This paper presents a mathematical model to predict the frost properties and heal and mass transfer within the frost layer formed on a cold plate. The laminar flow equations for the air-side are analyzed. and the empirical correlations of local frost properties are employed in order to predict the frost layer growth. The correlations of local frost density and effective thermal conductivity of frost layer, obtained from various experimental conditions, are derived as functions of various frosting parameters (Reynolds number, frost surface temperature, absolute humidity and temperature of moist air, cooling plate temperature, and frost density). The numerical results are compared with experimental data and the results of various models to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 10%. The heat and mass transfer coefficients obtained from the numerical analyses are presented, as the results, it is found that the model for frost growth using the correlation of heat transfer coefficient without solving air flow have a limitation in its application.
An experimental study on the performance evaluation of a brazed plate heat exchanger with 10USRT of normal cooling capacity has been carried out. In the present study, a brazed plate heat exchanger was tested at a chevron angle $25^{\circ}$with refrigerant R-22. Refrigerant mass flux was ranged from 23 to 58 kg/$m^2$s in condensation, and from 22 to 53 kg/$m^2$s in evaporation. The heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are increased as the mass flux increases. The water side pressure drop is increased as the cooling water flow rate and chilled water flow rate increase, while mass flux has little effect. It is also shown that the system performance can be improved by enlarging condensation heat transfer area.
In this study, the experiment of thermal performance about closed-type hybrid cooling tower was conducted. A closed type cooling tower is a device similar to a general cooling tower, but with cooling tower replaced by a heat exchanger. The test section for this experiment has the process that the cooling water flows from top part of heat exchanger to bottom side in the inner side of tube, and spray water flows gravitational direction in the outer side of it. Air contacts of tube outer side are counterflow. The heat transfer pipe used in this experiment is a bare type tube having an outside diameter of 15.88mm. In this experiment, heat performances of the cooling tower are calculated such as overall heat transfer coefficient of between the process fluid and air, cooing capacity and pressure drop.
The objective of this study Is to investigate the heat transfer performance of plate discrete fin-and-tube heat exchangers with large fin pitch. In this study, twenty-two heat exchangers were tested with a variation of fin pitch, number of tube row, longitudinal tube pitch and fin alignment. Discrete fin type exchangers improved heat transfer performance more than 10% compared to tile continuous fin type heat exchangers. The air-side heat transfer coefficient decreased with a reduction of the fin pitch and an increase of the number of tube row, The staggered fin alignment improved heat transfer performance more than 6% compared to the inline fin alignment. The effect of longitudinal tube pitch was insignificant on the j-factor and experiments found opposite effects on the j-factor with respect to fin alignment. Heat transfer correlations were developed from the measured data for flat plate discrete fin-and-tube heat exchangers with large fin pitch. The correlations yielded good predictions of the measured data with mean deviations of 1,4% and 0.3% for tire inline and staggered tube alignment, respectively.
The heat generated in an induction motor is mostly dissipated through the frame. The study on the heat transfer characteristics of a newly manufactured finless TEFC(Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled) induction motor showed/that it had an unsuitable structure in view of the heat transfer. The angle of the cooling air flow was very large and the ribs disturbed the air flow and partially generated the wake region on the frame. In the wake region the temperature was very high. Thus the heat transfer coefficients were lower than those of the frame with fins. Also was investigated the heat transfer characteristics of the motor frame by installing various guide vanes in the fan-side end cap. An optimum heat transfer case was found and the average heat transfer coefficient of the frame was 70% higher and the average coil temperature measured by the resistance method was 9 deg. C lower than that of the frame which had no guide vanes.
Evaporation heat transfer characteristics by pulsating flow in a plate heat exchanger have been investigated experimentally in this study. R-l34a is evaporated by receiving heat from the hot water in the plate heat exchanger. The pulsating frequency in refrigerant side of the plate heat exchanger is varied in the range of 5-25 Hz. The operating pressure of R-l34a and mass flux of hot water are also varied 0.6-0.9 MPa and $45-105 kg/m^2s$, respectively. The experimental results indicate that evaporation heat transfer coefficient of pulsating flow is improved up to 6.3% compared with that of the steady flow at 10 Hz and $G_w=45 kg/m^2s$. It is also found that the evaporation heat transfer enhancement ratio is decreased with an increase in mass flux of hot water, and the evaporation heat transfer enhancement is little influenced by operating pressure of R-l34a.
This study presents the air side heat transfer and friction characteristics of fin-tube heat exchangers with various fin types. A total of 8 samples of heat exchangers are tested. Fin patterns tested are slit, louver and plate fins. Each fin type has three cases of number of tube rows(N=1, 2, 3) and two different fin pitches. The results are plotted in terms of Colburn j-factor and friction factor f with respect to Reynolds number in the range of 200 to 510.
Heat transfer and pressure drop for ${\phi}10.07$ dry surface fin-tube heat exchanger with wave and wave-slit fins were measured for different fin spacings and number of tube rows. Longitudinal and transverse tube spacings of the heat exchangers are 21.65mm and 25mm respectively, and wave depth of wave fin is 1.5mm. The experiments were performed for 4 different fin spacings, 1.3, 1.5, 1.7 and 2.0mm, and the number of tube rows were 1,2 and 3 rows. The present results were compared with the previous results for the wave depth of 2mm. Also hydrophilic coated and bare fins were tested. Correlations for Colburn j-factor and friction factor were developed.
This paper reports the analysis of dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser. At first, there is an assumption that the superheated vapor flows into the condenser inlet. And in order to consider the effect of pressure change in the dynamic characteristics of the condenser the combined system of condenser and compressor was used. By using the equation of energy balance and the equation of mass balance, the basic equation for describing the dynamic characteristics of condenser can be derived. The transfer function for describing dynamic response of the condenser to flow rate change outlet can be obtained from using linearizations and Laplace transformations of the equation. From this transfer function, analytical investigation which affects the frequency responses of condenser has been made. Through this study, it became possible that the information about the dynamic characteristics of air-cooled condenser is offered. While the average heat transfer coefficient of the refrigerant side necessary for the theoretical calculation of the dynamic characteristics is given by calculation method for the tube length and pressure drop of air-cooled condenser.
