velocities over water waves were studied, by performing Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) on a fully developed turbulent boundary layer over simplified water waves. The water waves were simplified to two-dimensional, periodic and non-evolving. Different wave steepness defined by $a/{\lambda}$ (a : wave amplitude; ${\lambda}$ : wavelength) and wave age defined by $c/U_b$ (c: phase velocity of the wave; $U_b$ : bulk velocity of the air) were considered, in order to elaborate the characteristics of mean and fluctuating wind profiles. Results shows that, compared to a static wave, a moving wave plays a lesser aerodynamic role as roughness as it moves downstream slower or a little faster than air, and plays more aerodynamic roles when it moves downstream much faster than air or moves in the opposite direction to air. The changes of gradient height, power law index, roughness length and friction velocity with wave age and wave amplitude are presented, which shed light on the wind characteristics over real sea surfaces for wind engineering applications.

  • The performance of the cold latent heat storage is investigated by experiment and by a simplified analytic approach. The heat storage tank has eight horizontal circular tubes and one path of refrigerant evaporating tube. The phase change material in the heat storage tank is water which is frozen by evaporating refrigerant of refrigeration system and melts by the warm air in the heat storage tank. In the experiment, the performance has been studied by the various conditions including the initial water temperature on solidification and flow rate and temperature of air. The rate of recovered heat has been simulated by a simplified model and the results shows a good agreement. In solidification process, initial water temperature causes time delay corresponding to the sensible heat and it is found that the shape of evaporator is important. In melting process, the recovered heat rate from the heat storage tank is proportional to $Re^{0.8}(T_{bi}-T_f)$ of air where $T_{bi}$ and $T_f$ indicate temperatures of inlet air and phase change, respectively. And the deminishing rate of the recovered heat is higher for the higher heat rate.

  • This paper describes the PI controller design based on a practical transfer function model for centrifugal water chillers. The rotational speed of a compressor and the opening angle of an electronic expansion valve were simultaneously regulated as manipulated variables to maintain temperature reference and to ensure high efficiency of the chiller. The COP according to the change in each variable was investigated by performing some static experiments, and it was reflected in the PI controller design to accomplish the high efficiency control. Especially, the practical transfer function model of the chiller was built based on the dynamic experimental data considering the strong inherent non-linearity and complexity of the chiller system. The validity of the designed PI controller was proven by some experimental results using the test facility and the results were also compared to the conventional evaporating pressure control results.

  • The thermal performance of cooling towers is affected by the temperature of inlet water, wet bulb temperature of entering air and water-air flow rate. In this stud${\gamma}$, the effects of these variables are simulated using NTU-method and experimentally investigated for the counter-flow cooling towers. The simulation program to evaluate these variables which affect the performance of cooling tower was developed. The maximum errors between the results of simulations and experiments were 3.8% under the standard design conditions and 5.4% under the other conditions. The performance was increased up to 46~50% as the water loading was increased from 6.8$m^3/hr{\cdot}m^2$ to 159$m^3/hr{\cdot}m^2$. The range was reduced up to 56~42% when the wet bulb temperature of the entering air was increased from 22${\circ}C$ to 29${\circ}C$.

  • Accurate modeling rainfall induced landslide and slope stability requires a detailed knowledge of the distribution of material strength characteristics and suction distribution. However, material properties obtained from the drying cycle are still used for infiltration analysis in many cases, even though material properties of wetting cycle are quite different from those of drying cycle due to hydraulic hysteresis and air occlusion. Therefore, the selection of proper material properties such as soil-water retention curve (SWRC) and the hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) reflecting characteristics of wetting cycle and air occlusion is an essential prerequisite in order to simulate the infiltration phenomena and to predict the suction and water content distribution in unsaturated soils. It is concluded that the simulation of infiltration with material properties from the drying cycle did not reasonably match with experimental outputs. Further discussion is made on how to describe the material properties considering air occlusion during wetting cycle over the entire suction range in order to simulate infiltration phenomena.

  • In Korea while the dam or reservoir is an important water resource, the value of this water resource is deteriorating by thermal-induced stratification. To ameliorate the water quality of reservoir by breaking stratification the use of air diffuser system is now widespread in Korea. According to the previous research, dynamics of bubble plume and destratification efficiency depended upon two dimensionless groupings; Mh and Pn suggested by Asaeda et al (1993). However, these two variables only include Q, N, H, g, u. and installed Boryeong reservior in appropriate width of water aeration, air dose and number of installations after calculating by applying these figures. This paper is performed to find out effect analysis about water aeration improvement to break thermal stratification.
