  • The experimental of temperature, humidity and velocity was taken from the underground pit which utilized the system of ground heat source quite similar to the cool-pit system. Also, through CFD analysis, one could review the effectiveness of analysis of future alternatives. Furthermore, the temperature range of mock up cool-pit system was analyzed by inputting the weather data of annual average soil temperature provided by KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) into the fluid simulation of anticipated heat distribution. Firstly, the difference between the temperature of air exhaust of the pit or the temperature of air supply of the compressor room and the experimental data for the month of May from the CFD analysis came out to be $0.6^{\circ}C$ and $0.9^{\circ}C$ respectively with tolerance of 3.1% and 4.7%. Secondly, the difference between the temperature of air exhaust of the Pit or the temperature of air supply of the compressor room and the experimental data for the month of July from the CFD analysis came out to be $0.8^{\circ}C$ and $1.1^{\circ}C$ respectively with tolerance of 3.3% and 4.5%. Thirdly, for the month of May, the difference between the experimental data taken for the air exhaust of the Pit or the air supply of the compressor room and soil temperature provided by KMA for monthly and yearly average temperature of Jeonju region came out be $1.9^{\circ}C$ and $1.8^{\circ}C$ respectively with tolerance of 10.7% and 9.8%. Fourthly, for the month of July, the difference between the experimental data taken for the air exhaust of the Pit or the air supply of the compressor room and soil temperature provided by KMA for monthly and yearly average temperature of Jeonju region came out be $1.1^{\circ}C$ and $1.4^{\circ}C$ respectively with tolerance of 4.5% and 5.8%. The result of above experiments allowed us to establish CFD model set up as a verification tool that is based on experimental data collected within the Pit area. Also, one could confirm the possibility to apply weather data of soil temperature provided by KMA in order to anticipate proper value for CFD analysis.

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate the air quality surrounding an indoor swimming pool, to estimate the cancer risk based on the airborne exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs), and to examine the ventilation efficiency by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Chlorine and THMs were measured poolside, and in the staff room and reception area. The indoor swimming pool was modeled using the Airpak program, with ventilation drawings and actual survey data. Temperature, flow and mean age of the air were analyzed. Levels of chlorine poolside, and in the staff room, and reception area were $203\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $5\;{\mu}g/m^3$, and $10\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. Chloroform was the dominant THM in all sampling sites and mean concentrations were $16.30\;{\mu}g/m^3$, $0.51\;{\mu}g/m^3$, and $0.06\;{\mu}g/m^3$ poolside, in the staff room and reception area, respectively. Bromodichloromethane and Dibromochloromethane levels were respectively estimated as $10.3\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.7\;{\mu}g/m^3$ poolside, $1.3\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $0.1\;{\mu}g/m^3$ in the staff room, and were not detected in the reception area. The cancer risks from inhalation exposure to THMs were estimated between $3.37{\times}10^{-7}$ and $1.84{\times}10^{-5}$. A short circulation phenomenon was observed from the supply air vents to the exhaust air vents located in the ceiling. A high temperature layer was formed within one meter of the ceiling, and a low temperature layer was formed under this layer due to the low velocity and high temperature of the supply air, and the improper locations of the supply air vents and exhaust air vents. The stagnation was evident at the above adult pool and the mean age of the air was 22 minutes. Disinfection by-products in the indoor swimming pool were present in higher concentrations than in the outdoor air. In order to increase the removal of pollutants, adjustment was required of the supply air volume and the supply/exhaust position.

  • Exhaust system used in toilet and cooking place of high riser public house is roof fan of two basic types : natural roof ventilator and natural/forced roof ventilator. Natural/forced roof ventilator has a motor in the rotary shaft. There are many high riser public house in Korea. These buildings were not viewed as being major contributors to exhaust pollutants producted in indoor. It was because many engineers thought that exhaust in high riser building depend on stack effect. This study investigates on stack pressure determined by exterior pressure and the difference pressure control in exhaust stack used in high riser public house. This paper focuses mainly on the effect of the time interval for power supply of motor installed in roof fan with function of natural wind velocity and of exhaust air volume of toilet. It is observed there are higher exhaust efficiency than the existing natural roof ventilator.

  • There have been many cases when an air curtain installed in the apartment could not remove the gases well, such as carbon dioxide and particles like as smoke, oils, and vapors generated during cooking to disperse pollutants into the room. This study used a numerical analysis to show how the pollutant-removing performance of the range hood is changed when the air curtain is installed front of the kitchen table. The result of this study was that when the air amount supplied by an air curtain through the slot was about 50% of the exhaust amount, the capturing efficiency of the range hood for pollutants increased 90% more than without an air curtain. Even when the amount of supplied air was small, the capturing efficiency improved markedly with the use of an upward air curtain. In case that the air flow rate of the slot was greater than 60%, the capturing efficiency decreased.

  • This paper investigates ventilation characteristics of an environmental chamber simulating an under-floor air conditioning system for isothermal and cooling supply air conditions. The tracer gas sulfur-hexafluoride (SF$F_6$) was injected into a supply duct using step-up and step-down methods. Local mean and room mean ages were calculated from the concentrations measured at internal points and at the exhaust duct. The air change efficiency of the chamber has been found to be greater in cooling conditions than in isothermal conditions. Also the room air change efficiency is not significantly affected but slightly improved by the presence of a supply diffuser.

  • The importance of ventilation system is being emphasized by interest of indoor air quality. Especially, heat recovery ventilation system has attracted attention as most effective ventilation plan. Because it can reduce hazardous construction materials, indoor air pollutions, and also can reduce air conditioning energy cost. In heat recovery ventilator, the element core is the most important part. The element core is composed of liner and spacer. And liner and spacer are stacked alternately. On the Liner, heat and humidity transfer are made between supply and exhaust air. And spacer plays a role as a tunnel of exhaust and supply. In this study, we investigated and analyzed the efficiency of a heat recovery ventilator, when the spacer's properties are changed. As a result, difference spacer's properties affect an efficiency of heat recovery ventilator.

  • In order to control indoor air quality and save energy. it is needed to install a suitable ventilation system equipped with heat exchanger for heat recovery. Paper heat exchanger can recover $50{\sim}70$ of the enthalpy difference between supply and exhaust air. The purpose of this research is to obtain the experimental correlations for the friction factor, heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient and permeance of paper heat exchanger, which can be used for the performance prediction of the paper heat exchanger. Pressure drop at various velocities and heat transfer rate at various dry-bulb temperatures, relative humidities, and specific humidities are measured to make experimental correlations. The results of prediction using correlations show fairly good agreement with experimental data.

  • The waste bunker usually consists of waste entrance zone and waste pit. In this paper, the distributions of air flow, $NH_3$ concentration and $H_2S$ concentration in a waste bunker were investigated to prevent an odor generated in a waste pit from dispersing to the waste entrance zone by numerical method. Four cases were considered such that 1) the waste incinerators is operated, 2) the waste incinerators is stopped, 3) the waste incinerator is operated and the direction of a supply diffuser is $45^{\circ}$ upward, 4) the waste incinerator is stopped and the direction of a supply diffuser is $45^{\circ}$ upward. In case of 1), the fresh air from the waste entrance zone is exhausted smoothly to the main exhaust grill of the waste pit. It means that an odor dispersion to the waste entrance zone will not occur. However in case of 2), the induction of fresh air is so small and the supply air with an odor in waste pit can flow to the waste entrance zone. Therefore, an odor will be dispersed to the waste entrance zone. This paper shows the solution that the supply diffuser with the direction of $45^{\circ}$ upward is chosen. As a result in case of 3) and 4), an odor dispersion to the waste entrance zone does not occurred and on odor is exhausted smoothly to the auxiliary exhaust grill.
