  • Hanna - Gifford Model and Air Quality Display Model(AQDM) were validated in the simulation of $SO_2$ and TSP concentrations of Seoul City. The observed data which were measured at 16 sites of air monitoring system conducted by Seoul metropolitan city in 1984 were compared with the simulated data and the results were obtained as follows; 1. Several different meteorological data were examined: The particularities of meteorological data was not an influencing factor in the validity of simulation. The simulations of $SO_2$ by Hanna - Gifford model and by AQDM showed close correlation coefficients between the observed data and the simulated data (r = 0.71 - 0.78). 2. The simulation models showed different validities with the seasonal variation: The correlation coefficients (r) between the observed and the simulated by Hanna - Gifford Model for $SO_2$ and TSP were 0.86 and 0.80 in Spring, 0.63 and 0.66 in Summer, 0.76 in Autumn and 0.81 and 0.93 in Winter respectively. Those by AQDM were 0.73 and 0.68 in Spring, 0.56 and 0.79 in Summer, 0.77 and 0.76 in Autumn and 0.64 and 0.68 in Winter respectively. 3. The simulated data by two models had a close relationships: The correlation coefficients between them were 0.96 for $SO_2$, and 0.93 for TSP. With the above results, the application of models was discussed; Hanna - Gifford model was less valid in the simulation for the air quality of $SO_2$ and TSP in Seoul in Summer and AQDM also was not valid for $SO_2$ in Summer and in Winter and for TSP in Spring.

  • This paper presents a force model of the clean tube system, which was developed as a means of transferring air-floated wafers inside a closed tube filled with super clean air. The recovering force from the holes for floating wafers is modeled as a linear spring and thus the wafers motion is modeled as a mass-spring-damper system. The propelling forces are modeled as linear along with the wafer location. The paper also proposes a control method to emit and stop a wafer at the center of a control unit. It reveals the minimum value of the propelling force to leave from the control unit. In order to stop the wafer, it utilizes the exact time when the wafer arrives at the position to activate the propelling force. Experiments with the clean tube system built for the 12 inch wafer shows the validity of the proposed model and the algorithm.

  • This paper is concerned with the orthotropic problem of diaphragm-type air springs which consist of rubber linings, nylon reinforced rubber composite and bead ring. The analysis is carried out with a finite element method developed to consider the orthotropic properties, geometric nonlinearity using four-node degenerated shell element with reduced integration. Physical stabilization scheme is used to control the zero-energy modes of the element. An inflation analysis and a lateral deformation analysis of an air spring are carried out. Numerical analysis results demonstrate the variation of the outer diameter, the fold height, the vertical force and the lateral force.

  • One of the spring-link mechanisms, the air circuit breaker(ACB), was studied to improve the shock-proof characteristics of it. The low-cycle fatigue fracture phenomenon was occurred on the critical link, called h-link, of ACB for the repeated rapid closing and opening operations. To analyze the cause of failure, dynamic FE-analysis on the h-link part of ACB was accomplished with considered the velocity and acceleration of the links per time as boundary conditions, which were obtained by using ADAMS. Then, to reduce the maximum tensile stress on the h-link, three types of h-link were suggested and one of them was selected. Fmm this study, we suggested the process of analysis on the high-speed motion behavior part related low-cycle fatigue fractures.

The low-cycle fatigue fracture phenomenon occurred on the critical link, called h-link, of ACB from the repeated rapid closing and opening operations. To analyze the cause of failure, dynamic FE-analysis on the b-link part of ACB was performed considering tile velocity and acceleration of the links per time as boundary conditions, which were obtained by using ADAMS. Also, the S-N curve obtained by experiments was used to investigate requirement on the fatigue-proof characteristics. Then, to reduce the maximum tensile stress on the h-link, three types of h-link were examined and one of them was selected.

  • This paper presents wafer motion modeling of transfer unit in clean tube system, which was developed as a means for transferring the air-floated wafers inside the closed tube filled with the super clean airs. When the wafer is transferred in x direction with an initial velocity the motion along x direction can be modeled as a simple decaying motion due to viscous friction of the fluid. But, the motion in y direction is modeled as a mass-spring-damper system where the recovering force by air jets issued from the perforated is modeled as a linear spring. Experiments with a clean tube system built fur 12 wafer show the validity of the presented force and motion models.

  • Sliding and impact/sliding wear test in room temperature air and water were performed to evaluate the effect of spring shapes on the wear mechanism of a fuel rod. The main focus was to quantitatively compare the wear behavior of a fuel rod with different support springs (i.e. two concaves, a convex and a flat shape) using a ratio of wear volume to worn area (De)-The results indicated that the wear volumes at each spring condition were varied with the change of test environment and loading type. However, the relationship between the wear volume and worn area was determined by only spring shape even though the wear tests were carried out at different test conditions. From the above results, the optimized spring shape which has more wear-resistant could be determined using the analysis results of the relation between the variation of De and worn surface observations in each test condition.

  • Global climate warming induced by long-lived greenhouse gases is expected to cause increases in wildfire frequencies and intensity in boreal forest regions of mid- and high-latitudes in the future. Siberian forest fires are one of important sources for air pollutants such as ozone and aerosols over East Asia. Thus an accurate quantification of forest fire influences on air quality is crucial, in particular considering its higher occurrences expected under the future warming climate conditions. We here use the 3-D global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) with the satellite constrained fire emissions to quantify Siberian fire effects on ozone concentrations in East Asia. Our focus is mainly on spring 2003 when the largest fires occurred over Siberia in the past decade. We first evaluated the model by comparing to the EANET observations. The model reproduced observed ozone concentrations in spring 2003 with the high $R^2$ of 0.77 but slightly underestimated by 20%. Enhancements in seasonal mean ozone concentrations were estimated from the difference in simulations with and without Siberian fires and amounted up to 24 ppbv over Siberia. Effects of Siberian fires also resulted in 3-10 ppbv incresases in Korea and Japan. These increases account for about 5-15% of the ozone air quality standard of 60 ppbv in Korea, indicating a significant effect of Siberian fires on ozone concentrations. We found however that possible changes in regional meteorology due to Siberian fires may also affect air quality. Further study on the interaction between regional air quality and meteorology is necessary in the future.

  • The City of Boulder is located at an average elevation of 1,655 m (5,430 feet), the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Its daily air temperature is much varying and snow is very frequent and heavy even in spring. This paper examines characteristics of shallow (surface and depth = 10 cm) soil temperatures measured from January to May 2015 in the high elevation city Boulder, Colorado. The surface soil temperature quickly responded to the air temperature with the strongest periodicity of 1 day while the subsurface soil temperatures showed a less correlation and delayed response with that. The short-time Fourier of the soil temperatures uncovered their very low frequencies characteristics in heavy snow days while it revealed high frequencies of their variations in warm spring season. The daily minimum air temperature exhibited high cross-correlations with the soil temperatures without lags unlike the maximum air temperature, which is derived from its higher and longer auto-correlation and stronger spectrums of low frequencies than the maximum air temperature. The snow depth showed an inverse relationship with the soil temperature variations due to snow's low thermal conductivity and high albedo. Multiple regression for the soil temperatures using the air temperature and snow depth presented its predicting possibility of them even though the multiple r2 of the regression is not that much satisfactory (r2 = 0.35-0.64).

  • This study examines the response when the shock by underwater explosion is transmitted to a vertical launch air-vehicle mounted on a ship using modeling and simulation, and is about a plan to increase method shock resistance to protect the air vehicle. In order to obtain an accurate mathematical model, a dynamic characteristic test was performed on similar equipment, and through this, the mathematical model could be supplemented. And, using the supplemented mathematical model, the air vehicle simulated the shock response by the underwater explosion specified in the BV043 standard. As a result of the first simulation, it was confirmed that air vehicle could not withstand shock, and air vehicle protection method using a ring spring type shock absorber was studied. In addition to the basic shape of abosber, it was confirmed that the ring spring absober can be used to increase the impact resistance of a shipborn vertical launch vehicle by performing simulations for each case by changing deseign varables.
